1 out of 5 stars No one supports this phone :(   October 1, 2008
Beck Business Solutions Beck
I set this phone up and was able to make and receive calls except that the micropone would not pick up what I was saying. It was not on mute, silenced, or on speaker. I called netgear about it and they barely knew it existed. Skype said they did not support the hardware. I returned it.

It's a great idea but worthless if it won't work.

1 out of 5 stars Bad WiFi reception   September 30, 2008

1. Even the manual eludes to the fact that unless you are in direct line of sight and within 50ft of your router, you wont get enough signal to make a call.
2. It uses WEP key encryption, so unless you REALLY know how to setup router encryption dont try setting this up on your own. I prefer MAC filtering, but have to switch it off to use this phone in the house as the manual doesnt mention where to get the MAC ID from and it requests the passphrase (a bizarre term for your WEP key).
3. The unit requires a special headset, none of the headsets in my house work with it. the manual doesnt tell you what you need, I worked this out from other reviewers. The unit is very small and gets very hot, so you have to use a headset. Other reviewers have said that the unit is badly made and doesnt work with headsets at all.
4. The helpdesk is in India and is worse than useless. I will never but Netgear again after that experience.
5. Battery life is really bad and it takes forever to switch on and off.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic WiFi Phone   September 18, 2008
Larry Ahlers (Eureka Springs, AR USA)
I have had this phone for about 2 hours now and I think it's great! I put in the battery, powered it up,connected to my wireless network (entering the password was easy) and was making phone calls in 5 minutes. I already had a skype account so this made it a lot easier to get going. Sound quality seems great and connection time is fast. I have not read the "book" yet, that is how easy it is to set this phone up. I was also able to connect to a local hotel nonsecured WiFi network with no problems. Another great NETGEAR Product!!!

1 out of 5 stars Terrible!   September 4, 2008
Gabriel M. Chavez (Las Vegas NV)
I bought this phone in hopes all the other reviews on this page were wrong, however this phone is just cheesy! It is terrible sound quality and is made very poorly, I was expecting something more well put together, I decided to send it back! Also you cant chat like Text other skype users, kind of disappointed in that.

1 out of 5 stars Great Concept, Poor Execution   September 2, 2008
Hazwaste (Texas)
The concept of a WIFI phone that has a Skype client was appealing to me, especially since I've eliminated my land line at home. But even on my home WIFI with a 6MBPS DSL connection, with a pegged-out WIFI signal, the audio quality on both my end and the other end were HORRIBLE! It was much worse than using my mobile phone. Specifically, both received and sent sounds were broken up or garbled. I tested it with seven different callers, including land lines and mobile. At no point was the voice quality what I would consider even useable.

Oh, and the battery would heat up during calls, to the degree of being nearly painful.

We had purchased two of these phones as test units with the thought that they might offer an alternative to expensive overseas mobile calls when our executives travel, but our experience with them was so poor that we returned them to Amazon. Truly a poorly executed product in its current form. I'm hoping that Netgear or some other company can produce a viable WIFI Skype phone in the future, but based upon the lack of new products in this arena, I'm not counting on it since this generation of WIFI phones have been around for more than a year.

Better luck next time.
