Product Description
Once again, Sharp, a leader in LCD technology, establishes a new design standard for LCD TVs. With a screen size class of 42", the AQUOS LC-42D64U raises the bar by fitting large screen sizes into incredibly small footprints. By changing the layout of circuits inside the LCD panel and by reducing the number of parts, Sharp engineers developed the Slim-line design which reduces depth by 25%, allowing placement of the LC-42D64U in virtually any setting. The LC-42D64U utilizes Sharp's proprietary Advanced Super View / Black TFT Panel with multi-pixel technology, providing 10,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio with Enhanced Picture Contrast Technology and 4ms response time. The LC-42D64U features built-in ATSC/QAM/NTSC tuners and includes 3 HDMI (version 1.3) inputs, compatible with 1080p signals, a PC input and 2 HD component video inputs. Side terminals are included for wall-mounting convenience as well as RS-232C input for control.

1 out of 5 stars Don't try firmware update!!   November 3, 2009

I have a Sharp TV(LC-42D64U). I bought it in Sept 2007. I have used the TV for about 2years. I recently downloaded firmware update(d64ua120.uvp) for my TV from sharp website. First, I formatted my thumb drive to FAT. Then I moved the new firmware file to my thumb drive. Finally, I put my thumb drive into my TV and attempted to update new firmware. I also followed all the necessary steps such as selecting update from the main menu, etc. But when around 12% of firmware update was completed, I got a message saying that the updating process has been failed. I tried it again and again but the same message popped up every time. I turned my TV off and then turned it back on. I called Sharp customer service but they couldn't fix the problem. Now my TV won't even turn on. It's just black--just the green power light and green OPC light blink alternatively. Finally, I had to take the TV to a Sharp recommended repair shop only to find out that the main board has been "wiped out" and that I would need to replace the board. It'll be $605.00(included labor charge) + tax to fix it. OMG!! I can't believe it. I just tried to update the new firmware!! I've updated new firmware before without any issues. I did not do anything differently this time. I don't get it!! I don't like Sharp TV!!! Don't try firmware update!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great TV   April 30, 2009

I was a little uneasy buying such an expensive product online, but I love this TV, and with a good calibration setting, it's excellent. I went with the 4ms refresh rate because my husband and I play a lot of video games. If you buy this in stores, you will pay double the price!

5 out of 5 stars Great for all my display needs.   March 20, 2009

I bought this baby after my Samsung broke down after a year, unfortunately out of warranty (Should've got the extended warranty. Oh well, live and learn I suppose.)

First I should say that I don't use this tv for the analog tuner or even watching cable tv, as I do not have a cable box or an antenna hooked up, nor desire to. What I do use this for is displaying all sorts of content from browsing the web, to deathmatch games directly from my pc's video card (via dvi to hdmi cable) and gaming via my xbox.

Let me say that if you're a serious gamer longing for the lag-free response time that you'd get from a crt, only on a large, high def screen, then you need not look any further. This TV has a game mode that's actually useful. My mouse cursor doesn't lag, and timing sensitive games play just like on a crt. All but the most seriously competitive twitch gamer would be quite satisfied with this tv. It has a maximum refresh rate of 60hz so it's not as silky smooth as some of the faster crt's, but it's quite satisfactory for me, especially considering the other lcd offerings out there.

If you're using this as a pc monitor it's also great, just make sure you hook it up through a digital connection, it supports just about any resolution I could throw at it. And just press the "view mode" button on the remote to get the full resolution of your video device without any overscan, it makes for very sharp, readable text (especially at 1920 by 1080).

As for image quality, it's top notch with only very very minor flaws. It should satisfy all but the nuttiest of image quality enthusiasts. Bright sharp screen, great colors, good viewing angle. As for the flaws, you really have to be paying attention to notice them. I suppose the most noticeable one is that on the left and right sides of the panel, the display is a bit darker, it's just on the very edge, so you won't be looking there most of the time, therefore, not that big a deal. As for the banding issue, it's there, but it's a very subtle effect, and it's noticeable on some content more than others and doesn't detract from my enjoyment significantly. There's also a very subtle issue that I suppose is only really noticeable when you're relatively close to the screen, i'm not sure if it's the way the pixels are arranged on the panel, or the way the panel processes images, but it manifests as being perceived as an uneven arrangement of pixels, most noticeable on high contrast areas along straight lines. The viewing angles are great, but not as great as on my samsung, but the vast majority of the time this is not noticeable.

I suppose if whether or not you choose this tv it depends on your priorities, if you're more of an image quality nut, then you might want to see samsung's or sony's offerings. If you're more of a gamer, I'd definately recommend this tv over anything else out there.

So in short, it's great for all my needs. Your mileage may vary.

5 out of 5 stars Great TV   February 14, 2009

Awesome TV for the money at the time I bought it! Had it well over a year now and it's been great! Sound and picture quality are superb. Styling is nice which sets it apart from the other brands. Set-up was a breeze too! I cannot complain about this Aquos in any way! I Look forward to having it for years to come!

5 out of 5 stars Good quality for the Price   January 28, 2009

We purchased this until for our family room. Excellent picture. Sharp provides an extended warranty. An initial problem required an onsite service call which was handled very well at no charge. Turns out that the TV can be set internally for use in a hotel room, store display, or a home. Mine was set on "store." Help agent couldn't figure out the problem. The service person who came got it straightened out.

The delivery was handled very well. The delivery person helped to set it up (really does require two people). Do not try to set this tv up by yourself. The controls are easy enough to use; high def sports programs are unbelievable. Paid just over $1,000 for the unit -- a good buy.
