Amazon.com Product Description
The beat goes on with Toshiba's Gigabeat U-series portable media player. The silver device--which offers 2 GB of internal flash memory--is built for audio and photo playback, with support for MP3, WMA, and WAV audio formats and JPEG still formats. All told, the Gigabeat stores up to 20 hours of audio, enough for most road trips or gym workouts. As an alternative, you can also store a host of data files in the memory, in effect turning the Gigabeat into a portable flash drive. Need to empty your camera's memory card so you can take more photos? Not a problem.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to the "plus" touch interface. With one or two clicks, you can select a track, adjust the volume, or show off your favorite photos. More significantly, the pictures look crisp and vivid thanks to the 1.1-inch color OLED display, which isn't all that big but provides a nice 96 x 96 pixel resolution. Other details include six equalizer presets, a USB 2.0 interface for high-speed data transfers, an FM tuner with 10 station presets, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

The Gigabeat is outfitted with a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery that provides up to 20 hours of listening per charge. And at 1.4 by 3 by 0.4 inches (W x H x D) and 1.5 ounces, the device fits easily in a pocket or purse. The Gigabeat also carries a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

3 out of 5 stars Decent cheap player   April 5, 2008

I have not used this an awful lot. It has its ups and downs but most of the downs are not related to the core functionality of the player. It seems to play fine with good sound. The screen is nice, it's very compact and the controls are fairly simple and well done.

So what's wrong with it?
- it does not come with a holster thingy so right now I have it jammed into an old one. how much would it cost for them to put a strap and a plastic holster in the package? 10 cents?
- it forces you to "upgrade" to the newest Media Player. I *MUCH* prefer the ability to plug in and have it show up as a removable disk. the MP-based scheme is much more cumbersome (to me) and the stupid thing even snuck a small handful of crap promo songs into my MP3 player without me knowing.
- documentation is crap. what's worse is that the old Media Player (before the DRM stuff started appearing) *seems* to work -- it goes so far as to show a progress bar when downloading -- but does not. There is no sense why it is not working and you will only know the Gigabeat is not broken if you yourself break down and install the latest Media Player.

3 out of 5 stars good for a first mp3   April 4, 2008

I have had this mp3 player for a few weeks and it does it's job...I didn't have any problems getting it started on my computer....I didn't realized the screen would be that small so that was a shocker....the earbuds actually don't fit my ears well, so I'll say if you have small ears you may have problems with the earbuds staying put....I like other Toshiba products so that's why I chose this mp3 player and I didn't want what everyone else had.....this is a good choice for a simple mp3 player that can store a good bit of music.
