Editorial Reviews:

And because it's from Canon, you can count on innovative design inside and out, making it simple to scan everything from magazine graphics, photos and business cards to articles and more. No training necessary. Just plug it into the power outlet and your PC's parallel port and it's ready to use. A patented image sensor helps produce outstanding results, whether you're scanning graphics or clip art, text to import into your favorite word processing application, or photos for presentations or e-mail delivery. Amazon.com Review
Make high quality scans of graphics, photos, line art, or text, and get great imaging and optical character recognition software for an incredibly low price—all with the Canon CanoScan FB620P scanner. It's so small, and so cute; the CanoScan seems barely bigger than the documents it scans.

To setup the CanoScan, we attached the parallel cable to our PC (USB is not supported), plugged in the AC adapter, dropped in the CD-ROM, and followed the setup wizard. (If you restart your computer before running the CanoScan's setup wizard, you can cancel the Windows New Hardware Installation wizard that runs automatically.) When you're following the setup wizard, make sure you indicate that you want to install the 620P, not the 320P whose drivers are also included on the same CD-ROM.

In our tests of the CanoScan, we first conducted preview scans of several documents and images just to get acquainted with the scanner. These preview scans and other low resolution scans (75 dpi) were fast and easy, but high-resolution scans were very slow, on the order of several minutes. Still, the images were sharp and clear, and the final scans were comparable to those of much more expensive scanners.

If you're looking for an inexpensive, light-duty scanner that's easy to setup and learn, the CanoScan makes a fine choice. --Mike Brown

Pros

  • Lightweight, small, portable
  • Easy setup
Cons
  • Slow scanning in high resolution
  • Parallel interface only

This is a great beginner scanner on Windows 98 or older..does not work with XP...found out the hard way. Great for scanning & cropping photos for email.

1 out of 5 stars I have a FB620P and it was a good unit...but wait.   March 5, 2004

Do not even think of buying this scanner if you are running XP or Win2k. It will not work on either operating system. There are no drivers available from Canon to upgrade from Win98 to 2K or XP.
I wont buy another Canon product because of this.

1 out of 5 stars Great, if your favorite color is red   January 16, 2000

OK for black & white scans, but color scans are RED all over. Even the underside of the scanner cover, which is white, scans as red. Canon doesn't have a toll-free number for tech support and doesn't respond to emails. So don't buy this one unless you really like red.

4 out of 5 stars Great beginner scanner   January 5, 2000

Was somewhat more difficult to set up than I anticipated. I had a few problems configuring it with Windows 98. Once setup was complete, scanner is easy to use and a great space saver. High res scans are slow, but all scans are clear and colorful. I did not receive a rebate coupon with scanner and wasn't able to find it on the website to print out. Requested copy of coupon by fax and still waiting to hear. This is a great scanner for beginners and light users, I highly recommend it!

1 out of 5 stars Good Hardware, Lousy Software   January 2, 2000

I purchased this scanner for its small size and its reportedly acceptable scan quality. After installation, I could not scan into the included Adobe PhotoDeluxe 2.0 on my Windows 98 system, although I could scan into other applications and import the photo into PD2 if necessary. I later installed PD3.0, with disastrous results--scans into all of my image editing programs are now grossly discolored. Now entering round 2 of time consuming, annoying communications with Canon tech support. If you do not have many hours to spend on such nonsense, I do NOT recommend this scanner.
