4 out of 5 stars Good enough for cheap 'photo' printer   January 29, 2008

The main reason I bought this was because it was free with a rebate when I purchased a camera. I chose this epson model (it was an epson rebate) mainly because of the 'photo' features and CD/DVD printing. I didn't need a scanner because I already have an all-in-one. First off, this thing is HUGE, bigger than my AIO with a scanner bed. Print on CD/DVD is amazing. No complaints. The software is a little simple, it doesn't give you a ton of options, you can't even resize and image and keep it's aspect ratio constant, but the print job looks very professional. I've only tried Memorex DVDs so far, but very happy. Photos are good. The best injet I've used so far. Some prior photo printers I've used have been a Dell 922(terrible), HP run of the mill deskjet (good) and an older HP photojet. This printer, despite all it's "High Definition" claims has a real hard time with hair. We printed some passport photos, my wife has long hair, and the end result ends up pixelated, not sure why. Other fine details come out great. I think it's a software problem and the driver just doesn't handle hair well. I tried the same pics with the same software on the same paper and compared my Dell "photo" 922s with this one. the dell had better detail and resolution when it came to the hair, but otherwise the epson had better colors, depth, sharpness, and it does a pretty good job with skin tones as well. It's still no photo lab though, and ink is pricey. Still cheaper and better to take it to a store when you're printing a bunch at once. But for the occasional need for photos at home it works well.

5 out of 5 stars Very impressed, esp. with the disc-printing feature   January 9, 2008

I'm a loyal HP user for lasers, but have had trouble with my inkjets from them in the past. Since I've had good luck with my Epson scanner, I gave the R280 a shot and have been very impressed with it. There were some errors in the original setup, causing the printer to freeze during ink charging, but these vanished as mysteriously as they appeared and the printer has been working like a dream ever since. The CD printing is beautiful (FYI: CDs are supposed to be given 24 hours to dry) and a great feature to have. I love the way that the printer also completely folds up, which keeps out dust and minimizes desk space. The printer is also offered at a great price and I was even able to get it with a rebate (no longer available) that will literally reimburse me for the cost of the printer, if it comes through. Epson, you might have won a convert!

3 out of 5 stars Purchased Lemon like first Reviewer "Unsatisfied"   December 27, 2007

I purchased this printer for Christmas (for my Wife). Same two orange/red lights were blinking as Unsatisfied's printer. I called Epson and they are sending out a new R280 as I purchased it over 30 days ago (actually the printer was included free in a Canon SD870-IS Camera Bundle). Epson's Representative stated we should receive the new printer in 4-7 days.

I will update this Review/Post after.

Epson's Representative also stated to 'keep' the defective R280, no need to send it back (didn't even have to email/fax/send the invoice). WOW! I love this Service so far. Hopefully, the new printer will come with its own ink supply so we will have two complete ink sets for our 'trouble'... :)

Now, what to do with the 'defective' printer... ;}

I gave 3 stars though I have not been able to actually use this model. Epson's support warrants 5 stars (if we do indeed get another R280 within 7 days).

2 out of 5 stars Epson Stylus Photo R280   December 15, 2007

I bought the Epson Stylus R280 to supplement my older C88.

Positively:
1. It prints a lot faster, including on hi quality color mode.
2. It does a good job on CDs.
3. The 200-sheet paper tray is really handy.
4. Paper feed is superior to the C88. No jams so far.
5. It fed easily both 32 Pd paper and a 150 Pd card stock with no problems. But then, the old C88 did that too.

Negatively:

1. The initial paper feed is REALLY noisy. It doesn't just feed the paper, it slams it in, and with a clatter so strong it rocks the desk on which it sits. This is very annoying in a small office.
2. The B&W print quality isn't really much better than the old C88. Even using a magnifying glass, I couldn't see much improvement.
3. The color printing is better than the C88 but not so much as to be worth the price.

In my opinion, the only thing I got for my money different from what I already had was the ability to print CDs for my work. But when I offset that with putting up with the clatter, then I wonder if I would have been better off just using an old CD stomper.

It is a pretty cheap machine in every sense of the word. I would recommend spending a bit more on something better because as cheap as it was, it was not worth the price.
