5 out of 5 stars CanoScan 8800F   October 30, 2008

This item is just what I've been looking for to scan to file the many slides and photos that I have accumulated over the years. It is a very good overall scanner and can be used for documents in addition to the photos. It worked right out of the box and I have had no problems with it at all. I do recommend this item to those who are looking for a good scanner.

5 out of 5 stars Canoscan 8800F is my fastest scanner ever.   October 28, 2008

This is my fourth scanner, the others having worn out after years of service. I bought it because of all the favorable reviews here, and am happy to add to the high rankings. This scanner was preceded by an Epson 1650 and that was preceded by two HPs. The main thing that is impressive about the Canonscan 8800F is the raw speed, at least twice as fast as any scanner I've ever used and that may be too conservative an estimate. I use it mainly in conjunction with an OCR program scanning documents for historical research.
The other thing I like about this scanner is its heft. It seems to be made mostly of metal and it doesn't slide around when bumped. The lid is also heavy, which makes it especially good for the large books I often have to scan.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to set up and use, great results!   October 28, 2008

I have used this scanner with color negatives and 35mm slides with good results. The scanner was easy to set up and use. I like the film holders and the holders for slides. Well worth the price!

5 out of 5 stars A good buy   October 22, 2008

My husband and I bought the CanoScan 8800F scanner for our daughter who is home-schooling three children and needs the scanner to make multiple copies of worksheets and pictures. She uses it on a daily basis. She loves it, it has worked exactly as she had hoped from the moment she set it up. She particularly likes the OCR software that comes with it, says it was a no-brainer to figure it out.

1 out of 5 stars Blurry and disappointed - has Canon lost its touch?   October 21, 2008

At this point, I am quite disappointed with Canon CanoScan film scanners.

First, I was sent a replacement 8800F scanner for my malfunctioning one by Canon. The replacement arrived unfit for use, with the scanner mechanism unlocked.

Then a second replacement was sent. I just completed running some test scans. Comparing the scan quality of the 8800F recently received with scans of the same colour positive films made only days before on my CanoScan 8400F before it malfunctioned, it is plainly evident that the CanoScan 8800F scans are inferior, especially in resolution. Blurry results were produced on the CanoScan 8800F even with the unsharp mask correction turned on. This is contrary to what one might expect from a product update.

Please see the slide discussion for sample scans.

The one star was for the speed of the scanner - it is fast. But at the end of the day, isn't quality what we really want?

I will be happy to go with another manufacturer.
