3 out of 5 stars Nice but not great   February 9, 2008

I purchased the 4070cdw for use in a church. It seemed most people were happy with it. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them. After unpacking and setting up, I printed some built-in demo pages. I noticed some magenta spots on the page. It turned out to be a leaky magenta cartridge. A call to Brother got another toner cartridge on its way. A new cartridge fixed the problem so I took it to the church for them to try out.

They weren't impressed. The colors on the demo page looked real good, but printing those same colors from a PC and Mac were dull. The photos all had a yellow tint to them. I tried everything that was advised on the Brother web site to fix the colors. No improvement. I used both drivers hoping at least one of them would produce the "bright vivid colors" that were advertised. I changed color settings trying to find the right combination. I finally gave up.

The built-in demos look great, but printing something from the computer is a different story. I wonder if they are poorly written drivers.

Fortunately, I purchased the printer at a local OfficeMax store with a 14-day return policy. After 12 days and a lot of time and paper, it went back to the store and they were very nice about taking it.

I don't know if we had a lemon, but I really doubt it. I think people have different expectations on what a color laser printer can do.

4 out of 5 stars Delivers as promised   February 8, 2008

Setup was a breeze. Had it working on my wireless network within half an hour. Print speed and quality is excellent. Curly paper issue is common in all non-industrial laser printers.

5 out of 5 stars Solid printer, easy installation   February 8, 2008

I bought this printer after my previous color laser (Minolta) konked out after 4 years of duty. I figured it would cost just as much to purchase this new printer as it would be to refurbish/repair the old one, and I get a much faster printer (20ppm vs 4 ppm - color).

Everything has worked great on the Brother printer. Setup in the office was simple and it is now networked to all the workstations (both Mac and PC). Speed is great, but color is not as fast as black (though they're supposed to be the same speed). Haven't printed any images/photos, it's used mainly for documents, but no complaints so far.

5 out of 5 stars Advanced Color Settings and Great Customer Service !!!   January 30, 2008

I just got my HL-4070CDW today & I'm in love with it already. The reason I'm writing is that I almost did NOT buy this printer because of the reviews that claim the colors are not adequate. I'm glad I made the purchase !!! Although I did not purchase this printer for color photos (my application is home business letters with color letterhead), I just HAD to test the colors when I received this printer.

I'm not trying to get into a debate with anyone who has felt they experienced less vivid colors - but I wonder if they used the advanced settings that are available. The first thing I did when I was up and running was to explore the ADVANCED settings for the VIVID COLOR option. These settings are GREAT !!! I was able to set the Contrast, Brightness, Red, Green, Blue, and Color Saturation for my print job. Each of these settings provides an adjustment of PLUS (+) or MINUS (-) 20%, along with a color preview window so you can see the effect of your settings. I carefully set-up one of my favorite photos, using quality laser photo paper, and the result was an outstanding match with a professional print that I had for the same photo.

I next decided to try printing black & white photos which are an important part of my home decor. Using the Fine setting under the advanced options I was truly amazed - at what I could do with this printer. Each result was absolutely suitable for framing!!! Although my application is business correspondence, this printer will quickly pay for itself when I compare the cost of professional photo finishing for my black & whites to the cost of a high yield black toner cartridge. I often pay the cost of a high yield cartridge just to get a group of 5x7 and 8x10 black & white photos printed to add to my decor.

I LOVE IT !!! I'm only a digital photo hobbyist and would have been happy continuing to pay for professional processing of my black & whites (or even my color photos), but I am very happy with this printer. The ONLY REASON I'm writing this review is that I ALMOST DID NOT purchase this printer because of the reviews about the "less than vivid" colors. I am very happy to have the perfect printer for my home business application PLUS the added extra bonus of saving money on photo processing - I will be adding to my home gallery (my walls) and will be changing out photos regularly in my home decor.

One final note: I am NOT a computer expert - I'm probably an average user at best. I ran into a tiny snag (lack of user understanding) when doing the WiFi set-up. (I wanted this so I could do all my work on my laptop sitting in my "easy chair" and to be able to print to the printer from anywhere in my home or on my patio using WiFi.) Anyway, the snag was my lack of knowledge with setings so I called Brother right away within 15 minutes after getting this out of the box. They were FANSTASTIC !!!!! I cannot believe how much time they spent walking me through the wireless settings (me - a non-techie), they were patient, easy to understand, pleasant to talk to and extremely helpful. So this is another reason I just HAD to write this review - to tell everyone, if they are non-technical like me and want to set this up wirelessly - and need help - Brother is there for you - that's a great feeling that I have someone I can call for help - at no cost - and receive outstanding service with a smile !!!!

I highly recommend this printer if you consider your application. It's possible some of the negative reviews I read may have been someone who did not properly match their application to the specs for this printer & someone who possibly may not have tried the advanced color settings.

I don't write many reviews, but I wanted to post my feelings about this printer. I've always wanted a color laser, but couldn't justify several hundred or even thousands that color lasers used to cost. My mom was in the market for a color printer, so I took the time to read some thoughts on color lasers. I had no idea they had gotten as affordable as I picked this printer up. I'm glad I checked. The price has gone up, and mom isn't getting this one :)

Personally, I didn't "NEED" a wireless printer, but it would make it easier to hook up. Having a network connection means I can hook it up to my router and ANYONE I've allowed to connect to my network can print. With a USB connection, like my mono laser, my computer has to be on in order for any other computer to print. Being wireless means I didn't have to run another cat5 cable in my wall for a network connection. Being wireless is one of the biggest features of the printer, and I didn't see many printers with that feature in this price range. I had very little trouble figuring out how to input my router information and password into the printer...5 stars for the connections!

As far as print quality, I haven't used other color lasers so I'm flying kind of blind. Color graphs and text look great. It prints black text and graphics a good bit better than the Brother 1440 it replaced. On color photos, it's no where near good enough to compete with a photo lab (as expected). Also, the paper comes out curled. It's not major, but I wouldn't run a printing company with it. It would knock the socks off most anyone else...4 stars for print quality

The printer is decently loud while printing. At rest, it's silent. Standby is quiet enough to only be a very slight distraction. The first page is slow to print when coming out of rest mode, but reasonably quick if the printer is in standby. Prints come out fast once the printer is printing. I don't know about power consumption, but my lights don't flicker when warming up like some lasers have done. No problems there...4 stars for operation.

The printer is a beast in size and weight. Be sure you have the space and stand to support it. The consumables are reasonable compared to other brands, but it's still expensive when you have to replace them. It's a good thing it comes with standard toner packs instead of starter packs like other brands include. The printer even has built in Duplexing that works really well, but does slow down output. For what you get, the price is amazing...5 stars for value

Overall, unless you need the best quality output (million dollar business clients, photo printing, etc.), this printer will easily suffice. It's connections make it ideal for hooking up to as a single computer's printer or on a network. Those things mated with it's speed and duplexing means this printer will do anything most small businesses would need. I can't overstate what a value it can be. I've seen a large price swing at Amazon, but I bought it very cheaply and super saving shipping was free.

I gave the printer 4 stars total. It's almost 5 stars, but there is room for improvement on print quality (paper curling, color accuracy for photos, etc). For the price I paid for it, I could give it 5 stars, but it's over 100 bucks more now. If you don't need the wireless connection (I HIGHLY recommend it), you can get the 4040cn which is cheaper. I think it lacks duplexing also.

Oh, and don't worry about mom. We've decided she needs a multifunction instead of just a printer.
