Easy to use and inexpensive May 18, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I got this yesterday on sale for $20. It replaces my RCA Lyra that I bought at least 3 years ago. For me, the functionality is an upgrade - my RCA unit played music in a random-playlist format - songs would not always play in the order you put them in (or even alphabetically).
With this unit, I first copied over 10 mp3 albums (with bitrates ranging from 160 to 320kbps), each in their own folder. No issues with playback. The unit will let you scroll through the folders and play an album without any problem. For me, this is a decent upgrade for $20.
It is not expandable and a durable belt clip would be nice. The headphones that come with it are barely long enough to put on and have the unit in your front pocket. The headphones have a little string loop at the mp3-player end so that you can secure it to the little keychain attachment at the top. That helps keep it from unplugging by accident, but shortens the chord even further making it even harder to hold in your pocket. It also comes with a USB extension chord, which makes plugging it into the computer much easier if you don't have any easily-accessible USB ports. Transfer speed is tolerable - it may take about 8 or 9 minutes to copy over a full GB to this unit. Recording worked pretty well, and you can set it for 32kbps or 64kbps which is fine for recording voice. It saves it as a WAV file in a "\RECORD\VOICE" subfolder. At this moment, I have the device 92% full (971MB) and when I hit record it indicates that it will continue to record for 2 hours and 50 minutes. The "SYS" function will let you play with brightness, contrast, key hold time, and view the usage/space left, firmware version and a function for firmware upgrade.
It's not an Ipod, for sure (nor would I want to spend that kind of money on an mp3 player) but for the price it's pretty decent. I think it would be nice to have this in a 2 or 4GB size, though.
If you can get it in the $20 price range, I think it's a good deal. Any higher and I would probably shop around more, because there's lots of competition.
