Eats ink like it's going out of style. June 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have had this printer for 6 months and have been thoroughly disappointed by it. We had an older model HP that gave up the ghost, but it was a terrific all-in-one machine. Part of the problem could be that we have an older computer. About every 2 weeks, I have a document that won't print--I can't cancel it either. It just remains in limbo, whereby I have to turn the computer off. Then to use it again, I have to insert the original CD in the drive and reinstall the software. As my title suggests, this new technology where you only have to purchase the ink cartridges you need is for the birds. You go through far more ink that you used to (I'm sure that's the reason for the "new technology"). Anyway, I really don't like this printer.
expensive ink, buggy software, questionable tactics, poor support June 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
VERY buggy drivers. VERY expensive yet low-yield ink cartridges. Misleading marketing tactics (photo value pack does not state how much ink is in each cartridge, yet they have less ink than normal). Very poor support.
Don't take my word for it. Search around the net. People are literally selling their HP all-in-ones because of the higher than expected usage and cost of the ink.
Don't buy for scanner! June 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We were in search of a scanner with Automatic Document Feed to replace a 3 year old Dell All in One. We purchased the HP C7280 at Staples because we wanted it immediately. We assumed the printer and fax functions would be fine because of HPs reputation. We did not expect so many problems from the scanner. In no order, beware: 1. LARGE FILE SIZES - With Paperport 10 software still in our computer, a single page PDF document at 150 dpi resolution is about 15k of memory. No matter how poorly we set the HP resolution or adjusted any setting, we could not get a page below 425k. Imagine e-mailing a 4Meg 10 page document. 2. SLOW START EVERY TIME - I'm used to hitting the Scan button and seeing the machine begin scanning right away. The HP has a 20 second delay before it even starts pulling the page. At EVERY new scan job. 3. INCOMPLETE SCANS - On a normal scanner, if you scan an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper that has text on only the top half of the page, when you view the image you see the entire page even if the bottom half is just white. The HP software tries to save just the text portion. I could live with this if it worked. Over 50 % of the items I scanned completely ignored - missed some or most of the writing on a page which made the scan COMPLETELY unusable. 4. NO REAL USER SETUP OPTIONS - Try to go through every option of every screen of the scanner setup menus or the all-in-one setup menus to correct these problems and be frustrated at how little of significance you can control.
HP would be better marketing this as a printer - copier - fax and leaving the scanner off. From my research, apparently good scanning software is an industry wide problem.
Hardware very good, Software very poor June 12, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased the C7280 to replaace an aging Epson scanner and a HP printer. I was always happy with the printer but as all things do it wore out. I am pleased with the hardware of the all-in-one, in fact I seemed to be excellent. However, the software downloaded off the internet from HP's site, Solution Center V10.0 was a disaster on my XP machine. Not only did several functions work very poorly (for instance, after scanning a document from the Solution Center and completing the operation the only way to scan another document is to close the Solution Center and reopen it because the Scan buttons are grayed out) but the worst thing was that with the HP Photosmart software installed on the machine it prevented me from being able to install some but not all unrelated products on my machine such as Photoshop Essentials 2.0.
I had a professional IT person spend 8+ hours trying to solve the install Photoshop program with no success. The next day I decided to return the HP C7280 to Amazon, uninstalled the Solution Center software and low and behold the Photoshop sovtware and an old copy of Clarisworks that also would not install now installed without a hitch.
I conclusion HP has done a diservice to it's customers by letting such imature software out of the house.
PS. I also have a Vista machine and did not seem to have the installation of Photoshop problems on it.
great value June 11, 2008 Great overall printer, handles everything with ease. while some have complained about the noise of the copier and scanner, I find that while certainly louder than the printer, the noise level is not objectionable. like the no computer copying and faxing. print quality is excellent, printer speed is good, photo prints are excellent and fast. overall a great all in one printer.
