Product Description
The 1930's were an age of lost innocence with a redefinition of wealth as people struggled to survive the depression and public works projects launched civilization further into the 20th century. The rumbling beginnings that would lead to World War II were beyond the horizon of life in the USA. Music was the thing and swing was king on radio waves and records. Teac GF-290 Nostalgia Stereo System is reminiscent of that period of the 20th century but also adds a CD and Cassette player. Rotary volume control with on/off Function selector Requires 120V AC, 60Hz USA Plug (power cord included) Size WHD - 17.37 x 10.25 x 13.66 Weighs - 18.8 pounds

Amazon.com Product Description
Nostalgic music fans that look back fondly on the radio and TV consoles of the '30s, '40s, and '50s will delight in the Teac GF-290 stereo system, which combines modern components with a retro design. The system is housed in a classic wooden cabinet with a pair of old-fashioned (in appearance, anyway) speakers built into the front housing. Inside the old-school box, however, sit all the modern music complements, along with a couple that hark back a few decades. The device is centered around a front-loading CD player for enjoying modern digital formats (including self-recorded CD-R and CD-RW discs), along with a three-speed, belt-drive turntable that lets you listen to your original Stones recordings on vinyl. Users can also revisit the era when pop singles and R&B cuts ruled the airwaves by speeding the turntable to 45 or 78 rpm.

Of course, any good classic console also needs an AM/FM radio, and the GF-290's analog tuner does the trick. The radio knob and station display are particularly cool, as they pay homage to the classic designs of the Depression era. And should you tire of CDs, LPs, and the radio, you can always pop in your '80s cassettes for a big-hair flashback.

The most significant modern touch comes in the form of the two-way speaker system, which boasts a pair of 2.5-inch drivers that sound nothing like the scratchy speakers of yesteryear. The built-in speakers also turn this console stereo into a relatively portable unit, as all the components are housed in the same cabinet. The console system measures 17.37 by 10.25 by 13.66 inches (W x H x D)--small enough to carry without too much trouble--and weighs 18.8 pounds.

1 out of 5 stars Teac GF-290 CD/audiocassette/LP player with AM-FM tuner   August 31, 2007
John A. Armstrong (Bethesda MD USA)
The sound quality is poor because of cheap, small speakers; radio tuning is
very difficult because of problem turning dial, there also seems to be a hum
during LP playing(it's also too bad phono doesn't include a record changer);
there are no treble/bass adjustments. Probably OK for kids or for people who
don't care much about quality of audio.

1 out of 5 stars FORGET THIS BRAND - GET A GOOD BRAND LIKE SONY   August 25, 2007

WE HAD THE UNFORTUNATE EXPERIENCE OF BUYING A VERY SIMILAR UNIT, THE GF-600. AFTER A COUPLE OF YEARS THE CASSETTE RECORDER AND THE CD PLAYER WENT BAD. HERE LATELY THE POWER SWITCH DIED. CRIMINAL CHARGES OUGHT TO BE LEVELED FOR PEDALLING JUNK LIKE THIS.

BTW, I CHALLENGE TEAC TO CALL ME AND MAKE IT RIGHT - 703-878-8952 - I'LL BET THEY WON'T.

I ALSO INTEND TO DISCOURAGE ALL MY FRIENDS FROM PURCHASING ANYTHING FROM TEAC, AND i WISH TEAC AN EARLY BANKRUPTCY.

LIKE I SAID IN THE TITLE, SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY AND GET A GOOD BRAND LIKE A SONY - THEY LAST AND LAST, AND YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.

2 out of 5 stars Vital Information   March 9, 2007

The item was delivered quickly and in good condition. But in the course of making the purchase, at no point was I warned that because it is US made, it will not work on a British voltage. I had an adaptor - that was not the problem. The problem was that when I switched on, there was a loud and alarming hum, an even more alarming bang and a frightful smell and that was the end of my Nostalgic Console. I have now found and ordered a British product which should arrive shortly.

It is important that purchasers should be aware of full technical details before concluding a purchase - and that the information should also be put in plain English so that buyers without a technical background can make sense of it. Much technical information supplied with electrical products (I am speaking generally now) is incomprehensible to anyone who is not an engineer. Valerie Anand (Disgruntled of Mitcham)

2 out of 5 stars The tape player is below par   February 26, 2006

This unit IS very attractive. The sound IS good. But the "Casette Deck" is a rectangular hole, with one button to fast forward/stop, and no buttons to rewind, or play. It's worse than the tape player in my old Ford.

Then the darned thing stopped working. I was very upset, as this was a gift. Do not buy this product if you have any intention of ever playing casette tapes. Otherwise, it was nice.
