Not an IPOD/Zune Replacement September 16, 2008 David T. Webster (Jacksonville, FL) Being in the navy and having limited storage and range of motion in your living quarters, this device is great. WIFI works great, transfer of music, video (whatever) is easy as drag and drop. I don't recommend this player as a music player only. It doesn't remember what song you were on (like the IPOD or Zune) if you turn it off or put it into standby. Touchscreen is awsome and you can put your favorite picture on the wallpaper just like on your computer screen. You need to get the "OPERA" Internet stuff seperately. I bought this used on Amazon, so I got it cheaper with that stuff included. Make sure you read the contents of what's included. The 705 looks nice too. Its bigger, seach YOUTUBE for video reviews on these items, I did my research, I ended up have this and an IPOD, they aren't meant to be the same kind of device.
The Perfect Beast.... September 12, 2008 Frederick P. Barnes (Greenwood, SC USA) I took off one star for the frequent resets needed while using WIFI. Another star off because of the crummy battery. I am on my second 605, the first being defective (battery). Pros: 1 Great screen, and it's a touch screen. 2 Good sound. Not loud but clear. 3 Lotsa accessories available. 4 Fairly user friendly. 5 Web Radio/TV plugin satisfactory. 6 Dish Network plugin great. 7 Choice of touch screen or buttons. 8 80gb! CONS: 1 Really bad battery quality. On a full charge it should run four hours straight on video. If it does not, return or exchange it. 2 Occasional hardware resets needed in normal use. If you use WIFI, you will be doing a LOT of resets. 3 Browser plugin not so hot. Will not do my favorite internet radio site "Pandora". 4 You can use music from "Rhapsody to Go", but it will not stream from Rhapsody uPnP server (WIFI). 5 Questional reliability. Some places on the net say 25% failure rate. 6 A BIGGY: Customer support is "junk". Useless. Don't expect any help. 7 Use of uPnp servers erratic. Sometimes it does not see them. 8 You can use various music software to load the 605, but most of them mess things up in some way...avoid software like this. Use hard drive mode and Windows Explorer. 9 Sound is great, but just a bit bright. 10 For full functionality you have to shell out mucho bucks to buy plugins. 11 If you exchange defective unit, it's a real pain trying to get plugins transferred to new machine. No problem with free Dish Plugin. 12 Long battery charge time. 8 hours or over with USB connection... connect directly to computer, do NOT use USB hub. 13 The 605 draws a lot of current. When loading LARGE amounts of data the 605 battery can go dead in the middle of it because it draws battery power as well as USB power during connection to PC when transferring data (using the 605 hard drive). Although the 605 is not ready for prime time, I still love it. If only there were not so many "CONS". Don't expect much, like firmware updates, since Archos has released its new line of "media tablets". Do a lot of online research about this product before buying it. BUY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY WITH THIS PRODUCT!!!!!!!!!!! A good headphone amp REALLY makes the 605 shine. The mini battery dock with charger is an ESSENTIAL accessory. Fast charging time. My system: Archos 605 WIFI Headroom Total Airhead headphone amp. Sennheiser HD580 headphones.
Nice device, but hold off for the newer models. September 9, 2008 Jason Harrell (Pittsburgh, PA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I will start by saying it has been several months since I bought this Media Player. I'll give a list of some pros and cons and let you decide what you think of them. As with any electronic device, there are both pros and cons. Cons: By now most people know that for this player, you must purchase additional plug-ins to view some videos and to browse with the Opera browser. I have read many reviews about the short battery life per charge. This is true when using the screen often. You can adjust things to make it last a little while longer, but if you watch a movie, or browse the internet, I would recommend getting the mini dock for additional juice. You can watch an entire movie plus some additional time, but don't plan on watching 2 or 3 full length movies on one charge, unless it is docked to the DVR station, or has the additional battery adapter. As with most Wifi products, internet browsing is slow. Also, as trivial as it may sound, there is no holder for the stylus. Sure you can use your finger, but sometimes it seems you need the stylus for better response for the touch screen. Pros: Great size and quality for viewing pictures and watching movies and browsing the web. The touch screen works very well with only a few hiccups here and there. The side buttons are nice to have at times when the touchscreen is not cooperating. The speaker comes in handy when you want to play something for others, or just to have background music. Every video I've loaded has played on my player, as I bought the plug-in. Watching Youtube clips on this is very nice. Sometimes it takes a while to load, but once it does, it is great. The 160 Gig drive is a must for keeping lots of movies, pictures, music, and files. If you can afford it, get this larger drive. You will regret it when the lower capacity drives fill up. So yes, this is a nice product overall in my opinion. It has only locked up on me a few times since I've had it, but I keep a handy paper clip in my wallet to push into the hole which resets it. Movies look very nice on this, however, I think they look better on my Creative Zen Vision:M player, but that screen is much smaller. The picture is still very nice though. Transferring files is fairly fast with the USB 2.0 connection. I also bought the Mini Dock and the DVR station. I wanted the MiniDock for the extra battery life, as well as a very portable charger.(charge time varies, but seems to fully charge in about 2 hours. Just a guess) I bought the DVR station(which also charges the device) so that I can record my own shows easily, and it also has video ports to watch the movies and such on a TV. It isn't high def, but it is still cool to be able to watch what you want on the go and share with friends and family. Do I recommend this to someone considering it? Well, I can only tell you that the only regret I have about buy this 605 Wifi is that just a few months later, the new series was lined up for release. I think they look so nice, and they do everything this does, and more, in a nice new sleek package. The one version will have 3.5G for internet anywhere, which would be nice also, so that you don't have to rely on a stationary Wifi connection. But for what the 605 Wifi has, it is a great device which has provided me with numerous hours of entertainment on my train rides to work. ***Also, I purchased the Noreve leather case for the 605, and I love it. As a bonus, this case has a slot for the Stylus inside. Kinda looks like a ladies wallet, but once you get passed that and understand that you paid good money for the 605 Wifi, you want it protected from damage. I don't have any problems with the buttons not fitting in the case. And it is easy to slide in and out of for DVR station usage.
Amazing Archos Device - 605 WiFi September 8, 2008 R. Hernandez (Hamilton, NJ) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This device known as the 5th Generation 605 WiFi is amazing. Before I begin on the Positive note, lets talk about what I didn't like. Wifi access is limited to an open shared source ex.(Starbucks or Hotels). I didn't have luck at all connecting to a wifi device with enhanced security enabled. Also the internet interface (Opera) lacks the activeX ability I was hoping for. Lastly the Battery takes too long to Charge, coming in at a wopping 8 hrs via usb or 4 hrs from a wall outlet. Once you tackle these hurdles your Golden! This little puppy is amazing! Internet connectivity is relatively fast, the screen resolution is beautiful and very sharp. The layout of the buttons and the overall feel is just right. They got the sound right too it is smooth and crisp. A new feature is the Content Portal which still seems to be in development but has great potential, Love the concept. Widgets are plentiful for that personal touch and the menu and settings are very detailed. Adjustments range from alarm clock to parental control, appearance and tv control. I hope this description doesn't sound all business, because this device is a lot of fun. Speaking of fun did I mention the cool games that are available? There are 4 game packs you can download from archos' web site and that's not all! Setup an account with CinemaNow and view movies right on your device or PC cheaper than renting at Block Buster. I'm happy with this amazing device, I'm sure you will be too.
