Amazon.com Product Description Amazon.com Product Description This is a refurbished GPS. Refurbished generally means that the unit has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the navigator back to like new conditions. Some GPS may contain cosmetic blemishes.
Garmin's nüvi 265WT improves upon its 200-series predecessors by adding free real-time traffic updates from Navteq (for the life of the device) as well as Bluetooth connectivity to your cell phone. Other significant improvements in the 2x5 series include a predictive technology that provides faster satellite lock, a redesigned screen with more information, terrain maps, and an exciting new photo navigation feature. The 265WT provides complete maps for North America and the handy Text-to-Speech feature, so you get turn-by-turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. "turn left in 50 feet at Nebraska Way", rather than merely "turn left in 50 feet"). The nüvi 2x5 models all sport the slim design that Garmin introduced with the 200-series last year, so they all fit comfortably in your pocket or purse, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that makes them convenient for navigation by car or foot. All of the models include useful travel tools like a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. The 265WT also offers a wide 4.3-inch (diagonal) screen that displays 70% more of the road around you. Integrated Traffic Receiver Steer clear of traffic with an integrated GTM 20 FM traffic receiver designed to receive alerts about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. No subscriptions or additional hardware needed. Just open the box, turn it on, and get instant access to traffic information--the traffic updates are free for the life of the device. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time. In most areas, the traffic broadcasts are continuous--there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions. Hands-Free Calling In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. WIth Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker, you can match your nüvi to any Bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the nüvi's touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Making and taking calls on the road has never been easier, or safer. In addition, Garmin makes it a breeze to look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or even tap into your cell phone's call history log. Which nüvi is Best for You?: Click here to see a quick, simple comparison of features for all Garmin nuvi GPS navigators Learn More One of Garmin's key product philosophies is to make extremely complex technology easy to use for anyone right out of the box, and perhaps nowhere is that better exemplified than in the user interface for Garmin's portable navigation devices. Garmin's interface is a key to their success part of what makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with turn-by-turn voice directions, 2-D or 3-D maps and smooth map updates as you navigate. This year, Garmin has redesigned its interface to include much more useful information.
| Old Interface | New Interface
|
| Your GPS device locks onto transmissions from a dedicated network of Satellites in order to determine its position. Until the device gets a "lock" on three satellites, it can't effectively navigate, so decreasing the time it takes for your device to get "satellite lock" is always a goal of GPS manufacturers. With Garmin's new HotFix technology, your Garmin GPS remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. This gives the device an idea of where it should look for satellites, and dramatically decreases the time it takes for your Garmin to get its position and start navigating. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off. Using Garmin’s unique Web site â Garmin Connect Photos â users can choose from millions of geo-located photos provided by Google’s Panoramio photo sharing community and download them to the nüvi for a richer navigation experience using pictures as a guide.

happy with it March 15, 2010 A. Malik (Arlington, VA United States) My refurbished unit showed up in the regular packaging and looked new. I didn't have any trouble registering the unit online or updating the maps--did not need to call Garmin support. But the updating was a multi-hour process, in part because of my slowish internet connection.
I haven't used Bluetooth, but the unit otherwise worked as advertised. I found the routing alogrithm to be superior to my old Garmin 660, recalculation of routes was much faster, and obtaining a satellite fix was also much faster, as was searching the POI database.
No problems with quality/volume of voice directions. The new interface, which shows upcoming turns on the screen, is a welcome innovation. All in all, excellent value for money.
A good GPS March 13, 2010 Stefan Eskandari (Irvine, CA) I lost my 3 year old Garmin Nuvi660 ($740). Needed a replacement, without cleaning my bank account. I really wanted Blue-tooth feature for hands-free use of cell phones, and Nuvi 265 fit the bill. I bought refurbished to save a few more Bucks. The unit looked like new but it didn't come with case as a new one would. If you try to register it through Garmin's web site, it would come back as it was already registered (refurbished!, remember?)! I haven't bothered but I hear you can call and get it done, but it is a lengthy process. A couple of times the unit has dumped all my data and addresses and gone back to bare bone factory settings after being charged with a wall unit.
