Great Compact Olympus Digital Recorder June 14, 2008 This VN-4100PC is my first digital recorder. It's of compact size, which fits easily in my (small female) hand. (No strap is provided, but there are holes to thread a strap.) It's very simple to use. I used the recorder to tape lectures, conversations and notes to myself. At a workshop, I sat towards the back of a hotel conference room and the recorder captured the speaker's voice from the ceiling speakers (about 12 feet overhead). The recordings were clear and audible. There are four folders, which I use to designate for different recording sessions, i.e., Folder A for "To Do" or notes to myself. What I like most is the ability to download the recordings to a PC. This is a good buy for the price and usage.
Good if you use the high quality setting June 11, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I used this mainly for my singing class. It works well and captures all the notes during singing (with piano accompaniment), but only if I use the highest quality setting and the high mic setting.
The lower settings are crappy, however. The recording is all garbled and the sound cracks a lot, I couldn't even tell what the speaker was saying/singing.
I tried using it for normal lecture too, but that didn't work so well, even under high setting. But it could be because my teacher was soft-spoken (or maybe it's because we're scattered all over the classroom).
The software works fine with Vista, too. The only downside is you can't choose which files to upload to your computer. It will upload everything on the folder you've chosen, even if you've uploaded that file before. And uploading takes a long time.
Not if you have a Macintosh June 10, 2008 The quality of the recorder is fair, but not great. Transfer speed/quality is okay. Will not recognize Mac OS 10, so I have to switch my Mac to Windows mode, download the files and then switch back. The Mac has no problem playing the downloaded files.
Great little recorder June 9, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Nice product. I had to record some tapes onto an electronic format and the sound quality was excellent. The battery life is also very good and it takes 2 AAA batteries which allows for long recording times. It is quite simple to use and download to the computer as well.
Capture sound and keep it in your pocket. June 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Olympus VN-4100PC Digital Anything-That-Makes-Noise Recorder was a fantastic buy for yours-truly. It records clearly and crisply, and has more settings than you'd ever really need to optimize sounds for any occasion (Set to mic sensitivity to Low for loud areas, Hi for quiet). It has 4 digital folders that you can switch on the fly for storing info on different subjects. Easy operation, large speaker for playback away from your PC as well as Headphone and Mic jacks for private listening and stealthy recording. Available lanyard attachment and nifty pouch make it even more portable. Overall I give it Seven thumbs up (out of a possible seven).
