Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
In a live performance, music takes many different paths to reach your ears and touch your emotions, including a blend of direct and reflected sound. Bose 301 speakers feature Direct/Reflecting speaker technology to recreate this combination of direct and reflecting sound, delivering music that sounds spacious and more like a live performance. Conventional speaker design focuses sound directly at the listener, somewhat like a flashlight beam. That means stereo effects are most prominent in one sweet spot, delivering unbalanced sound to the rest of the room. 301 speakers produce Stereo Everywhere speaker performance, so you and your friends and family can sit where you like and enjoy balanced stereo sound from almost anywhere in the room. Our 301 bookshelf speakers provide outstanding sound while fitting beautifully into your living space. Their slender and graceful lines will match your decor and our accessories offer even more placement alternatives. And 301 speakers are a suitable choice when youre ready to experience Bose sound in your movies as well as your music. Connect these versatile speakers to your surround sound receiver and enjoy the benefits of Bose sound in almost everything you watch.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome   September 5, 2008

These are the best speakers I have ever heard and I have tried a lot. You will be blown away. They are much better than Bose 201 so worth spending extra bucks. I have hooked them to an onkyo receiver as the front channel speakers. I also tried Bose center channel VCS10 but it's crappy.

4 out of 5 stars Bose 301 - Great sound if placed right!   September 2, 2008
Rick Devore (Butler, Pa.)
There has always been much controversy over Bose 301 speakers. Some claim they are the best while others decry everything about them. Personally, I'm not a hardcore audiophile but I can't stand $159 all-in-one units that sell in department stores, which it seems is what most people own. I've always owned decent equipment; speakers by EPI, AR, KLH, and now Bose 301s. I've had a lot of exposure to Bose equipment since the mid-70s and I don't buy into the hype that Bose is best. I hate some Bose products - like the Wave radio. No, Bose isn't the best, but Bose is unique.

It is imperative that 301s are placed as Bose recommends. If you can't do that, don't buy them. In my small living room, my huge 3-way KLH speakers were just firing sound into the carpet and furniture, as well as taking up floor space. I bought a pair of 301 Series IV ( virtually the same as Series V ) used from Ebay for $125. When I received them, I placed the 301s on top of the KLH speakers to test them. Switching back and forth between the two sets of speakers, it was obvious that the overall sound of the KLH speakers was superior. After mounting the 301s on the wall, the sonic magic took place. The sound filled the room better than the KLH speakers ever could. I love that "spacial" thing. You can hear both channels wherever you sit in the room. Cymbals and tambourines bounce off the walls and suspend in the air, recreating the ambiance of a live concert. You'll need to crank up the bass some and watch the treble; it can get harsh. I already had a 7 band per channel equalizer ($15 on Ebay)and it really helps to tame some of the odd tonal curves of the 301s. These speakers are sensitive to what is put into them. Bass performance can be a problem. If the bass is recorded just right, it will sound good coming through the 301s. If not, they can sound thin or boomy, depending on the input. I added a cheap Yamaha powered subwoofer to my system to add more deep bass at any volume. You also will need a receiver of at least 80 watts per channel. 301s aren't real efficient. And, they sound best at moderate to moderately loud volume.

Certainly, Bose 301s aren't critical audiophile speakers. In fact, they are "trick" speakers. However, with these speakers placed correctly, and a little help from a subwoofer and an equalizer, I now have the best sound system ever. It's lively and spacious. It rocks the house. You don't have to sit in one place to listen. Despite a few shortcomings, I love the sound of these speakers. And, they sound infinitely better than any department store stereo.

2 out of 5 stars Bose 301 Series V Loudspeakers Sounded Lousy Compared to Older Models   August 23, 2008

Recently my old Series II Bose 301 speakers are suffering from disintegrating foam surrounds, so I wanted to check the new version of this speaker to help decide whether to refoam, or replace the speakers. I went to Best Buy to hear the Series V version, where I could compare them with the 5 or 6 bookshelf speakers they had in the same price range.
I was very disappointed in the sound of the Series V speakers. While they had adequate (but muddy) bass, they had very poor midrange and treble output at any volume. Of the speakers in the 200-300 dollar range per pair, they did not compare well. There was a pair of Klipsch B-3 Synergy speakers, slightly more expensive at retail price, that sounded quite crisp in comparison. In fact, the Bose 201 speakers sounded much better than the 301's; slightly less bass, but much better in the higher frequencies.
Now I've never been particularly enamored of Bose speakers. I worked as a sound man back when, and used to cringe at the harsh output of Bose 901's used in many PA systems. But I have about 20-year-old Bose 201's and 301's at home, in my office, which has stucco inner walls and a wood floor, with 1 glass patio door. In that environment, those old Bose speakers produce a very enjoyable live sound, with lots of midrange and treble, that is spread everywhere by the reflections. Their bass is very clear, with no mud. Voices and cymbals are crisp. They play loudly with no distortion. Much, much better than the new Series V model I tested.
I've read several reviews that claimed that the Bose 301 Series V are the end product of a continual improvement in the design of the 301's. I, frankly, don't believe it. My 301 Series II's are much better in every respect, even with the damaged speakers. Needless to say, I am going for the refoam, instead of replacement. If I wanted to spend the money, of the speakers I sampled at Best Buy, I'd go with the Klipsch speakers cited above.
However, other reviewers had a much better experience, from which I conclude that there was possibly something wrong, either with the ones I sampled in the store, or with their setup. The buyer should beware of a potential for product inconsistency, and sample the actual purchased product before leaving the store, just in case, if possible.

5 out of 5 stars Don't know how they could be any better.   July 25, 2008
T. Young (New York)
I'm not an audiophile by any means. But, I love film. And I know when films sound great and when they sound poor. And these speakers make my Blu-Ray movies sound unbelievable. I only wanted 2 speakers. I'm not into the whole 5 speakers, or more setup like some of the people on these reviews. And for the money these seemed to be the best for me. I went to Best Buy and listened to the Bose 201s, as well as some Polk speakers and Sony's. These were by far the best. The Polk had more bass, but lacked the subtle tones that I love so much. And I can't have a lot of bass anyway do to my neighbors.

If you just need really good speakers, get these! I have them hooked up to a Yamaha receiver (only $200 on Amazon) and my Blu-Ray player via HDMI (for video) and an optical cable (for audio) and the sound is as good as I could ever want. More than I need to be honest. I'm not selling theater tickets for crying out loud! No need to spend a fortune when these will do just fine!

3 out of 5 stars Sounds OK, but not sure I got my moneys worth   July 3, 2008

Not much of a base sound, and there are a lot of other brands out there for a lower price that I believe gives the same quality. Still it is a good loudspeaker.
