Great Scanner for Scanning Slides! August 27, 2008 J. Smith (Grafton, MA USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Purchased the Canon CanoScan 8800F Color Scanner last week to convert many, many boxes of slides. All I can say is WOW. Didn't expect to be this impressed. The unit does everything the manufacturer says it will do and does it with ease. My scans look just like the original slides; nothing was lost.
Great performance but room for improvement August 27, 2008 Dan Harel (Rochester, NY) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I purchased this product about a month ago primarily to scan hundreds of images currently in slide and print formats (using an Apple MacBookPro). My priorities were quality of outcome and overall user experience (including machine performance, ease of use and look & feel). For these priorities I was willing to compromise price and some capabilities or features (like those typically found in the all-in-one devices). I also compromised the number of slides per scan. I researched the market and compared devices and features, also ignored brand brainwash (from advertising or store clerks). Well, so far I am very satisfied with this purchase with one exception, the mechanical hinge that connects the document cover to the main body of the scanner wiggles (not tight enough) and I am worried this wiggle will worsen with time and use. This detail does not compromise the quality of the scanned images, it is just one of those annoying things that remind you that nothing is made perfect or to last forever. YOU CAN DO BETTER CANON, let your industrial design group oversee the entire user experience process including hinge design.
Home Run August 23, 2008 Randy Nottingham (Casper, Wyoming) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I had a dedicated film scanner that just crashed. I did not want to spend that kind of money again to digitize my last batch of 35mm slides, so I opted for the 8800F after seeing its high ratings over so many people. I downloaded all the software, but decided to use Photoshop CS3 downloading my slides. In Photoshop just click on File, Import, CanoScan 8800F, and it will pull up the 8800F ScanGear software hardware that comes with the unit. I did not really see much difference under magnification between 1200, 1600 or 2400 for my purposes (except it takes more time to scan as the resolution increases), so I set the output at 1200. I have everthing else in the advanced tab in ScanGear set to OFF, because I can better adjust things in Photoshop. I have an action recorded in Photoshop so that I can scan and save in three keystrokes; it could be done in one keystroke, but the ScanGear package requires two. All told, in less than four minutes I get four fairly good images, all for less than $200. Not a bad way to finish digitizing my slides. And the unit doubles as a document scanner, a plus over my dedicated film scanner. Good luck.
Great Scanner But WARNING!... August 21, 2008 Lord Slaygon 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Scanner is great. The reviews here are very accurate. However, be warned that many purchases I have made from Amazon direct (not their affiliates) has come with very little inner box padding or packing material. They shipped my scanner bouncing around inside a big box with no padding. It bounced around so much it tore 70% of the packing tape off the back of the outer box. Even if there is no visible damage to the scanner box (except the skuffs and small corner compressions) there is a very big danger of the scanner failing at any time due to the damage it may have sustained. Everytime I order an expensive or large item it arrives bouncing around inside a packing box with a ludicrous amount of padding that's 5% of what should be used. I am EXTREMELY disappointed at the fact that this continues to happen regardless of how many times I tell Amazon. This is the 3rd time. What is it going to take to insure that my purchases are packaged properly? I want the idiot(s) in shipping to get written up for this. Sorry, but what was supposed to be a very happy day getting my toy turned out to be another Amazon disappointment... I am going to cut/paste this into a review for every product I purchased that was improperly packaged.
I like it August 20, 2008 TomF (Nebraksa) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Works well. I purchased this because I had some 32 year old B&W negatives from high school I wanted to scan. I posted a couple of them. You can scan up to 12 negatives at a time. There is a preview mode with zoom allowing picture selection before a full scan takes place. I've been scanning at 2400 dpi. Each scan takes about 1-2 minutes. I've been using the enclosed software, Photostudio, in conjunction with Polaroid Dust and Scratch Removal. Using both programs I can remove most of the dust and water spots. One con with Photostudio is that when running it in the background, after each negative is scanned, it puts itself back on top. Very annoying. Additionally it has a tendency to lock up when it finishes all the scans and your doing something else like web surfing. The end result is a loss of the scanned images and requires a program restart. Overall I can recommend this based on my limited expertise.I posted a couple of them.
