5 out of 5 stars Blu-ray   March 13, 2010

Great value for a Blu-ray DVD player. In particular we were interested in the streaming feature - great value to have that as well. Great service and super fast shipping.

2 out of 5 stars I will avoid Samsung products after this lousy player   March 13, 2010

I purchased my BD-P1600 about 6 months ago.

The things I like:

1) It still works
2) Netflix downloads come out great...usually (sometimes have to power cycle to get them to play all the way through)
3) Youtube is ok but some videos are blocked due to content(?)

Here is what I *hate* about it:

1) Remote control responsiveness is terrible. I'm not a remote control elitist here but I expect to be able to pause and back up reasonably quickly. The remote control is extremely directional, if I don't carefully point it exactly at the unit the signal won't get through. Even when I do point it correctly I find that I have to make extra effort to hold the buttons down befor the player responds to the command.

2) Noisy drive motors. I'm an engineer, I expect my motors and drive system to be quiet. Noisy mechanical things tell me that something is going to fail sooner rather than later.

3) I just rented the DVD version of Ong Bak 2 from Netflix. This DVD will not play at all in my Samsung...really! A DVD? Won't play?! At all!?!?! This is completely unacceptable. Samsung hasn't released a firmware update in months so no help there. I dragged out my trusty old Pioneer 5-disc dvd player and guess what? The movie played fine so I know it's not the disc itself.

If I pay about $200 for anything I expect it to just work and keep working. I have heard that some Blu-Ray discs are twitchy so I'll allow a small amount of latitude but DVD?! It's not like this is new never-before-seen technology here, I expect the player to load it and get on with playing it!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for people with a brain   March 7, 2010

This is a great blu-ray player. The one I got came with the latest firmware so no need to worry about updating it and the bugs associated with firmware updates. This system is a slight bit high tech and you need to know how to navigate the system settings to use it properly. If you plan on connecting this to a network you need to know what you are doing or your going to have issues. It comes set to display at 1080i so make sure to change it to 1080p. It upconverts standard DVD's very well and plays them almost to the quality of a blu-ray. Load times are faster then most units. Great player for techies and tweakers who are good at troubleshooting any possible issues(I haven't had any problems but apparently others have).

5 out of 5 stars Great Netflix viewer, Easy to use   March 6, 2010

I read the reviews on Amazon after I bought this player and saw all the issues people were having with the firmware upgrade. I was debating whether I should return it or give it a try. I tried it out and it works perfectly. The AnyNet feature works with the Samsung TV and automatically switches the TV over to the Blu-ray player when you power on or perform a function on the player.

It is extremely easy to use. If there is no disc inside, it automatically brings up a menu of online services (Netflix, Blockbuster, Pandora, YouTube). Press a button and you're automatically connected to the online service. If there is a disc inside, the disc will automatically play.

One of the reviews had a complaint abt the noise. It is a little loud when initially loading the disc, but is quiet when playing the disc.
