Best investment ever for me March 19, 2010 Savvy Shopper (St. Louis) I know everybody says this, but this is the best gift I ever received. Recently retired and travelling more. Not having to carry around a lot of books is great, but even better is the ability to get new ones when you get stuck somewhere and run out of things to read. Amazon customer service is absolutely terrific too! When I had a problem that couldn't easily be fixed they delivered a new one to me within 24 hours with no hassle whatsoever! I've never been treated so well by any other retailer.
Exactly what I needed March 19, 2010 Spellbound (Nova Scotia Canada) I have had my Kindle for exactly a month. It is the first piece of technology I have bought where I could, literally, turn on and start using immediately. It is exactly what it says it is and does exactly what it says it does. Speedy download of books - easy transfer of personal manuscripts, a joy to use and they are right - it does change the way you read "the focus is on the 'content' rather than the physical page turning etc."
When it comes to comparing with a traditional printed book, one main difference I found was that there was none of the difficulty sometimes experienced with reading the verso, especially close to the rh margin.
Kindle is light weight, great for travelling (no suitcase full of books for a trip), really easy to use and get to know. I am pleased I didn't wait. I am also pleased I went for the 6" not the 9".
I had a query about American v. Canadian spelling before buying, that was adequately answered - if a book is published and/or written by an American author, it will use American spelling. If by a Canadian then Canadian spelling etc. This has not proved to be absolutely true - but the problem is so minor, I can live with it.
I really have nothing negative to say about it.
Kindle reading device March 19, 2010 Yvonne Stewart (germany) This is the best present I have ever bought for myself! I love to read and the fact that I can have any book I choose onto my Kindle within a few minutes of purchase from anywhere in the world is pretty amazing. I live in Germany where it is not easy to find books in English and this has been a lifesaver for me. Thanks Amazon!
Kindle - I've Misjudged You March 19, 2010 R. Puckett (Clarksville, TN USA) I've spent a lot of time over the past years deriding the concept of the Kindle. I've always said that I really prefer the feel of a book in my hand. But after cleaning boxes of paperbacks out of my office, I came to the realization that I normally read a paperback once ... maybe twice ... and then it becomes clutter. So, after much consideration, I decided to buy the Kindle to replace the piles of paperbacks.
Honestly, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it. But I have to say I love this device. The cover I purchased to protect my new Kindle still gives me that 'holding a book' feeling, and it's nice to finish a book and not wonder what I'm going to do with the paperback (I was taught that books are to be shared, not thrown away). The device is easy to use, and the E Ink technology is remarkably comfortable to the eye.
The ability to download a sample of a book I may be interested in is also very appealing. I have peeked around in books I probably wouldn't have given a second look in a bookstore, comfortable in the knowledge that if I don't like it I can remove it in a couple of clicks.
In short, I have gone from a Kindle opponent to a Kindle supporter in little over a week. There are still books that I will buy in hardcover and put on my bookshelf, but those books by favorite authors would have ended up on my bookshelf in hardcover anyway.
The reality is that I very well may have purchased my last paperback.
I love my Kindle March 19, 2010 Joseph Johnson I truly love my Kindle. I have not had any problems with this reader unlike other products like this. I wish is was back lit so I could use this at night without a light but other than that one thing this is a perfect product for me.
