I did not read about this printer before I bought it, but I should have! I got maybe 20 pages printed from the starter cartridges. The first half were incredible! The second half started to have some problems. I bought all new cartridges, and I did a nozzle check four times, and suddenly, I was nearly out of ink on all three color ones, and half-way out of ink on the black one. That is with no printing whatsoever!
I called Epson who told me they believe in Worldwide Great Customer Service, and are sending me a replacement printer because it was a hardware issue. I don't hold a lot of hope for that one to be much better after reading other reviews.
If you are picking this printer like I was because you want to only spend $15 on a black cartridge when you need a black, then don't bother. Even if the cartridges actually worked, you have to have full cartridges for any of them to work. You can't just say, "I don't have color, so I'll print in black." The printer will not work!
If you have made the mistake I made, as soon as your cartridges are out, you can call Epson and give them a credit card (which they will not charge, unless you don't return the broken one), and do an exchange, but when you are ready to buy additional cartridges...pick another printer. Any printer...just not an Epson!

This printer would be a great printer if Epson hadn't made some critical decisions that essentially cripple the device.
First, the ink cartridges are too small. The epson rep at best buy explained that because the ink is separate cartridges, and the cartridges are the cheapest on the market (both true statements), you only need to buy what you need. This statement appealed to me as the ink was indeed cheap.
The problem is that they're too small. I've replaced black twice this year and only printed out occasionally - some directions here, a shopping list there. most certainly not office-use. it must boil down to something like 10-20 cents per page at this rate. maybe more.
The next problem is that when Epson feels like the ink is out, the printer is totally useless. No, you can't change the font to blue and print in a different color. Also, no scanning or anything else. it's dead....I'm convinced I'm not out of ink but Epson think so... the last 3 pages it printed were crisp and then it stops and says it won't continue without me buying more ink.
Screw you Epson for FORCING me to buy ink.
I'll be buying a different printer now because this is not acceptable to me...

This is my third Epson printer. I dearly loved my others. The CX8400 is the worst piece of junk printer I have owned. Epson has already replaced this for me once on warranty and the second is no better. The biggest problem is the paper loading and feed. You have to stand directly over the paper feed to load the paper to be sure it gets into the slot. Then it generally pulls the paper on a slight skew. Every time I print labels it smudges the bottom of the page with black ink.
I have all new cartridges inst5alled and without using more than 1% of the color the software show the ink levels at 10% Either the software is not working or ink is dripping out of the cartridges into the printer. Since support is with people who cannot understand what you are telling themand just read back a script, calling support is very frustrating.

I have been using this printer for a bit over a year and think it is just fine. I use it on a regular basis as I am a college student and have only replaced the ink one time. I generally just print in draft mode or in B&W. Also, it is vista compatible. I have vista on my computer and have been using this printer since I got the computer. The only problem I have ever is that it is a bit finnicky about paper loading which can be annoying when in a hurry. Other than that no complaints though. We actually have three different epsons in our home now. We have two of this model and one of the upgrade and are very happy.
