5 out of 5 stars Great adapter and earbuds for the price   October 3, 2008
Ryan Ebert (Oregon,USA)
This is a great adapter for the price. Works well with my LG ENV2 and the call answer button works as well. The stock earbuds are OK but nothing special. Nice thing is you can use your own earphones with the adapter.

5 out of 5 stars Works for ANY phone with a 2.5 mm jack. ANY headphones can be used.   October 2, 2008
Nathan Robinson (Provo, UT USA)
I got this in anticipation of getting my new phone, the LG EnV2. It may have the words, "works for all LG phones with 2.5 mm jacks," on the package, but that's just marketing strategy in order for LG to get you to buy this headset for their phones, but I used it for my Motorola RAZR V3m (with an adapter), and it worked better than the Motorola headset that came with the Vcast Music Essentials that I bought years ago.

The 3.5 mm jack, located next to the mic, is very convenient if you don't want to use LG's earbuds that come with this headset. I didn't have that same freedom with the Motorola headset. The 3.5 mm jack will, of course, let you plug in any kind of headphones as well as computer speakers, which is a great option if you want to put on music at a friend's or if you have a little party at the spur of the moment. It also works for a tape converter if you have a cassette player in your car. If someone calls you on the road, you can use your car's speakers as the earpiece while driving, but you need to talk into the mic for the other person to hear you, so I wouldn't recommend using your car's speakers as the earpiece. It's great for listening to music on your phone and is actually quite decent for listening to music in your car, though iPods sound better in your car as they give a better thump with the bass. (I've compared several mp3s, unchanged, with both my phone and iPod)

The mic has a button on it that answers calls so that you don't have to go to your phone to answer the call, which is typical with cell phone headsets. It has a volume dial on the side, again, so you don't have to go to your phone each time you want or need to turn up/down the volume of music or someone talking to you. It also has a clip on it that rotates so that you can position the mic in any direction that you'd like. I'm always rotating it, and the rotation hasn't gotten loose to this day. I've had the product for a few months now.

As other reviewers have noted, the earphone's cord is shorter on the left side, but long enough on the right side to reach around your neck to your other ear with room to spare. I don't care for that, but I got this headset specifically so I don't have to use the standard earphones that LG provides, so I'm not going to rate this any lower.

The length of the cord of the headset and earphones is near 6 feet, with the earphones about 2 feet in length on their own. If you use a different set of headphones, then it's likely that the whole thing will be even longer! A lot of cord can be messy, especially if you have the phone in your pocket... the cord will hang down past your knees if you're using a different pair of headphones. I'm still not rating this product any lower because I just keep the excess cord tucked under my shirt.

If you're like me and want flexibility to using different kinds of headphones to listen to music, but still want a mic for calls, then I recommend this product.

4 out of 5 stars Works good   September 21, 2008

You could actually hear when you are talking. The only bad thing is the long cord.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't work for Treo 750 or other palm devices   September 19, 2008
Kian O'Connell (Indiana)
This was supposed to be a simple replacement for the poor factory stereo hybrid headset that came with my Palm Treo 750. Previously I had to carry an mp3 player separate from my cell phone. I listen to my player all the time, so a good quality pair of comfortable earphones was a necessity.
Unfortunately, most hybrid headsets have lousy uncomfortable earphones that sound like crap.
Then I found this headset. What a wonderful concept! A 2.5mm stereo headset plug that ends with a microphone and a jack that allows me to plug my own earphones into it. Unfortunately there were several issues.
The biggest problem is the pinout. When I first plugged it in, it played music in the right ear only and the microphone didn't function. I came to find out that the pinout for the palm devices is different than the pinout on LG and other so-called "standard" devices. But for the price and the anticipated gain I decided it would be worth re-wiring them.
For those palm users who are looking at these I'll post below exactly what I did. But for review sake I'll continue on the product...
Once I was able to change the wiring to go along with Palm's methods I found it to work out just perfectly.
The set comes with it's own earphones which are about the same quality as those you get with a phone or mp3 player - or in other words, junk worthy of nothing more than a backup in the glove box for worst case scenarios or sharing with a passenger. But I didn't buy this for the earphones. I bought it to plug my Koss earphones into. This works just right. The microphone is not excessively heavy and has a clip on it to attach to a collar or shirt. The jack is sturdy and the plug from my earphones stays in nicely with no additional static or noise from moving around. The microphone provides clear voice even in my convertible with the top down. Pushing the button while the music is playing when no call is coming in activates the voice command built into the phone and allows me to voice dial, pushing it when the phone is ringing answers the call and pushing it while on a call disconnects the call - all without ever having to touch the phone. There is a small volume wheel on the microphone part as well to control the volume to the earphones.
As for the cons, the cord from the plug to the microphone could really use and extra foot or two. The length is about 2.5 feet - maybe 3 - I never measured it. My re-wiring only took about half an inch off the total length. Still, in the end, the goal was to spend less than $10 and be able to use my own earphones which after my modification works flawlessly. If you don't have a palm product it should be very nice. If you do, it can still work, but with the following modifications....

OK. Here's how I modified it. The problem is that on a palm device, the tip of the plug, pin one, is the microphone. Pin 2 is the right ear, and pin 3 is the left channel. On the LG - or any other "standard" hybrid headset, pin one is the left channel, pin 2 is still the right earphone, and pin 3 is the left earphone.

The solution is to cut the cord about 4-6 inches above the plug. This will give you extra wire if you make mistakes. It will also keep the heat away from the microphone section.

Carefully strip about an inch and a half from both parts where you cut the wire. Inside you will see red, green, and blue wires along with some bare copper. The bare copper is your ground. The colors are a thin insulator that is semi-transparent.
Next you will need to tin the ends of the wires. Use a soldering iron to burn off the insulator. Use a lot of flux to do this. It will cause the stuff to liquify and drip and you will have to clean your iron several times. After this, use some more flux and some rosin core solder. Get the solder on the tip of the iron and then carefully drag the tip of each wire through the solder several times till it is a nice silver color.
Once you have the wires prepared, you simply connect them. The copper and copper go together. The red goes back to the red as they are the right channel which is fine. The blue and green get swapped. Blue to green and green to blue. Hold each pair that you want to connect together facing each other just as they were before you cut it but overlapping where the soldered ends are. Then briefly touch this overlapped portion to the iron and they will solder together.
Next, get some electrical tape about 1 inch long and cut it in half down the middle. Use this to put a small wrap around each wire where it is soldered so you don't cause any shorts. Then wrap the whole thing in shrink wrap or electrical tape. I used a white tape to look nicer.
Now your headset should function properly on a palm device.
I hope this helps other palm users I looked all over for this info and pretty much had to wing it. Maybe I can at least save some other people some time.
