Philips Antenna, June 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The instructions for assembling the antenna were vague and if I were not mechanically inclined I would have had a difficult time with the assembly. I also purchased a Philips antenna rotator which works very well. The antenna that I replaced was old and falling apart and not nearly as large as this one but it gave better reception than this antenna! It worked well for the analog stations but not so well with the digital stations even with the antenna rotor. The antenna does not come close to its stated range as I am within 50 miles from all stations. The only thing I can think of that could be wrong is that I am too close to the stations to get a good fix on them. I am currently using this antenna for analog stations on my analog sets until I get the digital converter boxes. On my HDTV set I am using an antenna that I made with a 2x4, coat hangers, and a 30"x16" piece of metal screen with 1/2" square holes. The reception I get from this homemade antenna without a signal booster blows away the reception of the Philips antenna. Would I recommend this antenna? NO! There are cheaper antennas out there that will work better. This antenna may be too directional or sensitive and must be pointed precisely at the digital signal but even with my antenna rotator I couldn't find that spot!
total garbage May 29, 2008 Do NOT buy this!! I wasted 2 days getting it in my attic and it is just like the othewrs say useless!
Waste of money and time July 31, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This Godzilla of antennas is so bad that it actually could not outperform a tiny indoor silver sensor antenna both for VHF and UHF. Don't waste your money, time and attic space with it.
A Flimsy Antenna June 27, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought this antenna to replace the one over 20 years old on my roof. My house is about 55 miles from Milwaukee, marked as blue zone on CEA website.
The manual of the antenna is totally useless, The hardware doesn't match the list either. I had to figure out how to assembly it by looking at the picture on the box. Fortunately it is easy enough and took me less than 30 minutes to put things togather. The antenna is flimsy and huge, the parts would break or bend easily, I had to be very careful when moving or turning it.
The reception of VHF is good, better than my old antenna equiped with a 26dB amplifier, channel 10 is almost perfect, while 4, 6 and 12 are good to very good. However, the UHF has not been improved at all.
I also tried Chicago towers about 45 miles away (violet zone according to CEA), got simular results, good to very good VHF and poor UHF.
I returned it to the store because I was worrying the parts could fall down in the wind and UHF was not good enough.
Don't Bother May 26, 2007 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I just dumped $90 on this thing. Took me 2 hours to assemble it as the instruction were rubbish. I then get it up on the roof - a 2 person job in itself - get my old antenna down and hook it up.
The old antenna was 25 years on the house and even then it picked up 8 HD Digital channels. The new antenna gets 4. It doesn't even pick up analogue all that well.
