Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
An additional handset that is designed for the i5858 and i5871 5.8 GHz Phone System / Full Color Display / 802.11 Friendly / Belt Clip

Amazon.com
The I5808 is an accessory handset requiring the I5871 base system for operation. You don't need a phone jack for this handset—just an electrical outlet to plug into. You can transfer calls and use the intercom function between phones to aid communications. The large lighted handset display with graphics allows for easy navigation of phone's features using the icon driven menu. You can also personalize your phone's display using any of the preset wallpaper images, or have fun with picture caller ID that associates caller ID information with preset images when your friends or family call you. Both the handset and base display the name and number of the last 100 callers. (Caller ID services require subscription through your provider.) 5.8 GHz technology offers you the best available performance when it comes to clarity and security. To be on the 5.8 GHz wavelength means you're on a much less trafficked area of the bandwidth than both the 2.4 GHz and 900 MHz products occupy. The handset includes a standard headset jack for hands-free operation, and easy to use volume controls so you can adjust the level to your preference. VTech includes a one-year warranty covering parts and service. What's in the Box: Handset, charger, charger adapter, belt clip, battery, audio patch cable, USB cable, VTech phonebook manager CD, user's manual, quick start guide, special features guide, warranty card

1 out of 5 stars Dismal tech support and worse reception...   October 3, 2008
casadomi (DC, USA)
I bought four of the Vtech phones. The reception is very poor to none existent in certain parts of the house and two of the phones all together stopped working after ten months. The phone's features sound great on the box, but I was never able to program the phones because of a variety of system incompatibilities. I have emailed tech-support several times and have received no response. Bottom line: they look great but do not work; I like form but need function so have given up on Vtech and am looking for new phones.

3 out of 5 stars nice looking, but!   September 23, 2008
KODG MAN (CLEVELAND, OH USA)
battery life is very poor/replacement batteries from v-tech are only about $6 w/shiipping. customer service is pretty poor. all five phones died in less than a year batteries fixed that but, the phones lost a vast majority of their usable distance! v-tech solution was to give me 15% off a new phone system! hum! phones died in less than a year & know i should by another one of your phone systems w/a whopping 15% off! don't think so. phones also fall of the base from a small breeze. look else where!

1 out of 5 stars Battery and charger are junk.   July 24, 2008
DaRealDeal (Brooklyn, NY United States)
I bought this accessory handset in April 2007 for $75.
BTW I never use this handset it just sits there.
The battery doesn't hold a charge anymore. Probably been a problem a few months ago, but I don't know, like I said I never use it.
The charger is rated at 9vDC 200mA according to the label,
but when I measure the voltage with my voltmeter I get 16vDC,
so I guess it's been
overcharging the handset this whole time.
My base output voltage to the main handset is only 7vDC.
And it is still going strong.
I called vtech they would not honor my warranty since it's only good for 1 year and now it is July.
The lady from India, still wanted to help me troubleshoot the phone, but I already told her the problem, it's like talking to a wall with the Indian Technical Support/Customer Service. I switched batteries with the base cordless and it started working while the other phone now had the problem. (no signal to base unit)
I ordered a new charger and battery.
I will never buy another Vtech product and I hope you do the same.
Vtech does not stand behind their products, even when it's surely a manufacture defect.

Update 8.19.08
Got the new charger and battery. Some time ago. They sent me a cradle instead of the actually ac/dc adapter charger at first.
Battery fixed the problem like I figured, but what's strange is when I check the charger output to the battery it is about 14Vdc, still too high in my opinion, when compared to the base unit output which is 7Vdc, I don't know why they make it this way, I guess to damage your battery and then for you to have to buy more batteries etc, BTW the price of the battery is $5.50 or something and $5 shipping (airmail) from Vtech (India) still not too high compared to other retailers.

Like I said don't buy this phone I have it now so I'm stuck, but I would buy 900Mhz phone with some type of scrambling security If that was possible, since the 5.8Ghz are so limited in range.

The vTech i5871 has been featured in the movie 'When a Stranger Calls' and on a few prime-time shows namely, 'Brothers and Sisters'. Unfortunately the phone is horrible!

Errors messages include the following "unable to connect", "searching for base".

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT   January 9, 2008
KELLIE OBOYLE (Sunrise, FL)
I bought this as a gift for my Mother because I have the same phone & LOVE IT!!! It was such a big hit!!! Programming is a little tedious, but well worth the efforts!! I can't say enough good things about this system.