The data input (same with Nuvi 660) is not complicated but NOT user friendly. If you type an address in and want to go back to menu page, you have to hit "back" button 10 times. You can NOT save addresses a a particular category, without saving them in "favorites" and then editing them individually and changing their category.
The GPS itself works as advertised, Map data is good, Blue-tooth works fine, and the traffic feature is terrific!

Cool GPS March 7, 2010 J. Kuenzie (Columbia, SC, US) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bought this to replace a Nuvi 200, instead of updating the maps in that unit. This has Bluetooth, which works great with my phone. Love the choice of icons available through the Garmin Garage. And I've used the Garmin studio feature to load my own voice. One note for buyers: The unit I received has a 265w label, but it becomes the 265wt model because of the power cord.
Good product but be prepared for a refurb unit March 5, 2010 JW (tx usa) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
First, this review is specific for the refurbished 265WT unit, not for a new one.
In general, the GPS unit is good. The software layout and everything is very logical and easy to use. Much better than a Mxxxx unit which I bought at Costco and returned because the user interface is a mess. Not for this unit - you almost don't need the manual to get started with the basic GPS function to get you from point A to B. It is that easy.
I would recommend the Garmin GPS, no doubt, but how about a refurbished one (or "newly overhauled" as Garmin calls it)?
The good:
The hardware refurbishing process is pretty thorough: of course you don't get a pretty new box with picture, foam...but still a box with everything stuff in it. Overall the package is adequate. The unit is clean and protected with bubble wrap bag inside the box. A plastic film is also found on the screen for scratch protection. There is no sign of previous use. New cable, new suction cup mount... the whole deal. The unit is also charged previously with ~3/4 power left when I received. Overall I was very pleased when I open the box.
The bad:
The other part of the refurbishing process is not so good, though. It seems they reset all settings to the original, but forget to delete the previous owner's info. I can see the previous owner's POI and home address, as well as his/her trip record and I have to manually delete everything. This is not a good thing... so if you ever need to return a unit, remember to erase all your personal items. I don't know about other mfr but at least Garmin won't clean it up for you.
The UGLY:
It is also part of my own fault trying to save $50 on a refurb unit. The biggest problem is about their "nüMaps Guarantee". According to their web "The nuMaps Guarantee program allows customers who have purchased a new* nuvi or a new zumo device to update the map in the unit free of charge.... *Refurbished or newly overhauled devices may also be applicable". However, after I register the device and ready to get your free map update, I only found the unit has been registered to the previous owner and is no longer eligible for the one time map update. Well, there are a few other reviewers mentioned about this and I did not pay too much attention to it and only thought: a phone call should clear the issue right up and save me $50, why not? WRONG! I did call Garmin to resolve this but only found Garmin's business practice is really bad! IMO they should reset everything like a new unit (including previous registration, map...etc) to begin with, or at least give it a new SN or product ID to get a fresh new start. It would be a much easier, cleaner and more efficient practice. Bad. Even they did not do that, Garmin should make this process as easy as possible with their support staff. In my experience, first the support person wasn't sure if a refurb unit qualify or not until I pointed it out in their support document, then he needs to verify with his supervisor. After that issue was clarified, they requested a copy of my purchase receipt from Amazon as a proof that I did not buy it from market place (as a used unit). After I email the receipt to them and they reset the registration info, I still can't get the map update. A few emails back and forth then I finally realized that the product SN and registration is a separate process from free map update. For the free map update will take additional time pending for "a supervisor approval". In general the support staff is friendly and responsive, but the whole process is frustrating.
You may experience something more pleasant than mine but If you ask me again, I'd buy a new unit instead.
Note, eventually I got the free new map update, but the map downloading process is extremely slow. I have really high band width but still took a good 1/2 hour for a 2.4MB file...
