Amazon.com Product Description The 255W features predictive technology that provides faster satellite lock, a redesigned screen with more information, terrain maps, and an exciting new photo navigation feature. The 255W adds complete maps for North America and Text-to-Speech, so you get turn by turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. "turn left in 50 feet at Nebraska Way", rather than merely "turn left in 50 feet"). The 255W also offers a wide 4.3-inch (diagonal) screen that displays 70% more of the road around you. The nüvi 2x5 models all sport the slim design that Garmin introduced with the 200-series last year, so they all fit comfortably in your pocket or purse, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that makes them convenient for navigation by car or foot. All of the models include useful travel tools like a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more.
Important Product Information: This device features a "screen lock" feature. This is a standard feature on all nüvi 2x5 and 7x5 Garmin units. If you slide the "Power" key to the right, it will lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the "Power" key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for "Pedestrian" mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously. For more information, see page 5 of the product manual.

Which nüvi is Best for You?: Click here to see a quick, simple comparison of features for all Garmin nuvi GPS navigators Learn More One of Garmin's key product philosophies is to make extremely complex technology easy to use for anyone right out of the box, and perhaps nowhere is that better exemplified than in the user interface for Garmin's portable navigation devices. Garmin's interface is a key to their success part of what makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with turn-by-turn voice directions, 2-D or 3-D maps and smooth map updates as you navigate. This year, Garmin has redesigned its interface to include much more useful information.

| Your GPS device locks onto transmissions from a dedicated network of Satellites in order to determine its position. Until the device gets a "lock" on three satellites, it can't effectively navigate, so decreasing the time it takes for your device to get "satellite lock" is always a goal of GPS manufacturers. With Garmin's new HotFix technology, your Garmin GPS remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. This gives the device an idea of where it should look for satellites, and dramatically decreases the time it takes for your Garmin to get its position and start navigating. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off. Using Garmin’s unique Web site â Garmin Connect Photos â users can choose from millions of geo-located photos provided by Google’s Panoramio photo sharing community and download them to the nüvi for a richer navigation experience using pictures as a guide.

All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. In most areas, TMC Clear Channel traffic broadcasts are continuous â there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Stutters, totally unuseable. 3 RMAs later got a 265wt. March 16, 2010 Ghezbora First unit stuttered so much it was barely useable. Maps, directions, etc. were all fine, but the voice directions were so broken it was pathetic. The 2nd and 3rd 255ws did the exact same thing. I finally convinced Garmin it was broken on the 3rd RMA and they sent me a 265wt instead. That one works. Save yourself the hassle and don't get this model.
After using for 8 months, conclusion: Awful. March 16, 2010 Christopher Lee (La, Jolla, CA USA) Never before have I been this frustrated with a GPS.
Points that drive me nuts:
* horrendous UI - why the hell would they not have a button that instantly takes you back to the main menu? Sometimes it takes you 4-5 layers of navigation just to get back to the god damn main menu! Even just changing the volume takes you 2-3 layers. Turning on/off traffic rules takes 3-4. Whoever designed the UI was a usability retard.
* Input lag. God awful lag. You can enter characters at about - 1 letter per second. Go any faster, the unit will inconsistently drop parts of your input. And even worse, you DELETE at about the same rate. It's frustrating thinking you precisely deleted the last 2 characters, when actually, the touchscreen registered 4 deletes, and the unit keeps on deleting while you're trying to input again.
* bootup time: takes about a full 30-45 seconds to boot up. Come on Garmin, we're paying $100+. WHY CAN'T THEY SPEND 25 MORE CENTS TO UPGRADE THE CPU!?!?
* splash page. After the unit boots up, there's a disclaimer page warning you not to use the GPS while driving. No way to disable this useless page.
* update speed. awful. If you miss a turn, it'll take about 4 blacks before the unit says "recalculating". On top of that, will take about 5-10 seconds to recalculate, at which point, you've driven far past where the unit is recalculating from. Pretty much, if you miss a turn, you have to immediately park, and wait until the unit reorients itself and recalculate.
* biggest source of frustration. When you first start off, the unit will say "please drive to selected route". It will NOT give you turn by turn directions AND, if you drive off in the opposite direction, the GPS WILL NOT RECALCULATE until it's about 1/3 mile away. This is fairly easy to do if you're driving opposite and parallel to the "selected route" on the screen.
I would not recommend this GPS to anyone. While the unit itself is pretty, functionality-wise, this is one of the worst products I have ever used.
Fits the bill March 15, 2010 H. J. Dawes (Spring Hill, FL) My husband researched GPS systems and felt this was the best buy for the money. So now we both have one for our jobs in home health. I really like it. No frills or fancy stuff, unless you want it. I like that I can save addresses for my clients. No more studying the paper map for how to get around. I love it.
It does everything I wanted it to do and more March 15, 2010 Thalia E. Poulos (ENCINITAS, CA, US) I like the size of the screen. It's easy to use the touch pad for entering addresses. I really like that the voice directions tell me what to expect in the future. Gives me time to plan and know what to expect. Great price too.
Love it love it love it!! March 14, 2010 G. Finner (nebraska USA) I have been wanting a gps for a while now. Did some research and found that this model had everything I needed. I cannot tell you how happy I am with it!!
