Amazon.com Product Description
With a 2.5-inch flip-up color LCD display and support for wired or wireless network printing, the Brother MFC-820CW is a workhorse designed to make your work and leisure a lot easier. The unit has a convenient flatbed design that accommodates either single sheets or bound documents for color copying, faxing, or color scanning.

Print, fax, scan, copy, and print photos directly from a memory card with the MFC-820CW. It's got wireless networking, too! View larger.

Use the LCD display to preview your photos before you print them.
The maximum paper size is 8.5 x 14 inches, and there's a ten-page automatic document feeder for making quick multi-page copies. The copier supports reduction and enlargement of documents from 25 to 400 percent, and with print and copy speeds of up to 20 pages per minute, the MFC-820CW is designed to keep up with busy offices.

Meanwhile, outstanding resolution of up to 6000 x 1200 dpi allows you to print sharp photos on glossy paper, and borderless photo printing is supported, too. You can preview your photos and faxes on the 2.5-inch LCD before printing, so you know exactly what you're printing ahead of time. The MFC-820CW's "PhotoCapture" capability features an integrated media drive that lets you print directly from a memory card. Supported card formats include CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Memory Stick and Memory Stick Pro, xD-Picture Card, MultiMediaCard, and Secure Digital. You can even scan directly to a memory card, and as with photo printing, there's no PC required for copying and faxing.

And speaking of faxing, the MFC-820CW's 16 MB of built-in memory lets you store up to 480 pages in memory before you even dial a number. Printing is enhanced by a four-cartridge ink system that allows you to replace just the colors and inks that you're running low on.

Last but not least, the MFC-820CW features versatile networking capabilities that allow you to share the unit among multiple computers on your home or office network. Print, scan, fax, and access the unit's PhotoCapture features via a wired or wireless network. The unit supports 802.11 b/g networking so you can place it anywhere and use it wire-free. A USB 2.0 connection is also provided for directly connecting the unit to a computer. PC and Mac printer and scanning drivers are included, and the latest updates are available from Brother.com. Brother provides a one-year warranty, covering parts and service.

1 out of 5 stars What a piece of junk!   August 11, 2008
After about a year or two of light use and several cartridge changes, I get a No Cartridge Found message. The machine has shut down all printing. I've followed all procedures in the manual and searched the Brother web site in vain. The thing has become an expensive paperweight. Since I bought it on Amazon, I've spent at least $100 in ink cartridges printing only hundreds not thousands of pages.

Besides brief cartridge checking and cleaning procedures, Brother only recommends contacting an authorized repair dealer. Right!? Let me spend $100 in addition to all the ink expenses to fix something that probably has no current value.

I strongly recommend you look elsewhere before buying this thing. It's not a printer. It's a piece of junk.

4 out of 5 stars I love it - now that it is all set up   July 1, 2008
I love this printer now that it is all set up. I'm techy and it was still a pain in the butt to get connected wirelessly. Not because it wouldn't connect, just because the instructions were confusing even for me. However, once it was connected, and I put the software on each computer that will use it, it works like a dream. The print quality is not as good as the huge hp all-in-one that this replaced, but it is acceptable for what I do with it. Also, the primary reason I got it was the wireless capabilities and the size. It is 1/2 the size of the beast it replaced, but you can tell it is not cheaply made. 5 stars once it is all set up!

1 out of 5 stars terrible - avoid   September 24, 2007
constant paper jams. various color inks in different cartridges but they mysteriously must all be replaced simultaneously. hmmm.
very bad on screen instrutions. not well made. has not worked for more than a day or two in a row.
after months still cant figure out how to use wireless connection.

3 out of 5 stars Works well when configured, but...   July 17, 2007
This was one of the few wireless printers I've found that boasted good specs and seemed to be both affordable and rated reliably. I happen to work for a now-world recognized brand of computer technical agents, and I have done my share of networking, both wired and wirelessly. It can definitely be done, but do not get discouraged when you realize it's not nearly as easy as the directions explain to you. There is a utility you can find on Brother's website to set this printer up in your PC by having your computer locate and print to it by MAC address and the utility helps you create an .exe file that you can launch from every one of your computers to make setup easy and extremely fast. Make it easy for yourselves and wire this via USB directly to your computer for initial setup. Quick tip: you must lift the top of the printer like you were going to install the ink cartridges to connect this via USB.
It's also nice that all cartridges are separate so you do not have to buy a whole new color cartridge when you run out of only one color.

Downsides: 1-if you don't print to this thing every day, expect your first 2 pages to be off-colored and look like you need to clean your print-heads over and over again. (It started doing this after 5 or-so months-I'm a student so I was printing constantly, then off and on for a few months). Cleaning the printer and re-aligning and buying new cartridges has not helped me with this issue. Just print 2 'test pages' first. 2-I have 2 roommates, and like I said, we're students. We have owned this printer for less than a year and are already on our 4th set of ink.

All in all though, it's a great purchase and works very well. If you look online you can even find ink for less than $25 for all 4 cartridges.

5 out of 5 stars Great Multi-function printer / love the WI-FI   March 29, 2007
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Just bought this printer (although at costco at a better price), and have to say after my HP all-in-one clunker this thing is great.

- sleak/small and light
- everything is nicely tucked away & within easy reach, installation etc.
- preview lcd screen which works nice and thorough menus
- wifi networking (via your wlan)
- it prints great images, quick and quality
- scanner and faxer work very well

One of the highlights is definately the WIFI functionality. Previously on my HP I had to do some XP printersharing magic to get it to work with my Macbook. Now I just looked for the printer, found it in a snap and added it.

I'm done with HP. Go Brother!
