2 out of 5 stars Paper Weight   March 10, 2010
L. Henry (Wilkes-Barre, PA)
I recently purchased this Magellan 1470 and used it once for 2 hours. I was checking out the website and it recommended a firmware update. Following all the instructions I completed the update and it promptly turned my brand new gps into a paper weight. It was stuck on the startup screen. After calling customer service several times I had to return my gps. In exchange I was to get a reconditioned one back. After again making several more calls I was told that they would indeed send me a new gps. This was only after I pointed out that the gps was only three days old and that doing their firmware update actually broke it.

The product is very nice but since they actually broke it, it would suggest you go a different direction.

4 out of 5 stars ..only disappointment...   March 9, 2010
bud (Collegeville, PA)
is that the POI are not very current.... there are some new streets/malls in area thatare over a year old with street dedication..yet not in their list.

biggest disappointment is that the updates to current maps are not avaiblable for free with initial purchase...

love how loud it is and the POI it does have work great!

4 out of 5 stars Getting there made easy   March 5, 2010
Richard F. Eggleton (Los Angeles)
I spent days and days researching GPS devices, going to stores, reading online reviews, visiting manufacturer's sites and talking to people who owned GPS devices. I even bought and returned two other units - A Magellan 1445T and a Navigon 7200. I thought my research would guide me to the best unit for me. Boy was I wrong and did I waste a lot of time.
Ask yourself what is really important to you before you buy. For me that was FREE lifetime traffic alerts, lane guidance, an easy to see and read display, QWERTY input and accuracy. That narrowed the field considerably. What I found out was the two major manufacturers focus their sales pitch on "features and benefits" but pay little attention to clear concise descriptions of what their device really does or how it works.
I got my Magellan 1470 last week. I didn't buy the 1475T since I bought a second Traffic power cable/FM receiver when I got my 1445T and couldn't get it to work and kept the receiver.
I unpacked the unit and eagerly fired it up; no luck the battery wasn't charged enough. Since Magellan has forgone an AC power cord to keep costs down and wants an arm and leg for their brand I had to wait until I had someplace other than the grocery store as a destination. The instructions say it may take 3 to 4 hours to fully charge the unit.
Alpine here I come - on a rainy Saturday afternoon the 90 miles would stretch to two hours mostly on the only corridor between Los Angeles and San Diego the busy, nasty Interstate 5.
I mounted the suction cup, attached the unit and plugged in the power supply firing up the device and programmed my destination into the unit. The unit took about 10 seconds to start, found the signal wihtin about a minute and off I went; so far so good. ERG. Getting on the 5 I wanted to see what traffic problems where on my way and when I pressed the traffic alert got the "acquiring signal" message I'd gotten with the 1445T. Oh no, not again! I could never get that unit to acquire a signal, spent hours on the phone with customer (lack of) support being told that "coverage in LA is spotty" by someone in India who did what I did, pulled up the coverage map from the Magellan website. LA county is huge so yes, some areas don't get great signal but come on Magellan but those customer lack-of support people a clue.
I'd driven for an hour before I got to Oceanside in North San Diego County and traffic ground to a halt just like always. I looked at the unit and found to my surprise there was a red outline to the traffic triangle - yay, success it must be getting some signal! It did and showed me not the traffic jam I was in but two others on my route 18 and 32 miles away. The Oceanside back up was normal and heavy rain slowed it down more. But 3 minutes later I was back up to 60MPH.
Out in Alpine (30 miles east of downtown San Diego) it's hill country in the high desert so when I got in the car for the drive back I didn't expect a signal; to my surprise the traffic icon had a green outline and when pushed indicated a strong traffic signal. Yay...maybe I had a keeper?
What I like: The unit has a great display - strong colors easy to read. Inputting destination data is easy - ZIP code entry is a good start not available on the comparable Brand X units which require you to input the state, then city, then street. If you are a PC I suggest you update the software ASAP, if you are a MAC you are SOL - Brand X offers compatibility for both.
What I don't like:
It's hard to input data and requires use of a fingernail or stylist; I suppose that's good and cuts down on input error.
There is no "quick start" guide in the box and no CD so Magellan has decided that their devices are so intuitive that it isn't necessary to include those - keeping the cost down. Hey Magellan, it's really hard to figure the unit out if it won't power up so you can sit at your computer and read this stuff on your website.
No AC power cable. With all the cool routing ability it would be nice to sit down and program in your address book, multiple trips with multiple locations rather than struggle with this in the car.
No address book interface.
No MAC compatibility.
Card slot for pictures is a complete waste of time. If you are driving there is only one thing you should be doing, driving, not looking at pictures.
No ability to change the voice.
The worst customer service on the planet.
Can't move the icons on the home display or order them so "home" is in the lower right corner and the more GoTos you add the harder it becomes to find.
High price/high margin accessories. Come on guys $24.99for the AC power cord? And customer service makes a big deal out of using anything but Magellan - actually locked up the 1445t when I charged it with a standard adapter.
My conclusion is that this is a very good unit for the price as long as you don't pay retail. It's easy to use and gets you there better than the $2200 unit in my wife's late model German car that always thinks we live across the street.
Remember to write down what you need out of a unit and shop based on your needs. This is a perfectly good unit for those of us who drive in the Los Angeles, San Diego megaplex of freeways, highways, city streets and by-ways. Don't waste a lot of time on research, buy what you think will work and try it. If you don't like it return it and buy something else. 4 out of 5 stars It's a good buy if you get one that will upgrade to the 2.2 firmware update   March 5, 2010
Travis M. Erck (Chicago, IL)

I got my first Roadmate 1470 and the POI search was terrible taking well over 5 minutes in most cases to locate business'. I also didn't like the style keyboard since it wasn't QWERTY. But, I found out 2.2 firmware update on MAgellan website will fix all that so I downloaded it and it bricked the unit.

Amazon did a next day shipment on the return and sent me another one. Amazon return process was very nice.
This second unit I received I was hesitant to update it so I waited a few weeks. I then decided to call
Magellan as I got impatient with the POI search and told them on the phone my experience and that I was nervous
about updating this unit and asked for some resolution to this since the POI search didn't work well with 1.1 firmware. Magellan said the firmware update that was download a few weeks ago should be deleted from your drive and redownload and try to upgrade it. He said there have been reports of corruption on download of that file.

So, I redownloaded and viola the second unit updated succesfully and no bricked unit that would get stuck on boot up with a spinning clock.

The problem I had are solved the POI search is awesome and everything works fine and I have my QWERTY keyboard.
I gave this bad marks on reliability because of all the hassle but keep trying you'll get a unit that will upgrade now. I paid 87 dollars for a refurb unit and let me tell you even thought this was a hassle to get a unit that would work right was well worth this money. A new one is significantly more and now I have a unit that will update.
