A Clear Winner! July 11, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
A co-worker let me borrow his for an accident investigation. When I returned to the office, I went straight to the internet, did some research and purchased my own. Lightweight, easy to operate, excellent zoom and a good number of setting to choose from. The photos are fantastic and the video is so incredible. Between photos and video, I went through two 2-Gig memory cards without having to recharge the battery. That, in itself, was amazing. After having to change the rechargable AA batteries (twice) in my wife's Kodak EasyShare C340, before she even filled the 32Mb memory card, I was overly impressed. From distant, to aquarium tunnel, to multiple faces, to the finest flora and fauna details, this Canon PowerShot SD850 IS 8.0 MP Digital Elph Camera is a clear winner. Very possibly the last camera I'll ever buy.
Canon Poershot SD850 July 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am extremely pleased with the quality of the images taken with this camera, as well as all of the "bells and whistles special features. I am not happy with the on and off power switch. It is hard to operate.
great little camera! July 10, 2008 I already owned a Canon Powershot S50, so I was biased towards getting another Canon. The SD850 Elph is a perfect little carry-around camera for vacations and everyday use. It is really light, has a huge LCD, and if you already know the weird Canon menus, then it will be easy to use advanced features. The macro mode (for super close-ups) is incredible.
The Canon SW is not very good, so I suggest Photoshop Elements for any serious editing. Also, it comes with a worthless 32MB memory card, which is good for 6 pictures (!). I got the A-Data Turbo 16 GB SDHC card for about $80 and it works great, and way faster than my old S50. Now I have room for 4496 pictures (at max res). The battery seems to last a long time as well.
Like the small size July 10, 2008 This camera replaced another digital Canon that I had purchased about 5 or 6 years ago. I wanted a smaller camera that I could put into my purse. But I also wanted a viewfinder. This model has everything I need. I love the size of the LCD screen. I haven't had a chance to take a lot of pictures but what I have taken has come out very well. The reason I'm not rating it with 5 stars is that I have had problems with the software installation of ZoomBrowser EX against the previously installed version. So I have not been able to download my pictures from the camera using the new installation of ZoomBrowser. I have not had a chance to call Canon Customer Support to work through the issues.
Takes great pictures ... but beware the "Lens Error"!!! July 9, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a very nice little camera with a lot of easy to use features, and takes very, very nice pictures for the size and price.
But buyer beware ... within just two weeks of buying this camera, it unexpectedly stopped working ... the lens cover would not open and the display simply said "Lens Error Restart Camera". Nothing would solve this problem, and the camera was completely non functional. This happened after only two weeks of use, and I did not mistreat the camera in any way in those two weeks.
Kudos to Amazon on their excellent customer service. They replaced the camera with no questions asked and made it very easy to return the defective one.
However, I am nervous and wondering just when the replacement is going to have the same issue. Google this camera and you'll find several other consumers have had the same issue, and Canon has been very reluctant to solve it.
