Amazon.com Product Description
If you're missing calls because you can't hear the phone ring, and if you don't find much comfort in those annoying (and tiny) blinking lights that aren't much help from across the room, consider the Uniden EZI-996. The practical design helps solve a number of problems for users with minor sight or hearing challenges.

Two large red lights on the base indicate when the phone is ringing and when you have a voicemail message--and they're large enough to see more clearly from a distance. A belt clip is included, so you can keep the handset with you as you walk around the house. You can also keep your hearing aid connected and wear the handset comfortably at your waist. Separate controls adjust the ringer and the handset volume, and a handset indicator sound helps you locate the unit if you've lost it in the couch cushions. The keypad is backlit and has large buttons, making it easier to see when dialing.

The EZI-996 operates with a reliable 900 MHz transmission and tried-and-true analog technology. With subscription to service through your local phone company, the 30-station caller ID tracks your recent calls and returns them at the touch of a button. A separate 10-station memory stores your most frequently dialed numbers, with a one-touch dial for an emergency contact. Uniden includes a one-year warranty covering parts and service.

5 out of 5 stars 900mhz the way to go   October 6, 2008
Salvatore Persico (usa)
I bought this for my mother-in-law, with an emphasis on IN-LAW.

The problem with all the other phones, is that she could not travel around her cave, at the speed aided by a walker, without losing the signal.
Lower frequency, longer range.
ET 101.

That's it.
No more calls sayiing "Well it's nice but I can't hear when I'm"........fill in the blank.

Aside from the obvious,"Don't go there when your on the phone!" I got her the 900mhz Uniden and the calls stopped.

If you or anyone that you know is so afflicted, buy this phone, or ear plugs.

"God is in his Heaven and all is right with the world".

This phone fit the bill.

great looking phone with big numbers and light up ringer! Would have rated it with 5 stars, but does not have a speaker phone feature.

I bought a 900 MHz Uniden phone in '98 or so, and it was totally fine--impressive, really. It lasted a decade before I managed to destroy it (my fault--not an issue with the phone). The range was maybe half a block through housing, the signal was clear, the battery life was great, and it was a good, clean design. I liked Uniden then, so I thought I'd give them another shot.

This phone's negatives:
(1) The range is limited and the sound quality is poor, often static-filled if I'm not in the same or an adjacent room to the base station. Going into the basement one floor below the base station is problematic--never an issue with my older Uniden.
(2) There's an intense red strobe that indicates voice mail waiting. The strobe has two settings. The dimmer setting is still bright enough that the neighbors across the alley probably wonder if there's danger of some explosion in my kitchen. An LED would have been much more appropriate, and used less power.
(3) Emergency, 911, is a single button. Why place a button people will seldom use in a place where it could easily be accidentally pressed? Are they concerned that as I age I won't remember the number of the local 911 service?
(4) The ringer volume buttons are on the handset, right where someone picking the phone up would naturally place a thumb. I've had to repeatedly readjust the ringer volume just because I've picked the phone up to make a call.
(5) The phone generates much more heat than the older Uniden. It's not enough that I'm concerned about the lifetime of the phone, but it is enough that I make sure to unplug it when I leave town for a few days since it's apparently drawing considerable current.

Positives:
(1) I used to prefer mechanical ringers because they're louder. This one's plenty loud.
(2) Give me a while, and I might think of something else. OTOH, it'll probably be a negative, not a positive.

So, I bought this three months ago and still feel that I need a new phone. Good Will will get this one soon.

5 out of 5 stars Great for people with LOW vision   August 27, 2008
A. Goldstein (Mpls, MN USA)
I purchased this phone for a friend who is leagally blind and physically impaired with MS. She lives in a high rise, and finally has a user friendly portable phone. The sound is really good. The red lights flashing for both a message and ringing help her tremendously. This is the best phone we have found for her needs
