Panasonic products are generally great, so maybe this particular one was just a lemon. It worked for about a week. Never great. Slow response.
At first wouldn't get the HD channels it said it would. Then, after a call to support and running it through setup again, it did.
Then after only a week of use it turned itself off (the display plaintively said "BYE") and that was that. It wouldn't turn back on. It would make noise, then shut itself off again. Kind of sad, really.
Now--to Amazon's credit, returns are very easy. Go online, select the item, print out a UPS return form. They call UPS, UPS picks it up and returns it. You don't have to schlep to the post office and pay postage.
So hooray for Amazon, and too bad about this unit.

Got this to because a Panasonic DMRES30V VCR DVD recorder I purchased in November, 2005 which I used as a work horse recorder, bit the dust.
I actually replaced the DMRES30V with a DMRES35VPS and replaced the 35VPS with the DME-EZ48VK which was easy to install and line up since it is similiar to my other Panasonic models.
It is in a stack which presently records TV programs mainly on tape and If I choose to keep the recordings, then I re-record on DVD minus the commercials.
I choose not to do direct VHS to DVD transfers on one machine because I find the machines have a higher breakdown rate and this includes all makes and models.
One very definite plus is the power cord disconnects from the unit and when setting in a new machine, the power cord simply re-attaches to the new unit without having to go to the wall plug.
I had been using Panasonic VCR's for about 15 to 20 years and am well pleased with their products.

I wanted to replace my old Toshiba with a new dvd recorder and after reading all the reviews I selected the Panasonic DMR-EZ 48V. I have alot of cons about this product. It doesn't work with the upper HD channels through my HD Cable Box my main problem). It is good only if you work with an antanae.
No matter what, it was looking for a dvd or vhs, no way to control it, it wouldn't go to just the TV. It also had a very annoying habit of giving me a really really grainy picture.There was a note about going to a local PBS channel, there aren't any here.
No Energy Star.
It set all the lower channels but not the upper. I reinstalled my old Toshiba that works wiothout headaches. Bottom line I hated the Panasonic.

I bought one of these about a year ago to replace a Toshiba DVR that only lasted 6 months. I was pretty happy since there weren't many DVRs with digital tuners at that time. My Panasonic stereo and Plasma TV are fabulous. But the unit broke within 1 hour of startup. I was discouraged to say the least, but it was cheerfully replaced immediately. I was favorably impressed with No 2, which worked very well for 10 months or so. Then it stopped working. Very nice machine when it works, but reliability sucks. Too much $$$ for less than one year of use (I have a SONY Beta machine that still works!).

I purchased the Panasonic DMR-EZ48V VCR/DVD combo based on Panasonic's usually good reviews from sources such as Consumer Reports. But I am somewhat disappointed in this unit. I have three concerns:
1. I have a standard aspect television (4:3 aspect ratio). When I view a program (either live or recorded) which was broadcast in widescreen television (16:9 aspect ratio), the Panasonic unit shrinks the picture considerably on my standard aspect television. At first I thought this might have been unavoidable. But I also have one of the inexpensive DTV converter boxes made by Zenith. I get a much better (larger) picture with the inexpensive ($20 after the goverment rebate) Zenith unit than I do with the much more expensive Panasonic unit.
2. When scrolling (surfing) through channels on the Panasonic unit, it takes an inordinate amount of time to move between channels.
3. In a fairly short period of time, the Panasonic unit has locked-up twice when I have tried to erase a progam which I previously recorded on the DVD recorder.
All three of the problems above are tolerable. In other words, I will NOT go out and buy another VCR/DVD unit. On the other hand, had I known about these problems in advance, I would have check-out manufacturers other than Panasonic.
