| Customer Reviews: Excellent for Presentations for Online Teaching and Web Conferences June 30, 2010 R. Owl As a university professor I use the HoverCam X300 both in some of my online webinars and in web conferences with GoToMeeting/GoToWebinar and Adobe Connect with my students and faculty colleagues working on research. Now that I have used the HoverCam, I can't imagine teaching online without it, and it has really enhanced my subscriptions to various online conferencing services.
HoverCam X300 has a three megapixel camera, which works extremely well even in relatively weak light.
There is a new model (the HoverCam Kudos 3) advertised on the HoverCam web site and which also will have a 3 megapixel camera. It is promised to be even lighter and more compact, and I plan to buy one of those as well to carry back and forth between my home and the computer lab on campus where I teach my courses.
When I have written to the company to ask questions, I have received incredibly fast and thorough responses - not just an autoresponse or cut and paste answer that does not address my question. However, you will probably not need to contact HoverCam support, because this document camera and 3d scanner just works!
I am not connected to HoverCam or anyone at its company in anyway, but I have become a real fan of this presentation tool for use in my online teaching and research.
HoverCam 300 full of potential February 25, 2010 Thomas R. Piper (Jefferson City, MO USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This unusual 3-D scanner was first seen at CES, and seems like a good buy for under $140. It is simple to setup, and the software is a breeze to install. The packaging is very protective.
Unfortunately, some of the instructions and diagrams showed components that are no longer included (like the remote control and retractable stand) due to old packaging. The rubber mat was also hard to lay flat until it had been reverse-curled for a day. The instruction and adjustments could use a more comprehensive manual.
Fortunately, it has a very sensitive camera, and a fully adjustable set of LED overhead lamps. With the adjustable contrast, brightness and saturation, you have a lot of visual control over the 200 dpi image. I really like the adjustable zoom from 20 to 200%, which helped to show the iPhone screen to full frame, as well as the ability to flip 90 degrees in either direction . . . this is important for educational sessions using a digital projector.
The rubber mat should have a reversible mat (white on one side for light objects like cellphones, and black on the other side for reflected light objects). The resolution works well for general viewing and is equivalent to a fax. It has lots of options and folders for storing scans by subject into its Library. The duality of top and side controls seems redundant, but he extra save and export buttons helps to direct the saving of scans.
Overall, the hardware seems solid, and the software has great potential for improvement. As a rather unique concept in scanning, this product could go far.
