What a long, strange wait it's been. Don Felder has left, a generation has grown into adulthood, and at long last, Eagles return with a new studio album, their first since 1979's The Long Run. Given the interim, though, fans couldn't possibly have asked for more. The two-disc, 20-track Long Road Out of Eden not only retains the entire menu of the Eagles' staple sounds--effortless, multi-part harmonies; colorful, if not intricate, guitar embellishment; meticulously crafted songwriting; squeaky-clean, almost geriatric production--but many of these songs also viscerally recall past hits from Eagles' or the extant members' solo records. Like revenant doubles, "Frail Grasp on the Big Picture" echoes "Life in the Fast Lane," "How Long" channels "Take It Easy," the guitar arpeggio threading through "Center of the Universe" hints at the ubiquitous "Hotel California," and "Business As Usual" could have been culled from the cutting room floor from Don Henley's The End of the Innocence. The effect of all this familiarity is one of masterfully crafted self-tribute with one eye riveted on posterity, calculated to please both the deep-pocketed who can still afford the Eagles' concerts and those who'd given up on ever hearing new material again. --Jason Kirk

3 out of 5 stars Don't expect to hear the old Eagles edge   October 12, 2008
Photoguy (United States)
I have been an Eagles fan since they first came out. This is a good album, but it isn't great. Don't expect the same edge and punch as in their '70s work. This is a softer, gentler Eagles, and I was disappointed. It is a keeper, and I will play it, but not as much as their original works.

1 out of 5 stars A Five-Star Turkey   September 24, 2008

This horrible mess is filled with flat-out, bad songs that are rife with trite lyrics ("I heard some wise man say that every dog will have his day" or "I'm savin' all my lovin' just for you 'cause there's nothin' more that I would rather do"); beautifully sung; and meticulously, if somewhat lifelessly, played. Listening to these CD's is like listening to an Eagles tribute band, who sound uncannily like The Eagles, but mulishly insist on playing their own lousy originals. The problem is that the great Eagles songs from the 70's had more hooks than you'd find in a Velcro factory. These songs have nary a one. Remember how you had to skip through the filler on "The Long Run" to get to the good songs? On these CD's the filler has taken over and the good songs never appear. At one point--in order to relieve the monotony--The Eagles start singing in falsetto (I kid you not), Bee Gees-style. Leave this turkey in the bin at Wal Mart, go home, pour yourself a glass of tequila, and reminisce.

5 out of 5 stars Good 'getting over the breakup' music and good Eagles music   September 24, 2008

Perfect songs for getting over the demise of a "broken" long friendship. Lyrics and music are really good. I enjoyed this 2 cd album the most!

5 out of 5 stars Great Eagles CD to add to your collection   September 20, 2008
JonM4 (Michigan)
No, it's not Hotel California...get over it. It is good music by a great band that's been together over 30years.
Something to enjoy and not necessarily "take you back when"

3 out of 5 stars Sad to admit it   September 9, 2008
Julian Salinas Prieto (Guadalupe, Nuevo Leon Mexico)
I've been an Eagles fan since I was a teenager. They still are a great band, but It's sad to admit they have lost their creativity. No song of Long Road gives the "let me hear ths song again" feeling, besides Don Felder shines more being absent! The band lost a great talent when he left. The songwriting lacks innovation and the lyrics are sometimes very stupid. It seems to me they tried to play this one safe, after all, old loyal fans would buy it anyway (as I did... dang!).
