Near Perfect on DX or FX August 8, 2008 This is the dogz bollox when it comes to sharpness, contrast, colour rendition and clarity. Spend the money, don't whine about the weight and be amazed at the pictures you will produce.
Expensive but look what it does July 28, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
$1550 for a lens with a 10mm range?
Yes, and worth it.
First, if you use this on a combination of FX and DX bodies, you have a range of 14 to 36 mm. You cover every wide angle prime -- 14mm, 18mm, 20mm, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, in one package. Not bad. Add the fact that the ISO 6400 on the FX Nikon bodies is fantastic and there's no need for 1.4 or 2.0 max apertures, you got a very versatile package in this lens.
But even if you couldn't get 14-36 coverage, this lens would be worth the dough because it is so sharp. The first time I opened a group shot done with this lens I was blown away by the detail and sharpness. I have never seen this kind of quality out of a Nikon lens, and I own a lot of them. It is great. Colors are saturated, flare well controlled and the lens handles very nicely. I've used it in low light and the 2.8 shots are as good as the f/8 shots. A fantastic lens; wish I had the money to buy its cousin, the 24-70, but I have to content with the 28-70 for now.
If you can afford only one Nikon wide angle lens, make it this one.
Phenomenal WA Lens for Nikon DSLR July 20, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Gorgeous super sharp WA lens. Sharp corner to corner, at wide open aperture, at entire zoom range. The color is just pop. It is better than my AFS 17-35 (sharp only in the center, at wide open, need to stop down for sharper entire frame).
At 1st, I kind of reluctant to try it since I have 17-35 already. But after I tried it, holly smokes, I MUST to have it. It is has kind of quality that I cannot get from 17-35. The color and bokeh is just way more pleasing to my eyes. It makes D300 shows its capability in WA department.
NO filter ring is the only my draw back. I guess I have to make my own custom Lee filter holder myself. The IQ of this lens is very hard to resist. It is worth the price.
Flare is a problem, but it can be controlled easily with your technique. Most WA lenses have flare problem. I think this lens has the least.
I am not a WA guy, but after owning this lens I start to take panoramic photos. For weddings, this lens is an absolutely must use lens.
If you need real High Quality WA lens, this IS THE LENS.
BTW, that bulbous almost protruding lens shape looks sexy, attracts quite a lot of interest at several parties. It is not fish eye lens, as many thought.
Nikon 14-24 lens -- superb quality July 17, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
amazing quality lens. Will give you a workout when mounted on a D3 as it is no small lens, but the images it can capture are amazing.
Great optics but not a good choice unless you have a specific need and are a pro. June 29, 2008 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
This lens is extremely heavy. If you are not a professional photographer and want to carry a lens into the field for landscape shooting I recommend the Af-S Nikkor 12-24mm 1:4G ED. It isn't as superb a lens but it is much lighter and more portable. I returned this lens because I could not handle that much extra weight when traveling. This lens however will work on a full frame camera. So if you own a D3 and are a pro (I am not) this may be a great choice for you. Or if you shoot film and you don't care about the weight this is a good choice because you will be able to use it on you film camera bodies.
