Hardware Ok - Software Mickey Mouse October 3, 2008 MD Coordinator (Tennessee) A3 1200 offers size at a low cost but little else. Software is the worst I've seen. While it works, it has serious limitations and I've been unable to use a hi quality program's twain driver to work around these issues. Their driver locks you into sub-par software. In my home office I use a Canon flatbed and a Fujitsu PDF scanner and am very familiar with scanning and quality scanning software. Recommend this scanner only as a 2nd scanner for very specific large format jobs. Then plan on reprocessing the image through quality software for an acceptable finished product.
Improvement over the USB A3? NO. September 21, 2008 John Hamm My older Mustek A3 went down - bad scanner bar. No way would Mustek sell me a new bar so I had to buy a new scanner. Decided to try the "newer" version. This is a big disappointment. 1) The software isn't as easy to use. It has some new default settings that return to default every time you change anything! Of course I don't want the default settings. 2) With Acrobat 8 this one waits until Acrobat has "processed" the scan before returning the scan bar to rest position - slows down scanning. 3) Mine arrived with the scan bar to PC Board wire ribbon installed incorrectly. The scanner wouldn't make a full pass. 4) The twain driver loses it's percentage reading every time the scan bar passes halfway on an A3 size scan. Eventually it comes back but it is bothersome. 5) The scan bar isn't perpendicular to the scan direction so everything comes out trapezoidal! That's not good when you need an accurate, square scan! 6) Mustek support never has been good - that hasn't changed a bit. 7) It took three (yes, everything was uninstalled before the installs) before the thing would work. Locked up Acrobat, wouldn't scan into other programs, etc. 8) Never have figured out about the "network" scanner settings - no computers (three on the home network) show up in the useable computers. Scan quality is good except for the not being square issue and it is one of the least expensive A3 sized scanners available but my suggestion is to go for the older USB A3 1200 and forget the PRO until Mustek gets their act together (I would not recommend holding your breath).
EXCELLENT PRODUCT September 15, 2008 Nancy Holley (Columbus, GA USA) I was extremely pleased with this scanner. It is easy to use and does a wonderful job. Scanners of this size are not easy to find for a reasonable price and I don't think a more expensive one could be any better. This scanner enabled me to scan several large documents that could never have been scanned on a regular scanner. It took a few minutes to learn how to get to the screen to customize my settings and save the files where I wanted, but once I saw how to do it there was no problem at all. It does have a large footprint because it has to in order to do the job, but fits perfectly on top of a two drawer file cabinet. I put some non skid fabric underneath so it would not slide around. Since it is such a good scanner, I am considering buying a second one to keep as a backup in case this one ever stops working. I hope Amazon continues to have these in stock for a long time.
Where is the correct working driver for the Mac for the Mustek A3 1200 Pro September 14, 2008 Monica Mackeachan (Concord, NH) My son has been unsuccessful in setting up my Mustek Scan Express A3 1200 Pro on my mac mini OS X (10.4.11). He has gone over the instructions and even tried a few tricks of his own. Could you please tell us simple folk step by step exactly what you did to get your scanner to turn on? I bought this scanner from someone on eBay and I hate to think that i got ripped off! The scanner was packaged - unopened, but the "sold to" name and address is NOT me. The "ship to" was to me, though. So, I figure if I do have a problem I am screwed out of the 30 day warranty because the paperwork does not show that I am "the original purchaser". Interestingly, before I purchased this scanner the eBay seller advised that I call Mustek tech support -- and Mustek tech support told me that this model would on my mac OS 9.2...which the accompanying paperwork says it works on mac TEN. (I originally wanted the 11 X 17 size to scan from my mac 9.2.2 because I have and am familiar with Photoshop 7). Shouldn't the scanner at least turn its light on or make some sort of noise? How would I know if there was an internal problem? My son and I have scoured the internet looking for a downloadable driver, such as was suggested by one of the reviewers here, and we could not find one that works with this particular model on mac. Yes, the device came with a disc that does have mac and Windows on it, but when properly installed did not bring the scanner onto the mac computer. The scanner does not make noise and it does not have a light..... Oh, why would my mac mini recognize the scanner but say that it is a "USB 2.0 Scanner -- Hewlett-Packard..." copy and pasted from my computer: Version: 1.00 Bus Power (mA): 500 Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard. Product ID: 0x040b Vendor ID: 0x055f WHAT DOES HEWLETT-PACKARD HAVE TO DO WITH MUSKET ,err, I mean, Mustek ??? At this point I am more inclined to believe the people who gave this product a poor review for it does NOT work with my mac. Pleas, someone out there, prove me technologically inferior to you and email me with a solution if, you are a real reviewer and not some plant from the Company posing as a consumer.
Perfect for this Professional Illustrator/ Designer September 7, 2008 Kenny Cramer (Columbus, Ohio) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This product was everything I needed! As a professional illustrator and graphic designer, I not sure what else you could ask for in a large format scanner. The image quality it fantastic... why would anyone pay $2000 or more for the ability to scan at a resolution above 1600 dpi?! The human eye can only determine a quality distinction at around 240 to 300 dpi... so you would only need to scan things at a higher resolution (than 300 dpi) if you plan on enlarging the original image or object being scanned. For example, if you were to scan a 4" x 6" photograph in this scanner at maximum resolution (1600 dpi), the resulting scan would be equivalent to 21.334" x 32" at 300 dpi. The gist of my review: this scanner should suit the needs of most professionals at a fraction of the cost of other A3 scanners. Great product!
