1 out of 5 stars Kindle Not So Great   September 5, 2008

I bought this gift for my daughter's 17th birthday. The Kindle device had problems with getting a strong signal and was very slow every time I tried to navigate between different screens. Most times, the Kindle device would freeze and lock up. I was able to download books successfully from my Amazon account. The Kindle advertisements bragged about download in less than 1 minute, but actually took closer to 10 minutes. I also attempted to download some books for a 5-year old, but found a traditional book with color and pictures to be much more stimulating for a young child. Also, the selection of books for a 5-year old are not very good. My Kindle is now dead, less than 2 weeks after my daughter opened this for her birthday. I plan to return it for a refund.

2 out of 5 stars Nice, but needs work on the battery   September 5, 2008

Bought it in June and the battery already can't hold a charge. Have not used in much and was out for the month of August. Amazon needs to address this issue. You need to buy extra batteries if you want to use on the go. If you use it by an outlet it is good.

5 out of 5 stars Better Than a Book   September 4, 2008

Delivered to my door yesterday so I've had 24 hours to try it out and I will give my initial impressions.

Intuitively designed, within 15 minutes of opening box my Kindle was up and running and I had downloaded my first book. You will need additional time to master all the features of this devise but, if like me you just want to skip to the Kindle's main purpose then it's easily done.

Time to download my first book from clicking buy to seeing on screen was 15 seconds, I live in metropolitan Southern California and electronic reception is generally excellent.

I opted for the Amazon Visa offer as it saved $100.00. If you already have an Amazon account then the Amazon Visa becomes your default card for Amazon Kindle purchases.

Ergonomically, fit's comfortably in one hand and it's easier to change pages than manually changing book pages. This can be done using either left or right hand so if you like to read in bed as I do its perfect.

My biggest concern was would the Kindle emulate the reading experience that actual books provide?. For me the answer is yes after three hours of reading last night I was completely satisfied, in that, the continuity of reading was maintained just the medium had changed.

Occasionally some words had____additional____spaces around them (as demonstrated in this sentence). I have no idea why, but it occurred maybe 4-5 times in 100 pages. Although, as far as I am concerned this is not an issue.

Photographic reproduction is adequate although not as clear or full as a good reproduction in a book.

So, as I see it, if you buy a lot of popular books new and they have a minimum number of graphical reproductions like photographs, tables or illustrations then this Kindle iteration is for you. This devise can pay for itself, is highly portable,is easy to use and will at some point supplant most books. Looks to me like it's time to jump in.

5 out of 5 stars Love the Kindle!   September 4, 2008

I gave the Kindle as a gift to my father (almost 80 years old & an avid reader), not knowing if he would take to the new technology or not. Yes, I did assist him learning the ropes, but since he has had it, he LOVES it! He takes it all over - swimming pool, travel, cruises, etc. He has ordered several books on his own & really enjoys the larger font sizes & the portability. It was a GREAT gift!
