2 out of 5 stars Sound is okay; skipping is unacceptable   July 30, 2008

This unit is primarily used at my weekly music lesson to record a 1 to 1 1/2 minute song played by my instructor. He still uses a cassette recorder and I thought having my "homework" recorded on the iPod 30g Video would be much better.

He's normally very meticulous and plays each and every note that's on the sheet music. However, I noticed after the first week that there were notes missing (which really confuses things when you're trying to play along). I thought, at first, that maybe he had mixed things up a bit just to keep me on my toes. However, it's done this every time he records a song; always happening at different places with a recording.

Since this is the only reason I bought this, I was sorry that I kept it almost two months before reading the less than stellar reviews (thought it was just this particular unit or something); otherwise I would have returned it immediately for a refund. Next time I make this type of purchase I'll read ALL the reviews ... not just the good ones.

5 out of 5 stars Does the job!   July 25, 2008
This product does what it says it can do. My girlfriend has been using it for two weeks+ for a summer class. It has certainly worked well and has definitely aided her studying.

The only drawback, if any, you need to ensure it has a full charge before each use and charge it after. She takes a 1 hour and 20 minute class 4x a week and it will get her a full lecture each time.

Highly recommend!

1 out of 5 stars Sounded great for 3 recordings, then died.   July 25, 2008

When I got this unit, I took it out of the box and tried to plug it into my Ipod. And tried. And tried. The plug wouldn't go in. I had to move the plug around a bit and apply more pressure than any other ipod docking plug I have ever used. Finally, it plugged in. Unlike what it says in the manual, the record function did not automatically start. What did happen was a "voice memo" line appeared under extras, I believe it was. When I selected that, it had an option to set the record quality to high or low, and a start recording option. I started the record, let it run for 20 seconds, and stopped it. The recording I had just made appeared right under the quality setting option and the start record option. I highlighted it, pushed the center button, and play and delete options appeared. Playing it, I was pleased with the quality.

After coming back to the device later, I tried plugging it back in, had the same problem with the stubborn plug. It recorded fine again. I made another recording with the auto gain on to see the difference. It definitely amplifies nicely, but adds hiss.

The next recording I tried came out as a hash of hissing, static and crackling. If you are old enough, you have heard an old AM radio in a thunderstorm. That crackling and popping was very close to what I got out of this microphone after that.

The plug obviously has something wrong with it judging from the way it didn't want to work smoothly. Whether or not that was the cause of the hideous noise on all subsequent recordings I can't say. I unplugged and replugged it numerous times, and always got that hash of static and crackling.

To say I'm disappointed in this device is an uderstatement. I hate shoddily constructed defective equipment. The "stand" that it comes with is simply a folded piece of plastic. The "quick memo" button on the side of the microphone doesn't work with the ipod classic. I could have overlooked either of these things if it has survived more than three recordings and the plug had worked even decently.

Buyer beware.

4 out of 5 stars Color me Impressed!   July 17, 2008
I didn't really expect much from this tiny little mic, but I was underestimating the sound quality. I used it to record lectures @ school and found it to be quite helpful and it even picked up background music pretty well...so I say go for it. A bit pricey but worth having it available.

5 out of 5 stars No complaints   July 5, 2008
It delivered exactly what I was looking for. High quality recording while charging the iPod.
