I was given this as a gift and now had it a couple of months.
So far, I'm really liking it, nice and easy to use, works well, very quick but there are a few niggles that stop it getting 5 stars.
Cons -
No SD slot, so unable to add extra maps and because the US/Canada/Mexico maps aren't segmented, you can't delete sections of maps to make room for EU maps if you were going on holiday.
Initial map update that you get free, took almost an hour to install, downloading was really quick...subsequent mini updates are quick and great though
Map button, it's a little down the list in the UI so not exactly quick to check the map in a hurry
POI's, to get info on the POI's, you've got to be on the map view rather than the street view, so not so great to get info if your on the move or in a rush
No back button in the UI, nor is there a cancel button so just a few extra clicks to get around if you change your mind on a setting or location which is a little annoying.
One way roads, it knows which are one way roads, but does not always clearly show them on the map if you were browsing around which would be a nice feature
Pluses-
Very quick to find a satellite signal, generally it is instant or within 30 seconds. The longest it has taken was 4 minutes in bad weather at night and only one other time it has taken a minute to find a signal, much better than my previous Magellan Roadmate.
Recalculating route is very quick but you don't get a text list of directions if you lose a signal or make a wrong direction in a tunnel
While in a tunnel, it generally shows where on the map you should be based on the speed you were going which works great, except if there is a turn in the middle of a tunnel, the road image of the turn doesn't go away so you can miss a follow up turn in a tunnel.
POI's, loads of them and regularly updated as well as being able to add your own or get a list from other people
Map fixes, easy to do your own fixes if things are incorrect
Battery life is quite good if you were to take it for a walk and the ability to route walking/cycling routes is nice
Holder is good, has good suction, but I thoroughly recommend a beanbag base to stick it to, makes it easy to dismount and have better reach to the unit instead of hanging from the windscreen
Night view really helps reduce eye strain
Adaptive volume is nice if your on the motorway
I've used this to get around Boston and so far have no problems getting around very built up areas with very tricky road ways and it also works nicely on weird back roads in the burbs. I would also recommend getting the mains adapter to charge it up quicker when on the go as well as a case to keep it in when on foot.

This is my 3rd Tom Tom and i always buy them refurbished beacuse they look and work new (Comes with a 6 month warranty) ! I got the unit out of its box and immediately hooked it up to my computer. After a few seconds the unit started and connection was made ( if you never had a tom tom unit, it will download the software for you) i immediately clicked on "latest map guarantee" and it told me that there was a new map available and it was free for me to download ! It took me afew hours to do the download and get the new map and now i have a brand new map in my refurb unit :) I turned the unit on when i was in the car for the first time and it took 5 seconds for the unit to find where we were !
The screen is very big so it is very easy to enter address and do the settings. The lane assist feature is great now i know where to stay on the highway and never miss a turn. I used it under the train tracks( Bronx NY) and just like my older tom tom never lost any signal and kept up with my speed and turns. IQ routes are great it knows where there will be traffic (gets this info from mapshare not live traffic but uses historical data) and suggests other routes for you to take. Map share is great so even if your map gets old you still get updates from other drivers so it is like getting free maps everytime you hook the unit up to your computer.

So far I've found the XL 340s easy to use and the directions are accurate.
The only things I wish I would have known about the refurbished unit:
1. According to the materials in the box, you cannot return the GPS to Amazon, but rather you have to call the service number if you have issues.
2. Mine came with 6 month old maps (not a big deal to me) and it would cost $77 to get updated ones (it requires you to sign up for 12 months of map upgrades to get the new ones).
Other than that, mine is cosmetically perfect and seems to work great. It's definitely worth the $99.

I ordered a refurbished model of this GPS. All appeared to be brand new except the window mount and it was only a little dusty. Works great and includes all accessories.
This model has every feature I could ever want and more. It has spoken turn by turn with street names, a wider screen than my older (lost) TomTom. It will route around traffic and gives freeway views with lanes and signs so you are not trying to figure out where to go in big cities when there are mulitple exits. Of course it has all the usual extras like points of interest, etc.
I can't wait for a long trip so that I can really put this to good use.
