Decent DVD Player March 16, 2010 AndrewM (TX) I bought this as a precursor to buying an HDTV set - so I'm still watching on an Standard Def TV. The DVD player loads acceptably fast, and hasn't skipped a bit since firing it up. My Pioneer receiver (VSX-1014TX) remote control worked perfectly with this DVD player, with no programming required.
The pitfalls of this player: the remote is big and clunky. It's shaped like a thick brick. But I don't use the one that came with it, I use the one from my stereo receiver. Also, when using the composite video output (yellow plug), there is an artifact that scrolls across my screen - a vertical line with a square a few inches to the left of the line. It's always present when the DVD player is turned on, whether or not a DVD is playing... the artifact is always there, always scrolling, always annoying. The artifact is not there when using the S-Video or R/G/B outputs (so I use those instead). Basically, composite video is too annoying to use.
PCM audio works well, sounds great hooked in to the receiver. Even analog outputs hooked directly to the TV sound OK, but the digital audio out is really the way to go.
Overall, I'm happy with the player, but I'm knocking it a star for the artifact in composite.
Couldn't Be Happier March 12, 2010 Sherlock Holmes (Springfield, Missouri) My Toshiba, purchased in 2002, quit working. It wouldn't play any DVD from any region. Although this is not a multi DVD player (I could load 5 DVDs into the Toshiba) I decided to try it based on the reviews I read here. Because some people had had problems, I was somewhat hesitant but finally placed the order. Unit arrived in 3 days. The biggest problem I had with it was getting it out of the box. Inpart because it was so well packed (came via UPS) and in part because I'm so weak from cancer surgery and associated complications.
Got unit out of box, plugged it into AC, connected it to TV via HDMI cable, turned it on, loaded British DVD and DVD started playing. All in less than 10 minutes after getting it out of the shipping box. I can't say anything about reliability because I've only used it for 4 movies, but so far it's working perfectly.
Pioneer DV-420V-K February 25, 2010 Larry G. Haynes 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this player because of very good reviews that I had read, and because it was one of the few that can play Dual-Layer DVD's. I was not dissappointed. The very first dual-layer DVD that I popped in played flawlessly from the beginning. On my Samsung player, it would take a while before it would play it. It also does a good job of upconverting dvd's. So far, I am very happy with this product. I would highly recommend it.
Topnotch Player February 8, 2010 Eric Bennett (Brantford, Ontario) I am totally satisfied with the features and performance of this player. I have been using my 1TB Iomega USB drive to view movies and TV shows that I have stored. The player has also handled a number of foreign format DVDs that until now I found unplayable. The sound quality from my surround sound has never been better. I have even been able to perform a firmware upgrade that has increased the USB filename length viewing size, added a multi-region selection technique and improved the subtitles features. I purchased this in September 2009 so I don't know if other comments about having no multi-region apply to newer manufactured units. The only glitch I have encountered is the player's FAT32 directory reading limitations which "hides" earlier stored files from view after you exceed 300 folders on the USB drive.
No picture adjustments in USB mode February 1, 2010 JoeSchmoe155 (NY USA) My main reason for the purchase was to have 1080p HDMI output and to be able to play region-free PAL DVDs, PAL VCDs and Divx files. This player does that but there are no picture adjustments in USB mode (when you play files from USB stick) which is pretty significant flaw.
