1 out of 5 stars AIR RESEARCH INTERNET RADIO AR ARIR200   March 18, 2010

I am perhaps overly sensitive, since I have been spoiled by owning equipment producing very high quality sound. This radio is specifically deficient in the base region, giving it a "metallic" sound. I also found it annoying that it occasionally pauses (buffering?).

1 out of 5 stars Great Features but Fatal Design Flaw for Use in Wireless Networks   March 4, 2010

This is almost an excellent and outstanding radio. It has a fatal design flaw that makes it very awkward and a nuisance to use in a secure (e.g. WPA or WEP) wireless network.

The great:

It really is an attractively-designed unit. Except as noted below, it set up fairly easily. It has very good sound quality, although obviously not audiophile level. For the couple of days that we owned it, it provided stutter-free clean sound. Choosing stations is fairly easy from its menu system. Its complimentary weather connection is useful and it even displays the temperature in your zip code on the display. I really like all aspects of the radio except for below.

The fatal design flaw:

For WPA wireless networks the radio can accept up to a 36-character WPA key. (Note - the WPA standard allows up to 63 characters so you may have to shorten your key so it is compatible with this radio. If you do this, change the key on the router and ALL computers and other devices connected to the wireless network.)

BUT THE REAL FLAW: The radio forgets the WPA encryption key if AC power is disconnected for even an instant. The key must be re-entered to reconnect to the wireless network. This is true even if the three AAA batteries are installed since the batteries just back up the display and the alarms. For me this is unacceptable. Entering the key is tedious. To do this every time power is disconnected or lost for even an instant is unacceptable.

I assume although do not know for sure that the same is true for WEP keys.

I called Acoustic Research. They say it is a design choice to enhance security. If the radio is removed or stolen, it will not have the key so it cannot be used to gain access to your wireless network. OK but that seems irrelevant. The radio can be told to completely erase its memory. And if it were stolen, you can change the key in your wireless network. This is better than having to re-enter the key every time there is a hit on the AC power. So for me this radio gets returned.

I am replacing it with a Logitech Squeezebox Radio. Logitech says that both the Radio Logitech Squeezebox Radio and the Boom Logitech Squeezebox Boom All-in-One Network Music Player / Wi-Fi Internet Radio retain the network ID (SSID) and key so long as your router is set to broadcast its SSID. If the router does not broadcast its SSID then the radio will assume it has been moved and not retain the SSID and key.

2 out of 5 stars NOT WORTH EVEN THE DISCOUNTED PRICE   February 24, 2010

The manual does not match the current programming. Not easy to switch between modes. Lots of delays between modes. I had a strong signal from my wireless network but getting into any of my selected stations did not work. Kept getting server errors. Save your time and spend a bit more.

4 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE THIRD ONE I HAVE BOUGHT   January 21, 2010

This is the third internet radio of this type that I have bought
We love classical music but can not get a wide variety locally.

This one was for my wife in the kitchen.

I had it working within about one half hour out of the box.

The internet progamming option did not seem to work right away so I programmed
our four favorite classical stations by hand.

It has been working fine every since.

While I have three of these the brand names on them differ. Two are RCA and one is AR
I read someplace they are all the same and the seem to be.

This unit is OK at best. I can only get a few internet radio stations and they arent that great. Every now and then an alert, with sound will just come out of the speakers and I have to fumble around to turn it off. The buttons are very slick and I often press the wrong one when navigating and its slow to respond. Sound is OK.
