2 out of 5 stars Worse than its own model   July 10, 2008
AnhMy Tran (Hartford, CT USA)
I purchased RCA ANT301 to replace the old one, also RCA, bought 5 years ago, that has one of the rods broken.
However, the new one is worse than the old one, even with a broken wing.
The screen becomes blurer with many flies flying all over.
I have to replace it with the old and broken one.
I do not know which of RCAs is worth buying, for the old one is now obsolete.

1 out of 5 stars Geez, Why did I buy this junk?   April 16, 2008
J (Washington, DC United States)
Purely, all-around, awful performance. This RCA antenna looks like it is supposed to do something -- metal poles, ring that goes around in circles, wire jack, electric plug & little dial on the back.... But any spare piece of wire stuck into your TV's antenna jack will do a significantly better job than this horrible rip-off. I'm embarrassed to say that I bought it in good faith from a Big Box store. It shouldn't be for sale anywhere. Boo hoo, my poor dollars went pay for this swiveling piece of crapolla. What's the point of plugging it in and turning some little "gain" knob when all it does is makes the picture WORSE than if you had no antenna at all. I can't say enough about how terrible this is, and how ashamed I think RCA should feel for pushing this on distributors. I will not buy anything made by RCA in good faith again because of this stupid product.

3 out of 5 stars Decent antenna   January 23, 2008
J. Rogers (Decatur, GA United States)
For starters, let me inform you that I've had this antenna for over 2 years now. I bought it at Target, and, if memory serves, there were only 2 or 3 antennas to choose from, so my options were limited.

For HDTV viewing on my new Sony Bravia, I wanted a high quality indoor antenna. I first used an RCA ANT301 that picked up decent over the air stations in standard definition. After numerous adjustments, it picked up quite a few HDTV signals. Interestingly, most of those signals could only be detected with the amplifier off, but not with the amplifier on (as I explain below, I do live fairly close to most towers). The antenna did require adjustment from time to time as a few stations were hard to pick up consistently. There were also a handful of other HDTV channels that I could not get at all.

I turned to the Phillips MANT510, the successor to the fabled 'Silver sensor.' I returned it within a few days as I could not pick up as many channels as with the RCA antenna.

I finally broke down and purchased the Terk HDTVa. I can pick up all of the HDTV channels in my area (that I am aware of) except for 3 that are around 50 miles away on the other side of the city. The amplifier doesn't seem to affect whether or not I can pick up any channels, but that may be due to my proximity to the tv towers. To be honest, it doesn't seem to pick up standard channels better than the two other antennas I tried, but that's not what I bought it for. The HDTVa gave me the most HD signals of all three antennas.

The RCA antenna was a fair standard definition antenna and appears to be a fair HDTV antenna. For me, the Terk antenna was better and is definitely worth the extra $20 (based on current Amazon prices). But the only way you're going to know for certain which antenna is best, is to buy one and test it.

As a matter of comparison, I live in the metro Atlanta area, 2.5 to 6 miles from the major towers. The antenna doesn't require adjustment from its current position to pick up all of the HD channels.

5 out of 5 stars Works great in Balt/DC area   January 21, 2008
codyh.vt (Maryland)
This was the third antenna I bought in attempt to get an HD signal in my apartment. I was unable to get a solid HD signal at all with the first two (after almost 30mins playing with each). However, with hardly any fiddiling at all, this one worked great. Picked up all my major stations with maybe 5 mins of moving the antennas around.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely Terrible   December 31, 2007
vthokie (Arlington, VA)
This antenna is a huge waste of money. I live in a strong signal area (<5 miles to the towers). On an analog tv this antenna produced an extremely noisy picture due to the poor amplifier. Without the amplifier, this antenna did not produce a picture. On a digital tv this antenna did ok. However, a cheap pair of rabbit ears with a UHF loop greatly outperformed this antenna both on digital and analog tvs. I would not recommend the RCA ANT301 to anyone, even if were free.
