Snappy! October 10, 2008 Brian Welcker (Seattle, WA) I've been very happy since I replaced my older HP multi-function with the Officejet J6480. It's very fast, has nice output and the wireless connection means my wife complains less about having to spool jobs through my computer.
Good printer, bad software October 7, 2008 J. G, (Silicon Valley) Spent so much time emailing and faxing my representatives the past few weeks, decided I could save time, money, and desk space by replacing my old printer, scanner and fax/modem with an all-in-one. This seemed like a good deal based on CNET and user reviews, so I picked one up, to my dismay. Pros: - all in one: save space, add functionality (copier, fax) - document feeder rocks. No more manually swapping pages for scans - decent print speed. much faster than my old hp 6122 - double sided printing. save trees - wireless networking. print from any computer on your network without requiring a print server. WEP and WAP PSK support. Cons: - Installation process is incredibly painful (see below) - no double-sided scan / copy / fax. Only scans one side, so have to feed manually and/or edit together. :( - Documentation is useless - low ink capacity, at least for the included cartridges. only a few pages printed and already reporting about 10% of the ink cartridge is consumed On the whole, I am glad to have this printer. It adequately meets my needs and increases my value / deskspace ratio by adding faxing and copying in half the desk space. However, it was incredibly painful to install and configure, requiring multiple uninstall / reinstalls, manual configuration of the printer, tweaks to my OS, etc. all for what I would consider a simple XP Home installation. Things I learned from my wireless XP install that may help you: - Do not install off the CD. Download the latest files from HP.com. - Do not follow the installation manual included with the printer. Give the printer a dedicated IP address on your network and configure the wireless networking from the printer control panel. - Disable all your antivirus, firewall, worm protection, etc. during the installation process. - Run the installer and choose to add a network printer, not the USB - Do a custom / manual install, not the easy / automatic, and choose to install the printer, imaging support, ocr, hp solution center, and update manager. - reboot after install - configure your OS firewall, antivirus and other security programs to allow the HP programs to work It is this last step that took me so long to figure out. Big thank you to other reviewers here - I never would have figured this out on my own. If you see any errors about "unable to connect to scanner" or the like, your security software is causing problems. To verify, disable the programs and try again and see the errors go away. I was seeing the Solutions Center not launching, or 2-5 minute hangs when resuming from sleep on my laptop, svchost.exe taking 100% of my CPU, crashes in various OS exes, etc. after installing the HP software. Disabling my security software during install then enabling access in my firewall and Norton Antivirus after install solved all my problems. This was not for the faint of heart. I was ready to give up and return the printer but am glad I finally got it working. Just bought the printer last week and only now have it working cleanly after 5 days. I may update this review as I try more features (fax, etc.)
Good printer, copier, and scanner October 6, 2008 Stephen Larkin (Salem, MA 01915) The Printer works fine, copier is good giving nice bold quality prints, and the scanner is quite exceptional but follow the rules for cleaning to insure best quality scans using isopropynol and a lint rag is best like the professionals use. Water to clean the screen is not advised and may damage the glass,so careful on that. Flat bed for photos may be better for odd sizes; for 81/2 by 11 text it seems the Automatic feed may be better.
Great printer -- but be careful with the installation process if you're running Vista October 5, 2008 Peter F. Purcell (USA) Replaced my wireless printer set up (Linksys Print Server connected to a HP6210) with this printer. Am running Vista and installed the printer drivers using the CD which, I found out later, doesn't contain the latest set of drivers. Install seemed to complete without problems. Used the printer for a few days and started encountering WORDEXE.COM errors when exiting word after printing a document. Based on articles and reviews on line, removed software and downloaded the correct drivers. Still had problems even after 2 weeks of e-mails and 7 hours on the phone with HP Support. They turned me over to MicroSoft who very quickly tried to turn me back to HP. Talked to a number of my friends who provide network and printer support to a variety of fortune 500 companies and they suggested that I might have corrupted registry entries and/or not all the appropriate registry entries were removed when uninstalling the Linksys software (early version of their PrintDriver software that may not have been completely Vista compatible). I was about to give up when I downloaded Free Windows Registry Repair 1.5 from Regsofts.com. With the appropriate caution (backed up registry, etc...), ran it multiple times, reinstalled the HP driver software and everything works perfectly now. This is a great printer -- uses a bit too much ink if you don't set printer defaults to Fast Draft. Scanning to PC and Faxing from PC is simple and can be done by anyone in the family. Be cautious when installing the software as you can end up with a lot of extra HP "bloat ware" on your PC. In the future I will always download the latest drivers from HP when installing and using their hardware. All in all, I would buy the J6480 again -- the wireless feature allows me to remove a number of components from my network and works flawlessly. Hope this helps.
Awesome AIO Printer! I Love It! October 3, 2008 W. McCABE (Elkins Park, PA USA) I have been a fan of HP printers for many years now, and after purchasing and using the Officejet J6480, I feel stronger than ever that HP printers are awesome! The AIO printer does everything promised. I've used it to send faxes, scan receipts for expense reports, and make copies of important documents. But perhaps the two greatest things about it are 1) Being able to print wirelessly from my laptop in another room of the house, and 2) Printing on both sides without having to remove and reload the paper. I realize there are many printers on the market that do all of these things, but I don't know enough about them to comment. All I know is this printer does it without error and without fail! I love it! Thanks HP!
