Amazon.com Product Description A road warrior's dream, a home theater's able centerpiece: Toshiba's SD-P2700 DVD-Video/DVD-Audio portable DVD player gives you the best of both worlds. The compact unit is distinguished by its sleek appearance, its 8.9-inch polysilicon widescreen display, and its high-resolution 1,024 x 600-pixel screen. The TFT (thin-film-transistor) active-matrix display delivers film-like images rich in detail, color resolution, and contrast. Besides media playback versatility--it handles everything from DVD-Video to DVD-R, VCD, MP3/WMA CD, and a host of image formats--the SD-P2700 offers Toshiba's Super ColorStream Pro progressive-scan component-video outputs (for use with high-definition and HD-ready TVs) and employs an 10-bit, 54 MHz video digital-to-analog converter to cement its guarantee of stellar image quality. A sleek, credit-card-sized remote control simplifies operation. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Further, the SD-P2700 incorporates the Toshiba exclusive Digital Direct LCD Drive, which minimizes conversion artifacts by streaming the video signal directly from the MPEG decoder to the LCD screen driver in the digital domain, bypassing D/A-A/D conversions that would otherwise degrade image quality. Toshiba's digital photo viewer displays images right on your television in a variety of popular formats, including Konica, Fuji Photo, Kodak Photo CD, as well as standard JPEG files--there's even a Secure Digital/MultiMedia Card slot to further simplify viewing. An onscreen display walks you through the process of making your own slideshows, in which you can preset the viewing time of each slide as well as zoom, rotate, and pan each photo. Leading-edge 24-bit/192 kHz digital-analog converters from Analog Devices delivers exceptional 2-channel DVD-Audio frequency response and dynamic range. DVD-Audio discs deliver high-resolution audio, capturing and reproducing all of the nuances of the original performance and offering high-resolution surround sound as well as stereo. (DVD-Audio resolution is available through the analog audio outputs only.) A pair of built-in headphone jacks let you watch or listen with a partner, while Spatializer N-2-2 ULTRA and Natural Headphone virtual surround sound algorithms simulate surround through 2 speakers or 1 set of headphones. The built-in stereo speakers (1.5 watts x 2) grant headphone-free listening through high-efficiency titanium drivers in bass-reflex enclosures for more full-bodied sound than typical portables produce. The SD-P2700 passes both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals through its coaxial-type digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. The supplied lithium-ion battery blends seamlessly with the player's cosmetic profile and offers around 3.5 hours of uninterrupted movie or music entertainment. The battery also charges quickly, in just 3 hours. What's in the Box DVD player, remote control, remote battery, car cord, a component-video interconnect, a stereo audio/composite-video interconnect, an AC power adapter, a user's manual, and warranty information.

Plays MPG files nicely January 22, 2006 R. Leaton 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The main reason I purchased this player was to have a portable dvd player that has the "divx" playback feature (not mentioned in the US literature), but you can read about it at DIVX.com. It won't play .avi files, you have to rename them to .mpg to play them. So far I've been able to play mpeg1, mpeg2, mpeg4, xivd, divx encoded files. The player features are better than average. The remote is nice. The whole unit feels a little on the cheap side. I've had no real issues yet. I like this one better than my go-video player (it has a smaller lcd, at a lower resolution)
Beware August 29, 2005 L. Roberts (Oxford, MI) 30 out of 30 found this review helpful
I received a new Toshiba SD-P2600 for Fathers Day Last year from my kids. After fourteen months of ownership and less than twenty five hours of use, the player would not turn on. This unit was manufactured in March, 2004. Since this unit is factory service only I mailed it to Toshiba. Several weeks later I was informed that the main board was burned out and the cost or repair was $466.00. That is in addition to the $70.00 to look for the problem. If I had it repaired the total cost invested in the unit would be $1,135.00. This total, of course, does not include the $49.00 I had to pay in shipping and handling to return it to me. Run, do not walk, away from this product. Just because the retail price may indicate that it is comparable to high end lines like Sony and Panasonic, the quality is more like the cheap lines sold at drug stores.
NICE LITTLE MACHINE, 2 PROBLEMS June 4, 2005 Raymond L. Duncan (australia) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
Nice little player, carries well, battery charges OK, but pity locked into region 1, no hacking codes yet, but plays region free discs OK. Speakers very ordinary, headphones are essential for listening. Never freezes, picture great provided you sit square on to the screen, peripheral image not good.
Freezes often-do not buy March 27, 2005 Damian (Vancouver, BC, Canada) 25 out of 29 found this review helpful
My wife and I bought this player for our kids (for long car trips) for Christmas 2004. We are both working professionals (teacher and policeman). This player started to freeze during playback from the very first dvd played. It got progressively worse over a period of 3 months. We only played excellent quality and brand new dvds in this player. It now freezes during almost every playback. A complete reboot (turning it off and then on) is required to get it going again. This "freezing" occurs when using the battery, the electrical cord or the car adapter...it makes absolutely no difference. We thoroughly read and followed the instructions before using the player for the first time. We also referred to the manual when we ran into this freezing problem, but no mention of a fix there. We contacted Toshiba USA and Toshiba Canada with negative results even though the player is in mint condition, under warranty and with all the accessories. Our advice to you...don't buy this model or any others from Toshiba.
Nice player BUT January 17, 2005 J. Boyd 22 out of 25 found this review helpful
This is an excellent player, with many nice features. The screen is sharp but, and this is a very big but, the viewing angles are so narrow as to render this almost unusable and is really unacceptable in today's world of LCD screens. It's a shame because the unit is well-designed and well-made. The inclusion of Component and S-Video outputs allows you to use it as player with larger screens which is a major plus but not enough to negate the narrow viewing angles. If the only way you plan on using it is sitting still on an airplane for several hours, you'll be happy. If you move around, or want to put it in the back seat of your minivan for 2 kids to watch, this is not the one for you-or them.
