Product Description
Hewlett-Packard's LaserJet 4050N network laser printer is built to meet present and future general office and advanced business printing needs. The LaserJet 4050N monochrome printer serves mid-sized workgroups well with its 17 ppm speed. Its 65,000 page duty cycle and 600-page input capacity make it a hard-working addition to any busy office. And the expanded Control Panel Help feature allows users to troubleshoot print interrupts right at the printer. The LaserJet 4050N uses Resolution Enhancement technology (REt) and an UltraPrecise toner cartridge for sharp monochrome prints suitable for corporate presentations. The HP FastRes technology yields 1200 dpi prints at engine speed, powered by a NEC?s microprocessor and RAM. The instant-on ceramic fuser gets the first page out in less than 15 seconds, from a warm or cold start. Upgrade with the optional hard drive and store repeat print jobs, forms, fonts and signatures. The printer holds 600 sheets of paper at the ready in one 100-sheet multipurpose tray and one 500-sheet tray. Print on a variety of media including transparencies, specialty papers, envelopes and labels. Available paper handling options include an envelope feeder, auto-duplexer and large capacity trays for future expansion. The Fast Infrared Connect adapter allows for walk-up, cable-free printing from laptops, PDAs or other infrared-capable devices. The fast Ethernet print server supports all major network operating systems including OS/2 Warp and UNIX. One open EIO slot allows network connectivity for other optional HP JetDirect internal print servers for Ethernet, LocalTalk and TokenRing networks. The 4050N supports HP PCL 6, PCL 5e and PostScript Level 2 emulation, with 110 TrueType scalable typefaces. It automatically switches between languages and ports, and supports a free Web JetAdmin printer management software download from HP's site.

Amazon.com Review
Part of the LaserJet 4050 line of quality laser printers, the network model 4050N offers 16 MB RAM, HP JetDirect 600N internal print server (a 10/100 Base-TX fast Ethernet card), and a fast infrared receiver.

The LaserJet 4050's standard 500-sheet paper tray slides into the front of the printer; paper follows an S-path through the printer and ejects face-down into a generous 250-sheet output bin on the top of the unit. Alternately, you can flip down a tray in the rear of the printer that handles 50 sheets. The printer's front also hosts a flip-down, multipurpose feed tray that can handle 100 sheets of ordinary paper as well as media ranging from 3-by-5-inch cards to legal-sized paper. The tray's adjustable guides automatically center the paper.

Toner cartridges slide effortlessly into a large opening on top of the unit. This opening, along with well-marked access levers, also lets you access the entire paper path. Hewlett-Packard's TonerGauge tracks the number of printed toner dots and sends an accurate reading to the control panel and the management software.

The menu structure is immediately understandable and the control panel easy to use. On the control panel, three LED indicators show the printer's online status, activity, and error conditions, while a series of buttons on the right allows you to maneuver through the printer's scrollable menus. The LaserJet 4050N's online help system allows you to scroll through troubleshooting solutions on the control panel.

The LaserJet 4050N comes with interfaces for parallel, serial, and 10/100 Base TX as standard, but 10-T/10-2 LocalTalk interfacing is available as an option. The LaserJet 4050N's fast infrared receiver in the rear is handy if you have a compatible notebook and like the idea of printing wirelessly from across your office.

In addition to font and macro storage, a hard disk enables the LaserJet 4050N to perform several types of jobs: Private Printing, Proof and Hold, Stored Jobs, and Quick Copies. Private Printing enables users to encode a print job with a PIN number and release the job at the printer by entering the code. Proof and Hold is a feature bound to save paper--it prints the first copy of a document and only prints the subsequent ones after you look at the proof and release the job at the printer. Quick Copying lets you print up to 999 additional copies of the last job without reloading the source application. Stored Jobs can live at the printer, and you can print them on demand from the control panel without any PC involvement.

Given 4050N's impressive features, its fast 17-page-per-minute, jam-free printing, its network interfacing, and its strong manageability features, we think this is a fine business printer.

Pros:

  • Strong manageability features
  • Excellent control panel
  • Prints up to 17 pages per minute
  • Innovative workgroup options

Cons:

  • Printer cable not included

3 out of 5 stars Good general performance, but lots of "paper jams"   November 7, 2007

We have about 6 LaserJet 4050 printers and we are generally happy with them; however, there is a serious problem with the print feed rollers on these machines. We find that users complain of paper jams after a few thousand prints. It is always the case that the paper has not actually jammed, but is sitting on the hold down brackets because the lower pf roller has warn and can't pick it up. Replacing the pf rollers resolves the issue, but is a constant problem (pf roller run around $4.00 each).

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Printer!   January 10, 2007

This printer delivers exceptional quality and performance, it's fast, and it's tremendously reliable. It is a true workhorse, and that is priceless. I have printed an average of 100-200 pages per day, every day, for the last 4+ years, and have never been disappointed (and I have very low tolerance for products that don't work!). I have needed only one service call, and that was easy too, because the HP site provides links to service providers. The tech came out the next day, and he went beyond repairing and replacing the part; he cleaned the machine inside and out, made suggestions for maximum usage and efficiency, and provided excellent customer service. With HP, I truly feel that I am getting so much product (and innovation and reliability) for so little money (and, no, I don't own their stock!).

5 out of 5 stars great printer, rare jams, reliable, wise investment.   December 31, 2006

I have at least one to two of this model printer in the offices I work at because they are so reliable, and need minimal maintenence. All of mine are in health care settings, where records are key. The toner last for many sheets of printing (never counted, but I know I probably go more than 1000 sheets at least). The printer rarely jams (except when I used really cheap thin paper), and the secretaries love the sheet feed selection if having to use overhead paper for a letter. The quality of the print (i believe up to 1200dpi) is great for black and white. Highly recommended investment, quite likely one of the last printers your office will need.

1 out of 5 stars Stay away from this type of printer   March 19, 2006

In the hospital I worked we have HP laserjet 4050N in every floor. Initially, it looks okay but later a lot of problem with paper jam and not recognizing the size of paper. More than half of printers in the hospital end up feeding from the front, in attempt to trick that stupid HP printer. Otherwise, it stopped printing after first page. HP has a very unreliable customer support and they won't waste their time once 1 yr warrenty period is over. They don't even seem to know the printers they produced and will suggest you to buy a new one.

5 out of 5 stars what a work horse!   March 21, 2003

I have three of these printers for my office (Also a Cannon IR5000 and an HP Color 4500 to explain the caliber of printers that I use.

The first one I have had for 3 years and it works as good as the day I got it. I use it for between 20 and 200 pages a day EVERY day. The Extended life toner cartridge seems to last FOREVER. The network feature was quite easy to setup through NT, XP, and 2000 using the standard Windows Drivers.. Heck I didn't even need a driver disk - How cool is that?

The second and third ones are general office printers which handle 200+ pages a day. Again easy network configuration and never a problem.

I don't [care]what the resolution is, or that fact that is spits out 16+ pages a minute - All that matters for me is that it works, I don't ever have to fix it, and it's super fast. I work in a wood shop and I swear this thing sits under 1/2 inch of dust. I blow it off with an air hose once a month and that is it. The manual feed works great too.

One more thing - In the seemingless infinte printouts we make - we have never had one jam... Not ONE.

Stop looking and buy this printer! You will not forgive yourself if you pass it up.

I would and will buy this printer again.

Matthew
