Product Description
The Microtek ArtixScan M1 is a combined flatbed and film scanner for 35mm, 6cm and 4x5" film formats that also offers additional functionality to scan reflective art or prints as large as 8.5 by 14 inches. Equipped with Emulsion Direct Imaging Technology (E.D.I.T.), the Microtek ArtixScan M1 use 4800-dpi optical resolution, 16-bit digital output per channel, auto focus and new film holders with tension technology. The Microtek ArtixScan M1 offers extraordinary value to photographers, photo enthusiasts, and graphic designers in need of high-quality scans. By advancing the optical resolution to 4800 dpi with the E.D.I.T. scanning architecture, the film scanning capability will surpass the film scanning capability of dedicated film scanners while maintaining outstanding reflective scanning capability. Excelling at both film and reflective scanning, these new flatbed scanners will offer greater versatility and value to photographers, photo enthusiasts, and graphic designers. E.D.I.T. is a unique technology exclusive to Microtek that allows the optical system to scan the film emulsion without looking through the glass plate that supports reflective materials on the flatbed scanner. With E.D.I.T., the film is supported in a tray inside the scanner below the glass plate. The glassless scanning enables clearer scans of the film because it avoids the optical distortions, aberrations, and dirt that can appear in a scan that passes through the glass plate of a typical flatbed scanner. With 4800-dpi optical resolution and 48 bits per pixel, a scan of 35mm film on the Microtek ArtixScan M1 will produce results that will enable prints up to 16x24" while still holding 300 pixels per inch. In addition, large-format prints from 35mm scans can be made up to 24x36" while still holding 200 pixels per inch. Professional photographers and photo enthusiasts will be able to fully utilize the printable area offered by their photo printers f

3 out of 5 stars Microtek sucks!!!!! It should be moved to 1 Star now   April 24, 2008

Microtek's M1 is the worst scanner I've used. The 1st one I bought worked great for the 1st set of slides I did. Then, a couple months later, the 2nd set didn't scan the colors correctly by a long shot.

Soooo, they had me pay to send it back so they could send me another one...which turned out to be WORSE! It wouldn't even come on at first. The lights flickered on, then went off quickly. And, even though I put the tray & slide tray in correctly, when I pulled it out, the slide tray fell into the scanner -- ??? Still can't figure that one out. So, the slide I had in it and the tray had to be jimmied out -- which scratched my slide!!!!!!

I'm thoroughly pissed and am sending it back. I'll stick with well known companies like Nikon or Epson.

1 out of 5 stars Scan Finder Loads at startup   March 15, 2008

I have a Microtek scanner and just downloaded the latest drivers. It turns out Microtek wants a program called Scan Finder to load at every start-up, and there is no way to disable this. The product works satisfactorily, but for my money, I will purchase something else. Something that doesn't create such a nuisance, and isn't so invasive.

This product is amazing. We have boxes and boxes of old slides, and converting them to digital images has been so easy and the end product is fantastic.

I was surprised at the amount of dust inside the scanner on the bottom of
the platen glass. No way to clean it.
Microtek does not sale a replacement lamp if yours burns out but will offer you a discounted price on a new scanner. In other words this
scanner is not repairable.\Reply from Microtek below.
Hello Customer,

Microtek does not sale a replacement lamp for the scanner. If the lamp goes out within the warranty period Microtek will replace the scanner. However, if the scanner is out of warranty, Microtek does not sale a replacement and the customer will be offered a new scanner at a discounted price.

One last point. I never knew a scanner could be this slow. It's like watching paint dry but less exciting.

I'm sorry I made the mistake of buying a Microtek product.

2 out of 5 stars Difficult with Windows Vista   January 1, 2008

I'm disappointed with this scanner. I initially installed the drivers on a PC using Windows XP - seemed to work fine, though it is somewhat slow and noisy - lots of clunks and whirrs as it goes about its business. I subsequently installed on a new PC running Vista Home Premium - scanner generated nothing but a black screen - reinstalled in safe mode and that seemed to fix the problem, however Microtek's color calibration software does not function properly with Vista - it starts up, but quits before you can finish the profile. Microtek support? Zilch. They don't even get back to you.
Microtek includes a copy of Lasersoft's Silverfast SE Plus, a nice scanner utility program that can be used as an alternative to Microtek's scanner software. It is Vista compatible, but it does not include calibration capability.
Bottom line, if you're running Windows Vista and need a scanner that can be accurately calibrated, avoid the frustration you'll have with this unit and with Microtek's non-existent support - look elsewhere.
