Touch the color screen to easily look up addresses and services and get voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions that speak street names to your destination. It comes preloaded with detailed City Navigator NT street maps, nearly 6 million points of interest (POIs), 2-D or 3-D maps and the speed limit for most major roads. Its digital elevation maps show you shaded contours at higher zoom levels, giving you a big picture of the surrounding terrain. With the 1490T's enhanced user interface, you can slide your finger to conveniently scroll between screens. You can also upload custom points of interest (POIs). And with HotFix satellite prediction, nüvi calculates your position faster to get you there quicker.

Receive Free Traffic Alerts
Steer clear of traffic with nüvi 1490T's integrated FM traffic receiver and free lifetime* traffic updates. Receive alerts about traffic delays and road construction that lie ahead on your route. Next, simply touch nüvi's screen to view traffic details or detour around the problem area. Watch informational video

Lifetime traffic extends for the useful life of your Garmin traffic receiver (as long as you own a compatible Garmin GPS) or as long as Garmin receives traffic data from its traffic supplier, whichever is shorter.

Go Beyond Navigation
Navigation is just the beginning. nüvi 1490T saves you gas and money with ecoRoute--a green feature that calculates the most fuel-efficient route, tracks fuel usage and more. The 1490T includes many travel tools including JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. With photo navigation, you can download pictures from Garmin Connect Photos and navigate to them. It's also compatible with MSN Direct (receiver purchase and subscription required). With its "Where Am I?" emergency locator, you always know your location. Simply tap the screen to get your exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and fuel stations. The 1490T features Garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature, and is compatible with our free Garmin Garage where you can download custom voices and vehicles. Enhance your travel experience with optional plug-in microSD cards.

What's in the Box
nüvi 1490T, Preloaded City Navigator NT for North America, Lifetime traffic, FM traffic receiver with vehicle power cable, Vehicle suction cup mount, USB cable, Dashboard disc, Quick start manual

NOTE: The initial setup is crucial when first using your nüvi - it allows the device to find and sync with satellites. The startup screen will allow you to skip through this section but doing so could cause your nüvi to have difficulty working the way it should. Without completing this important step, your nüvi may default back to the location of Kansas City each time it is turned off and on again, not saving your settings. It also may not be able to pick up the satellite properly.

Which nüvi is Best for You?

Note: All nüvis come with detailed NAVTEQ maps containing more than 6 million pre-loaded point of interest locations.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Garmin GPS ever   March 10, 2010
ganesh usha (CA)

This is the worst GPS I ever had. So far I only used garmin starting from streetpilot to nuvis.

pros:
-large display
-free traffic
-good signal reception (locks to satellites fast)

cons:
-poor lane assist, often times shows way too early and disappears too quickly
-traffic information takes too long to show up
-sometimes suddenly changes to a different location and doesn't recognize where you are
-menu navigation is bad. you need to tap the back button all the way many times to go back to the main menu
-completely buggy and finally died half way on my trip

Now I bought another garmin hoping that the fault is only on this specific model. I, however, bought a tomtom just in case if it fails half way.

4 out of 5 stars I'm Happy With My 1490T   March 7, 2010

I don't understand all of the complaints about this GPS. I was a little nervous about buying it after reading many of the bad reviews, but did anyway, due to Garmin's reputation and the Great Price on Amazon. It basically had all of the features I wanted.

I replaced a Street Pilot that was stolen out of my car and have been very pleased with the 1490T. I travel four states for a living and have had it now for about two months, so I have used it quite a bit. It is very easy to use and the larger screen is a real plus. The only problem I have had, is that it did lock up on me once, for some reason, but it has never happened again. My only complaint is that the map detail is considerably less than my old Street Pilot. That's why I gave it a 4 Star and not a 5 Star. By the same token, if I had not had the Street Pilot, with great detail, I wouldn't miss it. I will say that the screen is not nearly as cluttered. I have not used the Bluetooth, because I already have a Bluetooth Speaker Phone for my Blackberry.

Overall I think I made a good choice. I would recommend this GPS to anyone !

1 out of 5 stars Beware, maps are a year old!!   March 5, 2010

I just received my unit. When I registered it online with Garmin I discovered that the maps are from April 2009, almost a year old. The Garmin website promises that if you register your new Nuvi and a new map is available within 60 days of purchase it will be free. I pasted their guarantee below.

When I registered I am only offered the option of purchasing new maps. Perhaps since these are refurbished they are not "new" per Garmin. They are closed after 5 on Friday so I can't get an answer from them. I am extremely unhappy as I have a trip planned for next week. BUYER BEWARE!

1 out of 5 stars Garmin junk - Stay away   March 3, 2010
Had it with Garmin (Dallas, TX)
0 out of 2 found this review helpful

I would suggest you stay away from Garmin GPS units. They are totally unreliable and customer service is terrible. I purchased a 1490T in August 09 and it started shutting itself off repeatedly about a month later. Once it shuts itself off, it's very difficult to turn back on. I did a firmware upgrade that did nothing but erase my address book. Calling customer service to ask for warranty work is a joke. I called a dozen times at different times of day and have had to hang up every time after 30 minutes of waiting. This is my second Garmin unit. The first one was a 350 Nuvi that quit working after 18 months. I will never purchase any Garmin product again. I finnally purchased another company's GPS unit that works well. Garmin should be ashamed of themselves for putting such garbage in the market.

2 out of 5 stars poor performance, terribly unreliable   February 28, 2010
Phil (California)
I purchased my first garmin nuvi 1490 in November from Costco. I liked the lane assist, the traffic function, and the wide screen. The touchscreen wasn't as fast to respond to typing in an address as my apple I-phone but it was functional. The blue tooth was loud and clear, however if your cell phone volume is turned up and the navigation system was on 20% the phone call was great, but as soon as you disconnected, the navigation volume didn't recognize the change and the next time a turn was announced it was at full volume. The 1490 system worked fine for about 2 months, then one morning I got in my car and the navigation wouldn't turn on. It said loading maps, like it always did for a few seconds, but this time the navigation didn't boot up. I tried for an hour to turn it on. Then I returned it to costco. I returned it for another nuvi 1490 and on Thursday as I was driving around downtown Los Angles the screen turned off... It was plugged in, all the connections were connected, one second it was on, and the next second it was off. There is some glitch with this nuvi that in my opinion makes it totally unreliable. I would not reccomend this model.
