4 out of 5 stars incredibly handy, great value   February 28, 2008

This little PC is ideal for someone who wants to be able to work and access the internet on the go. I am a college student, and although there is no way that you could replace a desktop PC with one of these things, it is an ideal way to take documents and other work to all the various places you need to go. The keyboard is very easy to use, the computer is incredibly quiet and it's size is just unbeatable.

Word of advice: Make sure to change to full desktop mode to uncover the true genius of this machine. Although the computer does not come with instructions on how to do this, you should be able to find them online pretty easily.

4 out of 5 stars Great value, but some issues to consider   February 26, 2008

Over all, I'm very happy with this product, and glad I bought it, but you should consider the following points:

a) You really need additional storage. I bought an 8GB SD card.

b) This version of the Eee does not come with an e-mail program. You need to download and install Thunderbird. How to do so is not obvious for someone new to Linux.

c) Once you learn how to go beyond the simplified interface you discover that it comes with a fax program, but this version of the Eee lacks a fax modem. If you need to send faxes, buy the next version up.

TIP If you are confronted with a dialog box that is bigger than the screen you can Alt-drag it so you can see the hidden part of the box.

I received my laptop very quickly. The process was very smooth. I will not hesitate to purchase anything from them in the future. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Great conversation piece   February 23, 2008

The Eee has become a huge part of my daily life since it came in the male. I took it to a computing conference, got lots of questions about it. The Linux distro that comes pre-installed is incredibly easy to learn, though I wish it would have come with the option to make it more like an actual desktop and less like a child's toy. Still - all in all, very easy to use, very light, and fits in my purse!

The only complaints I have are that typing is a tiny bit cramped, so that I often hit enter instead of punctuating when I'm IMing, it's prohibitively difficult to add an application that didn't come pre-installed, and that the battery leaves a little to be desired - but then, for the size, I wasn't expecting more than I got, which is about 2 hours with full screen brightness and wifi enabled. Some web sites do require side-scrolling, but that's a design flaw in those web sites (since a not insignificant portion of the market is still browsing at 800x600 on their home computers), not the Eee itself.

The typing application that comes pre-installed was a big help in learning to use the keyboard - I noticed a big improvement in my keystrokes after just one game!

And speaking of games, the ones that came pre-installed are sufficiently addictive. There's everyone's favorite, Solitaire, which is sufficiently flashy in Linux, and my favorite, Frozen Bubbles (which reminds me a lot of Snood). The other two, Potato Guy and Penguin Racer, don't do much for me, but would probably be attractive to younger users.

If you have a child and are considering giving them a first computer, the 2G model is the one to choose - it comes in colors other than white and black, and has the lowest price, which means that it won't be such a big deal if something gets messed up. Restoring factory default settings is also much easier with the Eee than with a Windows machine - all you have to do is locate the "reset" button and press it with the end of a paper clip.

2 out of 5 stars bad build quality, almost seems more like a toy   February 23, 2008

when we got the eeepc today my 15 year old daughter's first question was if it is a toy computer or a real one. most reviews here feel that $300 is sooooo cheap. actually for what you are getting its not.

PRO: i was kind of impressed about the way linux was implemented on this little machine. the small display is actually not bad, bright and sharp. has just about every program you would need on the road already installed, like skype, chat clients, word processing, wlan, games, media players, etc.

CON: the look and especially the feel is somewhat 'cheap'. after only a couple hours, the mouse keys stopped to work as did the tapping function on the keypad. big bummer. the screen and the keyboard is really too small to do any kind of serious work for any length of time.

all my other computers are macs, i might just be totally spoiled by the (usually) excellent apple build quality.

UPDATE: after pondering if i should return this for an exchange or refund i decided to return it. for only $100 more i bought a certified reconditioned dell inspiron 1525 laptop with 15" wxga, 120gb hard drive, etc.
