HP Photosmart 7280 is a great value and suits my needs February 13, 2008 Patricia J. Thompson (Orlando, FL) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I was looking for an AIO printer that also did autoduplex and had a paper feed for faxing and scanning. Because this is for a small home business, I was first looking at Deskjets and Officejets but was steered to the Photosmart for the price and the features. It is not perfect but largely gets the job done. The software was a little problematic - took a long time to install and at the end of the install there was a problem so I had to reinstall manually. Seems to work o.k. though. The duplex printing is slow (the ink needs to dry before printing the other side) but I expected that and it doesn't bother me because I can keep working while it is printing. The printer makes a lot of fuss over each print job (a bit lengthy and "hummy" in the initialization and post-job mode) but it does a fine job of printing crisply and cleanly and the ink cartridges appear to last a long time. I have had two paper jam events with the duplexer - one probably because I had flimsy copy paper loaded, the other one was a false alarm (said there was a jam but I had not sent a job to be duplexed so I just reset and it was fine). The real paper jam was quite easy to dislodge. I have not printed any photos (not my thing) but I hear it is fantastic in this department. It faxes and scans multiple pages flawlessly, although I agree with another reviewer who wanted a choice for scans other than just jpeg - I need pdf, too. And yes, I would like the printer to go into a sleep mode to save energy. I just have to turn it off, which is a pain. But overall, I am happy with it as it performs the tasks I bought it for and so far so good. I could not find a better printer for the price and I was also very pleased with the footprint and low profile. Much smaller and sleeker than my previous Dell AIO and with a lot more features.
Hardware is good, but the software/drivers/support are abysmal February 10, 2008 J. Lewis (Somerville, MA USA) 24 out of 26 found this review helpful
I have had this printer for about 1 month now. My plans were to set it up on my local network, via ethernet, where I have one Windows PC and one Mac running. This all-in-one is very attractive for our setup because it allows us to have the printing and scanning functions networked and not attached to just one machine or the other. When I got it home, I first set it up on my Mac, which went very smoothly. I was happy to see from other reviews that the drivers for this printer run under OSX 10.5 Leopard, since I was replacing my old HP all-in-one because they have never updated their drivers to support 10.5. In the few weeks that I've been running the software on my Mac, I have only encountered one problem. It can do duplex printing (print on both sides), but it will print the back side up-side-down from how it's expected. I contacted HP about this and they said that it's a known issue with the OSX driver and to watch their website for updates. I'm happy with that response if they do actually make an update, but the latest drivers from there are from 11/07 so I'm not holding my breath. So far, you might wonder why these little problems warrant a one-star review. Well, the Windows installation was a whole different animal. From the first time I tried to install the software, the installer would get about 90% of the way through and then give me "Error 1933", the sight of which would get my blood boiling for the next couple weeks. I went back and forth with HP's support about five different times before they pointed me to a solution that worked to complete the installation. Some of these rounds included following 8 PRINTED PAGES OF DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS for downloading HP tools and Windows components, fiddling with the registry, and restarting 4 or 5 times. After going back and forth for two weeks, HP support finally pointed me to a solution that had "Error 1933" in the title of the support article! I have no idea why it took them so long to point me to a solution that was directly related to my problem. Even then, the article described files that were not on my installation CD, so I had to poke through all of the supplied .cab files to find one that matched the fixes that were described. Despite my frustration, I was happy to finally be able to install the software. Printing and scanning worked fine on my PC for one pass, and the problems popped up again. I was able to scan to my PC once, and now the scanning tool hangs up every time I try to open it. HP's latest suggestion was to uninstall the software and reinstall it. Despite my boiling blood, I gave it one more try. Again, I was able to scan once before the software hangs up any time I try to open it. I'm about to give up and return this printer/scanner/copier and buy the Canon MX700, which is supposed to be able to do everything that this one can except for the duplex printing. Of course, as I mentioned above, even that is broken on my Mac. I stand behind just giving this one star, even though I really like the hardware features - ethernet and wi-fi interface, duplex printing sleek looks, automatic document feeder. The software unfortunately had made the hardware useless, so until HP can improve their software and support (which I have been happy with in the past), I am going to have to look elsewhere for my all-in-one needs.
Quick and easy set up on mac using wireless.... February 9, 2008 B. Caruso (SW Florida, USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
So far so fabulous.... Set up was quick... Bought this locally (officemax...I had a coupon and I wanted the option of returning it if I just couldn't connect for some reason using the wireless networking)... I had read the reviews here and elsewhere and downloaded the driver update from [...] for mac 10.5.1 before I installed the driver cd that came with the printer... Installed that and then installed the driver update immediately... From the general print menu I had to add the printer as the installer only added it as a fax and it wouldn't print that way... Nice and easy, quick printing, nice quality.... Was debating between this and the officejet that had similar features but wound up with this one.... I'm using it as a general printer and for the occasional photos and probably lots of scanning.... I just started using it but setup was a lot less daunting than I imagined... The printer's onboard network setup feature detected my network (and my neighbor's!) right away... Good stuff....
HP C7280 Printer February 8, 2008 Mr. Alex Morrell (Omaha, NE) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Overall a pretty good printer. Physically larger than I expected. Scanning of documents seems a bit slow. I have Vonage phone service and have not found a way to hook up the fax, yet. Printing is fairly quick and printing of photos is also.
Not for Leopard Users Ye February 7, 2008 David Schneider (Mentor, OH) 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
HP has taken down the 10.5 drivers it had posted for this printer on the web, claiming they were buggy, and has not posted anything in their place. So, since the disk that comes with the machine only goes to 10.4, Leopard users will find this printer does not work as well as should be expected. After a long wait, I was told by HP Tech Support today (2/7) that the drivers might be ready for release by March, presumably this year.
