Product Description Microtek ArtixScan M1 Pro Scanner has M1 Pro has two sets of film holders instead of one, and includes Silverfast Ai Studio software with Auto Calibration. The Microtek ArtixScan M1 is a combined flatbed and film scanner for 35mm, 6cm and 4x5" film formats that also offers additional functionality to scan reflective art or prints as large as 8.5 by 14 inches. Equipped with Emulsion Direct Imaging Technology (E.D.I.T.), the Microtek ArtixScan M1 use 4800-dpi optical resolution, 16-bit digital output per channel, auto focus and new film holders with tension technology. The Microtek ArtixScan M1 offers extraordinary value to photographers, photo enthusiasts, and graphic designers in need of high-quality scans. By advancing the optical resolution to 4800 dpi with the E.D.I.T. scanning architecture, the film scanning capability will surpass the film scanning capability of dedicated film scanners while maintaining outstanding reflective scanning capability. Excelling at both film and reflective scanning, these new flatbed scanners will offer greater versatility and value to photographers, photo enthusiasts, and graphic designers. E.D.I.T. is a unique technology exclusive to Microtek that allows the optical system to scan the film emulsion without looking through the glass plate that supports reflective materials on the flatbed scanner. With E.D.I.T., the film is supported in a tray inside the scanner below the glass plate. The glassless scanning enables clearer scans of the film because it avoids the optical distortions, aberrations, and dirt that can appear in a scan that passes through the glass plate of a typical flatbed scanner. With 4800-dpi optical resolution and 48 bits per pixel, a scan of 35mm film on the Microtek ArtixScan M1 will produce results that will enable prints up to 16x24" while still holding 300 pixels per inch. In addition, large-format prints from 35mm scans can be made up to 24x36" while still hold

BUYER BEWARE - READ before buying MICROTEK July 13, 2008 Dennis Dilmaghani (New York) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I normally don't write reviews, but in this case I feel compelled to let others know in advance what an important manufacturer has done to cut costs and how this policy affects the buyer/user. We recently learned (the hard way) that Microtek has ENTIRELY discontinued tech support by phone. The only way to reach support is by email. They promise a 24-48 hour response! For working professionals who need a responsive support department, this is unacceptable - at best. And whoever you are, professional or not, slow and unresponsive support is a killer, especially after you've spent hundreds of $$$ on a product you can't put to work.. There is a "customer service department" phone number, basically an answering service for repairs and non technical matters, but no LIVE tech support (no matter how hard you plead). ANYONE considering a Microtek product of any sort should consider the above. NO LIVE TECH SUPPORT - only EMAIL Support!!!! If you're thinking about purchasing the M1 or M1 Pro continue reading this review. We have owned several Microtek Scanners in our office over the years. They are excellent scanners and we've been pleased with their performance. Recently we purchased the M1 Pro (hardware same as M1, plus some software add-ons) to replace our Artixscan 1800F. We are advanced users and normally do not encounter many problems we can't figure out. However, as luck would have it, we encountered serious difficulty with the installation of the Microtek ICC profiler and Color Matching System. Both of these software packages failed to install properly after numerous attempts on two independent computers. To make matter worse (and what every reader should know) this renders the main scanning software, the Microtek ScanWizard program, almost useless because it can't be properly calibrated without the others. Of course, we immediately attempted to contact Microtek support only to learn that phone support was a thing of the PAST and that only email contact is possible. It seems that the software problems we've experienced are not unique as others also complain about the M1 software as noted in other reviews on this page as well as on various web blogs. We have been in contact with Microtek support now by email. Over the course of one week, we have had two back and forth exchanges re our problem, none of which have resulted in correcting the issues. The second response almost mimicked the first and requested we perform the same corrections without offering anything new. Our problem seems to have stymied Microtek and while they respond at their convenience, the user is sitting without a usable scanner. It seems we may have to return the entire unit to the store for lack of adequate support. Fortunately, our supplier offers a 30 day return policy. But what happens if there's a problem 60 or 90 days down the road. Good Luck. In case you have not experienced tech support by email, it's a miserable way to go. There are often so many fine details that need to be communicated. Email does not provide the responsiveness of a live body on the other end of the phone. Further, nuances and fine points about configuring software and equipment often require a fair amount of discussion. Getting support by email requires lengthy and time consuming emails not to mention lapses due to response time. There is something of a silver lining to this problem. The M1 comes with an alternate software scanning program by SilverFast (which installed without problem). This is an excellent package and can be used as a replacement for ScanWizard, but it has its own idiosyncrasies and quirks. In our case, we still need to have the Microtek software enabled. We're wondering if Microtek can beat our dealer's 30 day return period. We wouldn't have kept this scanner a week given what we've experienced to date. However, we know it will perform well if the issues are resolved.
Great Product...Questionable Software May 31, 2008 Noel L. Christensen 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The M1 Pro is a fine product that provides excellent quality digitized images of my old Kodachrome 35mm slides that date back to 1953. The software with the unit however required five "uploads" and five "uninstalls" before my new iMac would accept it on the sixth try. Further, I still haven't been able to upload the SilverFast Ai Studio software. The SilverFast is needed since the color calibration for the M1 Pro uses the SilverFast software...Grrrrr. If I were buying it again I would not get the Pro for the extra hundred bucks. Since a second set of slide trays are not needed, all you are getting is a major headache with the SilverFast software.
great results, can be noisy April 25, 2008 S. Music (Jupiter, FL) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Artixscan M1 Pro with ai Studio Flatbed & Film Scanner 4800 Dpi Everything you could possibly need, but definitely for the advance consumer or design pro. The glass face film scanning is great for a good variety of films - better than most dedicated film scanners as well. Tons of software included. It is a bit slow and, for hi-rez scans, it can be a bit noisy, but the results tell the tale. I'm very happy with this scanner for it's versatility, capabilities and the end results. For this price, you do get a lot when you compare it to other similar products like it. My second Microtek and I'm sold.
scanner ok, software not March 15, 2008 Edward W. Hardwicke (Greenville, SC) 4 out of 12 found this review helpful
I have a Microtek scanner and just downloaded the latest drivers. It turns out Microtek wants a program called Scan Finder to load at every start-up, and there is no way to disable this. The product works satisfactorily, but for my money, I will purchase something else. Something that doesn't create such a nuisance, and isn't so invasive.
