2 out of 5 stars Great stereo...when it worked   January 16, 2006

I was given this stereo, along with the Sharper Image subwoofer as a gift in July 2005. I loved it from the beginning -- the sleek look, color changing display, and fantastic sound when paired with the subwoofer. Everything was great.

Until this January (2006). A mere 6 months after receiving the gift, I have had problems with the CD player. The problem is that it won't spin properly. At times it won't spin the CD at all and says "No Disc" even though there is a CD in there. Other times it randomly starts skipping while playing music and then the spindle starts slowing down and the music becomes distorted.

The good thing was that I called Sharper Image in the hopes that they would repair it. The customer service rep told me that they no longer sell this model, but will give me a gift certificate (at the Sharper Image) for the amount they were selling it for. I was impressed because he made it sound very easy, a human being picked up the phone -- in other words, NO PHONE TREES!!

I have not yet taken it back to the store, but will do so this week. I am hoping I won't have any problems.

All in all, I loved the product until it developed problems. Since the problems developed, I have become suspicious and wary of Sharper Image products. I grew up in the 80s thinking the Sharper Image had very high quality items. As my first Sharper Image product, I am disappointed and don't know if I trust the Sharper Image anymore for electronics.

Pros:
Great sound (when paired with subwoofer), great look.

Cons:
Unreliable. Stopped working 6 months after it was purchased.

The Bottom Line:
I wouldn't buy this product because of the lack of reliability.

This is an excellent CD Player. The sound is amazing. The lights are cool. The amount of presets available is sweet. I would recommend this to anyone. The user manual is fine for me.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Buy It   June 5, 2005

Ever plan on falling asleep while listening to this stereo? Then don't buy this one! The power LED in standby will illuminate your entire room and if that isn't bad enough, the main LED display cycles through even brighter lights. Sure, you can press and hold a button to keep it at a particular color but when you turn the stereo off it loses the setting and cycles through the colors again the next time you turn it on. Maybe you could deal with the bright lights if the sound was good. Once again, don't but this one! Even if you can get past the very thin, metallic sound the hiss of the CD player at low volumes is unacceptable. Once again, Sharper Image's quality disappoints me.

2 out of 5 stars Great look and sound... but there are problems   January 4, 2005

I purchased this stereo a few days ago from a Sharper Image Store location and as great as it looked and sounded, I took it back today. First off the instruction manual had to be written for an older version of this stereo because there were alot of things that it should have done that it didn't do because it is a "new and improved version". For example when playing a CD the instructions say you have the option of changing the display from how much time has passed on the current track to how much time is remaining on the current track to how much time is left on the CD to the AM/PM Clock. But they must have changed that on this model because it doesn't do that at all. But by far the worst part of this stereo was the remote. The buttons on the remote have to be mashed in to have them work. And with the volume 'button', which is a sort of dial/bubble/push thing, you have to apply a certain amount of pressure to a very specific and hard to find part of the 'button' on the remote.
