4 out of 5 stars Good value for the price   June 4, 2008

I bought this scanner to convert old family photos to images. It does a really nice job for an under $100 product. In particular the automatic restoring of faded color and B/W photos is a huge time saver for me. Many of y old photos are faded, and this scanner restores color and contrast without any work on my part. It also crops the scan area for me, so all I have to do it load the photo and click twice (preview and scan). The only negative I noted, is that the image restoration is either on or off. The preview mode lets me see the effect of the image restoration, and turn it on of off for the image capture scan. On a few photos, I noted that turning the image restoration on goes too far... it saturates the color too much or increases the contrast too much for the photo. In these cases, I have to capture without restoration, and use Photoshop Elements to tune the image manually. It would have been great if Canon had provided a slider for the image restoration, so that I could apply as much as I needed for a photo... For most of my scans, this has not been a problem. I scanned a few new photos "as is", and 98% of my old photos with restoration, and without any further manual tuning in Elements. If you want to digitize your shoe box of photos, this is an inexpensive answer.

4 out of 5 stars Canon Scanner   June 3, 2008

Good scanner with excellent resolution. Software is not "user friendly"; too complex. Top of unit is curved and if desk space is an issue, it wont support any thing on top of the unit. Negative and slide scanning a plus.

5 out of 5 stars A great little scanner!   June 1, 2008

What directed me to this scanner were some good reviews and the fact that it will scan photos, text, and slides. I was looking for a way to begin digitizing old photos and slides (for family archiving); this scanner, along with its included software work great in partnership with my Mac. It is easy to set up and use. Those old photos and slides look better than ever with editing capabilities in the program. It will do 4 slides at a time and multiple photos in one scan, (even old negatives) with adjustable lid for thicker materials. Only drawback I found was no power switch(it goes into a sleep mode to save power), but since I don't use it daily, a simply plug-in switch at the hardware store solved this. Nice size, style at a reasonable price for what it does!

2 out of 5 stars Vista Compatible? I think NOT   May 30, 2008

I got this product based on the reviews and the notation that it was Vista compatible.

Help for the product is NOT included or supported by Windows Vista. When you go to the online Vista page (non geeks or 12 year olds beware!) nothing listed will download, all are incompatible with my year old Dell with Vista scr**ing with its programs.

So the question is, "Is it the hardware or the software?"

Well, next time I go to Mac.

5 out of 5 stars Great Scanner   May 29, 2008

This scanner is faster, quieter, sharper, and more reliable than any other I have ever owned or used. It was fairly inexpensive, too. Works great with my mac, and renders colors as true to life as I have seen from a low cost scanner. Reproduced a large format photo almost so well that I can't tell the difference from the original. The ONLY thing I would gripe about is endemic to all flatbed scanners: Why won't they make the lid about 1/2" smaller than the body, so you can hold a sheet down with your fingers when you close the lid? It makes it SO MUCH EASIER to keep the paper straight, when it is larger than the scanner. As this is common to all scanners, no stars deducted. Other than that...perfect scanner.
