Instable product, worst careless customer service ever ~ March 19, 2008 Butterfly (Great Lakes) Picture and product quality seemed to be okay, not great ~ after a couple of times being used it would read NO DISC w/disc in it. No reply from customer service, no appropriate customer service phone number, after hours of trying I get finally through ~ they seemed to know the problem immediately ( guess I am not the only customer calling reg this defect!) but offered to send replacement pin only against a $80.00 fee ! Absolutely ridiculous considering the fact that the unit had hardly been used (could not find my receipt anymore and had it not registered upon purchase) After having it fixed w/ the help of BEST BUY NERDS it worked again - until I lost the battery pack on the last airplane trip - did I mention that the battery pack seems to come off all the time and does not really stay attached ? MINTEK: NEVER EVER AGAIN _ would not be worth even half of the money I paid for ....
Unreliable December 1, 2006 Mother of Five (Bethesda, Maryland United States) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I actually bought three of these units for 5x per year car trips for my 5 children. Two of the units still work, although the battery life is not long (2 movies tops, if that). The third unit broke -- the little button that shuts off the player if the unit is closed is permanently depressed, so it never plays. I am not having much luck with customer service. The phone number for the portable DVD player support is permanently busy. I've sent an e-mail, but not much luck. I didn't save my receipt, so not sure this thing will be worth fixing. I purchased at Costco, so a return -- even if I had the receipt -- is out the question.
Didn't even make it a year September 16, 2006 Okie in Alaska (Alaska USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Very disappointed in this movie player. It has failed after 9 months of occasional use. It says no disc. I can't find my sales receipt from when I bought it and their website says I need it even if I had registered it orginally. Trying a different brand now, hope it lasts longer.
Unsatisfactory battery life and lousy customer service September 13, 2006 ex-Mintek Purchaser (Atlanta, Georgia) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased a Mintek MDP-1815 portable DVD player on July 10, 2005. It was used somewhat infrequently, primarily on long car trips with my grandchildren. Occasionally, I loaned it to my daughter for her use with the grandchildren during their long car trips. It worked fine until about April 2006, when the battery [properly charged before the trip] "died" shortly after the grandchildren started watching a movie. During the next attempt to use the unit on a road trip [following an overnight charging], the unit played for one movie and then stopped function, even though it was plugged into the vehicle's 12-volt electrical outlet. I subsequently called Mintek on July 25, 2006 and talked to their Customer Service Department, at which time I told them that the unit's battery would not hold a charge and would not function in a vehicle, even when plugged into a 12-volt outlet. The customer service representative told me to send to Mintek the battery and a copy of the sales receipt, and they would send me a new battery. Having just moved from one state to another, I let a month lapse before sending the battery. I have now received a telephone call from Mintek telling me that they would not send a replacement battery, since I let "too much time lapse" before sending the defective battery to them. So their one-year warranty is being "strictly" adherred to, even though I had the problem start before the year had expired and was told by their representative that they would replace the defective battery. I feel like I gave them adequate justification to replace a defective product, but they do not stand behind their warranty. I will be returning the player to the store where it was purchased, and even if I do not get a refund the retailer will be aware that the Mintek product was sorely deficient. I will never buy another Mintek product.
Just Ok Personal DVD Player August 15, 2006 O. Brown (Twopeas, WA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
*** For the money, this DVD player is fine, but it is definitely an entry-level player. I had bought a smaller Mintek (7") before that I was extremely pleased with. This player, although larger, is missing some of my favorite features present in the smaller player. My favorite feature in my old unit (which lasted for two years of extremely heavy use---say two hours daily) was the fast forward and fast backward. These multiply the speed each time you hit the FF or FB (first time is 2X, second time is 4X, etc.---all the way up to 32X). I had liked this because with the subtitles on, I could fast forward through boring parts of DVDs and still quickly read what, if anything, was going on. The fastest speed on this player has increased from 16X to 32X but you can no longer read the subtitles above 2X while the action is FF-ing so you no longer know what if you're missing something. Or you can FF really slowly at 2X. You have to watch the whole DVD. This DVD player is part of a kit, coming with all accessories, cords, batteries, etc. so you only need to spend the purchase price. It comes with only one headset, though (instead of two headsets like the smaller version). The picture quality is great, and I do enjoy the larger size screen. A small increment in screen size makes a HUGE difference! Pretty much all of the functions of the player are on both the player and the remote. This is an improvement over the smaller version. As a side note, I have been using the remote from the old player on the new one, since it hasn't failed yet, with no problems. This player seems as sturdy as the old one. It closes without a latch, just four silicone pads, two on the top and two on the bottom of the screen, but so far it hasn't fallen open. I'm pretty careful with it though, because my old one failed because of the many, many time I dropped it, especially the last time, which torqued the screen and almost separated it from the rest of the player. You can't argue with the price, I just expected more and better, not less with a bigger screen. This wouldn't be a bad purchase, just not a great one. ***
