Amazon.com Product Description
Small enough to fit in the palm of your hand but loaded with features, the Coby MP-C885 MP3 player lets you listen to your favorite tunes on the bus, at the park, and just about anywhere else. The device measures a mere 3.58 by 1.1 by 0.75 inches (W x H x D), with a removable end cap that reveals a direct USB plug for connecting to a computer (no cable required). More significantly, the MP-C885 offers 1 GB of integrated flash memory, so you can store roughly 16 hours of MP3 music or 32 hours of WMA music--more than enough for a marathon training run or a cross-country flight. And for those occasions when you need to transport data rather than music, the MP- C885 can handle that, too, with the ability to store JPEG photos, text documents, and more. The mobile storage function is ideal for transporting business documents across the country or serving as an overflow backup for your digital camera's memory card.

It's easy to navigate through the audio player's contents thanks to the high-contrast LCD display, which displays the song title and artist information. And as with the best MP3 players, the MP-C885 offers a number of handy extras, such as a built-in digital FM tuner, support for Windows Media DRM-10 online subscription services, ID3 and LRC support for song and synchronized lyric information display, and a high-speed USB 2.0 interface (up to 40x faster than USB 1.0). The MP-C885, which runs on a single AAA battery (included), works with Windows 98 SE, Me, 2000, and XP and Mac OS X operating systems and carries a 90-day warranty.

What's in the Box

2 out of 5 stars Works OK but USB broke   July 4, 2008
I bought this player so I could listen to music while jogging. For that purpose it has worked fine. Unfortunately the USB interface stopped working after about a month. In other words it still plays music but I am no longer able to put any new music on it. Others have mentioned this as well so my advice is to make sure you copy over all the music you want early on.

1 out of 5 stars Liked it, kind of, but died   June 29, 2008
USB interface failed within 30 days. (Tested on two computers.) Technically not dead, but practically so.

Edit: I tried the reset option of removing the battery. I also failed to mention the poor LCD display. Not what you would find on a cell phone, for example.

I don't know if there is an ideal player, all seem to have a fair number of complaints save the iPOD suffle. But no LCD display? Battery needs to be charged via the USB port? A major reason I purchased my MP3 was to avoid running my computer just to hear public radio archives. And it appears you either have to send the iPOD in to replace the battery or buy a $30 kit to do it yourself. You also can buy a dedicated USB charger. Makes this reviewer wonder why the iPOD ranking is so high.

So far, I'm happy with the SanDisk sansa M250. You can forward or reverse within an audio file, which the Coby MP-c885 could not. Perhaps not an issue if you only listen to music versus NPR or audio books. I'm not finding it readily in the manual, but I see an online program to reset the device. Perhaps if the Coby had this, I would still own it.

3 out of 5 stars Coby MP-C885 1 GB Flash mp3   June 28, 2008
The second one worked. Coby help line really wasn't familiar with MAC computers. There only suggestion was send it back. My son has a different Coby model that just like this one doesn't recover space when you remove songs with a MAC - does with a PC. Coby apparently thinks iTunes is a fad. The manual is no help for MAC users.

5 out of 5 stars Alot of features for the money   June 26, 2008
I've had no problems with this little MP3 player. Plenty of room for lots of tunes, and the FM tuner has surprisingly good range. All devices like this use up alot of battery juice. Most batteries recover a bit of power when the unit is shut down and later turned on. But I listened many hours before I had to replace the battery. Rechargables will definately make this work for you. Arranging songs can't really be done on the unit, but must be done on your desktop computer, though I still have trouble getting them where I want. But still, I managed to get this here for $18, so it was well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars comments for coby mp3 player   June 22, 2008
Considering who I had in mind for this mp3 player, it had to be a great one. Good condition, so that a little kid could handle it without any worries about it falling apart when he was rough-housing. And it is just that. It's a great mp3 player. I would definitely buy another one if I needed to.
