A very good printer February 14, 2008 G. Shamma (Columbus, OH USA) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
We had a deal going on at one of the local stores here that was offering a free printer (after rebate) with the purchase of a PC. I chose this one, and have been using it for about 2 months now. Pros: It's the fastest printer I've seen till now. I've had an old Compaq printer for years which was quite slow - therefore, I am comparing it to that. Works perfectly with XP and Vista. You can fold up the part where the paper exits when you're not using the printer. This definitely saves up space, and reduces a little bit of dust accumulation. Cons: Never seen or heard a louder printer than this one. I usually don't print when someone is asleep, since we have a small apartment. I don't print a lot, and so I still haven't ran out of ink yet. However, reading reviews from users who have purchased ink from Amazon, it looks like it uses a lot of ink. Not only that, but from the prices I have been looking at, its ink is REALLY expensive. Honestly, if I had to actually "pay" for this printer, I would not buy it. Yes, I haven't had one "real" negative experience from it, other than the fact that it's extremely loud; however, as of now, it is going for $89.99 on Amazon - maybe I would reconsider if it was $50.00. With its current price, I just don't think it is worth it. Best of luck with your decision.
Worked once....replacement on the way February 6, 2008 A. Downes (Harpswell, ME) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I just got off the phone with Epson. I used my printer one time to print some large photos on glossy photo paper. It did fine. No problems whatsoever. Then two days later, I put plain paper in the printer, selected "Text", and I never got anywhere. The printer software kept telling me that the cover was open, but it wasn't. I kept trying to resend the print job, turn the printer on/off, etc. After several power on/off attempts, I then called Epson where I was told to hold down the first and third buttons. When all 3 buttons (1 green, 2 red) started flashing, he told me that I had a hardware problem, and I would receive a replacement printer (not necessarily new) within 5 to 7 days via FedEx. I do not need to return this printer. I will update this review when I receive and try out the new printer, but for now I am giving it a neutral 3 stars because the Epson rep was so responsive. I was not told to return it to the place of purchase (not Amazon). I purchased this printer because I was eligible for a rebate of the entire purchase price. I did not seek out this printer because of any product features. I am writing this review for those of you who are considering purchasing this printer for any specific reasons. Hopefully you won't have the hassle of having to contact Epson and be without a printer for a week. In the event it doesn't work and you are willing to contact Epson, however, hopefully you will speak with a helpful rep like I did.
Good enough for cheap 'photo' printer January 29, 2008 rprice54 (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The main reason I bought this was because it was free with a rebate when I purchased a camera. I chose this epson model (it was an epson rebate) mainly because of the 'photo' features and CD/DVD printing. I didn't need a scanner because I already have an all-in-one. First off, this thing is HUGE, bigger than my AIO with a scanner bed. Print on CD/DVD is amazing. No complaints. The software is a little simple, it doesn't give you a ton of options, you can't even resize and image and keep it's aspect ratio constant, but the print job looks very professional. I've only tried Memorex DVDs so far, but very happy. Photos are good. The best injet I've used so far. Some prior photo printers I've used have been a Dell 922(terrible), HP run of the mill deskjet (good) and an older HP photojet. This printer, despite all it's "High Definition" claims has a real hard time with hair. We printed some passport photos, my wife has long hair, and the end result ends up pixelated, not sure why. Other fine details come out great. I think it's a software problem and the driver just doesn't handle hair well. I tried the same pics with the same software on the same paper and compared my Dell "photo" 922s with this one. the dell had better detail and resolution when it came to the hair, but otherwise the epson had better colors, depth, sharpness, and it does a pretty good job with skin tones as well. It's still no photo lab though, and ink is pricey. Still cheaper and better to take it to a store when you're printing a bunch at once. But for the occasional need for photos at home it works well.
Very impressed, esp. with the disc-printing feature January 9, 2008 AA 18 out of 20 found this review helpful
I'm a loyal HP user for lasers, but have had trouble with my inkjets from them in the past. Since I've had good luck with my Epson scanner, I gave the R280 a shot and have been very impressed with it. There were some errors in the original setup, causing the printer to freeze during ink charging, but these vanished as mysteriously as they appeared and the printer has been working like a dream ever since. The CD printing is beautiful (FYI: CDs are supposed to be given 24 hours to dry) and a great feature to have. I love the way that the printer also completely folds up, which keeps out dust and minimizes desk space. The printer is also offered at a great price and I was even able to get it with a rebate (no longer available) that will literally reimburse me for the cost of the printer, if it comes through. Epson, you might have won a convert!
Purchased Lemon like first Reviewer "Unsatisfied" December 27, 2007 Shawn T. (Seattle, WA USA) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
I purchased this printer for Christmas (for my Wife). Same two orange/red lights were blinking as Unsatisfied's printer. I called Epson and they are sending out a new R280 as I purchased it over 30 days ago (actually the printer was included free in a Canon SD870-IS Camera Bundle). Epson's Representative stated we should receive the new printer in 4-7 days. I will update this Review/Post after. Epson's Representative also stated to 'keep' the defective R280, no need to send it back (didn't even have to email/fax/send the invoice). WOW! I love this Service so far. Hopefully, the new printer will come with its own ink supply so we will have two complete ink sets for our 'trouble'... :) Now, what to do with the 'defective' printer... ;} I gave 3 stars though I have not been able to actually use this model. Epson's support warrants 5 stars (if we do indeed get another R280 within 7 days).
